Del.icio.us Facebook Digg Reddit Newsvine Buzz up! MTSU football head coach Rick Stockstill said he has ended his preliminary search to hire an offensive coordinator.

The job posting closed last week, and Stockstill said he has identified principle candidates to fill the position left vacant by former offensive coordinator G.A. Mangus, who was hired as South Carolina quarterback coach on Jan. 9.

Stockstill would not specify the exact number of finalists for the job, but he said each candidate has acknowledged serious interest in the position. Stockstill, who is on the road recruiting this week, has not formally interviewed all the finalists.

But Stockstill said each finalist is from either the Division I-A college ranks or NFL, and all have previous offensive coordinator experience.

“There are no I-AA guys; I can tell you that,” Stockstill said. “And they will be coming here with coordinator experience. There are no first-time coordinators, and it will be a guy who we can have and stick to what we’ve done before in running the spread (offense).”

Stockstill plans to hire the offensive coordinator just before or after National Signing Day on Feb. 4, and he hopes to have the new coach on the job and on campus by Monday, Feb. 9.

MTSU’s job posting for a cornerbacks coach will be closed Friday, and Stockstill hopes to hire the new defensive assistant shortly after the offensive coordinator hiring.

Former cornerbacks coach/special teams coordinator Antonio Goss was hired as Louisville’s safeties coach on Jan. 16.

“We are having incredible interest in our offensive coordinator position, and I could not be more pleased with the quality of candidates,” Stockstill said. “I am also excited about the calls and interest I am getting for our open cornerbacks job. ... We should have a person in place for that position shortly after signing day.”
Rhea's McLeroy says he's headed to MTSU
Wednesday, December 05, 2007

By Ward Gossett
Assistant Sports Editor

Rhea County offensive lineman Brandon McLeroy has committed to continue his football career at Middle Tennessee State University.

McLeroy stopped by MTSU on his return from the TSSAA's Mr. Football awards luncheon in Nashville and visited with Blue Raiders coach Rick Stockstill. With a chance to do some thinking on the ride home, McLeroy made up his mind and called Stockstill upon his return to Evensville.

"We talked football and we talked about life," McLeroy said. "They're building a solid program."

The 6-foot-4, 300-pound McLeroy played some defense at tackle and at noseguard, but his primary duty at Rhea was on the offensive line, where he recorded 58 pancake blocks and graded out at 92 percent this season. A Mr. Football finalist this year, he is a two-time Region 4-4A offensive lineman of the year.

He decided against waiting to see if an offer might come from Tennessee or Kentucky and chose MTSU over Jacksonville State, Tennessee Tech and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, which was first to offer a scholarship.

"MTSU is a good program. It's Division I and that's what he was looking for," Rhea County coach Jason Fitzgerald said. "They have upgraded their schedule, including home-and-home series with Memphis and Mississippi State. Some upper-tier schools in the SEC are still looking at Brandon, but he and I feel comfortable with his decision."

McLeroy could get on the field with the varsity quickly in Murfreesboro.

"There are several starters returning, but one of their offensive guards graduated and they also have a starter in the offensive line that they want to move to defense," Fitzgerald said. "That played a part in Brandon's decision."

Blue Raiders to hit the field Monday
105 veterans and newcomers report on Sunday
MT Media Relations

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Head Coach Rick Stockstill will welcome 105 veterans and newcomers Sunday as the team reports for the start of fall drills. The first official practice is set for Monday at 5:25 PM.

"We are very excited as a staff and team to get practice started," said Stockstill. "The players had a tremendous summer in the weight room and in conditioning and Russell Patterson and Jason Spray deserve a lot of credit in that department.

"These guys had a taste of success last year and they are anxious to get out there and try to improve on what was accomplished a year ago. I am really anxious to see how some of the young guys, like redshirts from last season, respond because we will be counting on a number of them to play big roles in the fall."

On Sunday, the transfers and freshmen will spend most of the day in academic orientation meetings before taking physicals later in the afternoon. Following dinner, Stockstill will hold a senior meeting, followed by a team meeting, before calling it a day.

The NCAA's mandatory acclimatization period will begin with Monday's practice and will conclude with Friday's drills.

"The first week of practice is always tough because you still have to juggle summer classes with workouts," added Stockstill. "Our plan is to install as much as we can in the first week and then start focusing on what we can and can't do. I hope to scrimmage on Saturday to see exactly where we stand.

"We have to be smart on how we practice because we have so many games early in the season. Most of our hitting will come early in camp so we will be a fresh team when the season starts."

A total of 34 lettermen and 13 starters will highlight the list of players reporting to camp, while 24 newcomers and 30 invited walk-ons will be a part of the group as well.

Offensively, six starters are back including tackles Franklin Dunbar and Mark Thompson, guard Brandon nix, wide receivers Taron Henry and Bobby Williams, and tight end Clinton Corder. Dunbar is a preseason all-conference pick and has started in 18 straight games.

Offensive lineman David Price, fullback Hunter Birtsch, wide receivers Desmond Gee and Jonathan Grigsby, and tight end Stephen Chicola all started at least three games a year ago and return to the fold as well. Gee enjoyed an eye-opening freshman campaign by earning first team all-conference honors as an all-purpose player.

On the defensive side of the ball, starters Wes Hofacker, Trevor Jenkins, Tavares Jones, and Sean Mosley all return up front, while Bradley Robinson, Damon Nickson, and Roy Polite are back in the secondary. Jones and Nickson were also on the preseason all-conference team, along with all-time sack leader Erik Walden.

Walden, a candidate for preseason SBC Defensive Player of the Year, set a school and conference record in 2006 by recording 11.5 quarterback sacks. The senior is also the school's all-time leader in sacks and is easily within reach of setting the SBC career record.

Jake Padrick, Joe Craddock, Ivon Hickmon, Mark Thompson, Chance Dunleavy, Wes Hofacker, D.D. Kyles, and SaCoby Carter are all coming off surgeries and will be limited in practice. Kyles and Carter will be out about three weeks.

"We just have to watch how many reps they get early in camp because they are coming off surgeries," added Stockstill. "We just don't want to rush them back too soon."

The Blue Raiders will open the 2007 season on the road against conference foe Florida Atlantic on September 1. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 PM CST.

Kickoff is slated for 3:00 PM CST.

in a radio interview yesterday afternoon Terry Holland, ECU AD proposed a c-usa expansion to 16 with conf. play within division only (with MT & wku in an eastern div.) according to some ecu fans. Some excerpted comments from fans who heard it...

...Asked about conference affiliation etc. Said he would like to see C-USA go to 16 teams with an East/West Division. Teams would only play teams within their respective division during the regular season. He also said in the current C-USA makeup he would like to see us drop back to 5 conference games with 7 OOC. Hard sell.

No mention of BE membership.

He spent a good 10 minutes addressing this issue...

...As I listen to more of this interview, it is clear that Terry Holland is not satisfied with our current conference situation...and he makes very valid points. No, he didn't mention the Big East, but he also said that it is 'easily possible' that there will be a day when we are not part of CUSA...

...A very informative interview. TH said he would like to see Middle Tenn. and Western Kentucky added to the East division of CUSA. Said Pirate fans could visit Nashville every year for a game with these two. This would mean we wouldn't have to make the trips to Texas as we do now....

... Can you imagine the board meltdown if Stockstill beat us as a head coach?....
Radio Interview archived and linked - see link below. AD Holland not on until 3:50 mark, at 12:50 mark starts comments on future of c-usa, mention of adding MT and wku at 18:50 mark...

summary - Holland wants to schedule more games of regional interest, would like really a five conf./seven out-of-confernce schedule where he could play more NC ACC teams and va tech. Says people complain about media coverage in Charlotte - well ecu has to play games that are of interest to Charlotte media first.

ECU fans are never going to relate to c-usa west division schools that rotate on and off schedule. There's no ability to create rivalries with west div. teams. He wants focus to be on divisional play. He would have c-usa to go to 16 teams with 8 team divisons playing more like two separate conferences. He proposes MT and wku as teams that could be added as east dvision teams in an expansion to 16 teams. Said yearly trips to NAshville with MT one year, wku the next would be great for fans. Holland says that would be more valuable to ECU than playing Rice or Houston.

Quote:excerpt from the DNJ:

MTSU's season ticket sales will mold the team's future football schedule.

MTSU is currently nine percent ahead of last year's pace of football season tickets sold at the same date. Athletic director Chris Massaro said the final season ticket tally and sales in upcoming seasons will determine the Blue Raiders' future opponents and number of home games.

"It's critical that we get into a situation where we can develop our own revenue by playing games at home rather than selling ourselves," Massaro said. "To get there, we have to generate revenue from season ticket sales."

MTSU generated about $110,000 in ticket revenue per game last season, according to Massaro. His goal is to eventually increase that revenue to $200,000 per game.

"I like to deal in easy numbers," Massaro said. "To start to get where we need to be, I figure $200,000 per game times five (home) games and you get $1,000,000 in revenue.

"So first, we need to get our season ticket sales up to do that."

Beginning with Western Kentucky's complete inclusion in the Sun Belt Conference in 2009, MTSU will play eight conference games and four non-conference games per season.

If MTSU's season ticket revenue can increase, Massaro's hope is to play no more than two guaranteed road games per year against major conference opponents.

In addition, the Blue Raiders would play one non-conference game against a mid-major opponent and a final game against either another mid-major opponent or a Division I-AA school.

"The ideal schedule would be to have a couple of guaranteed games, one home-and-home series with somebody like a Memphis and then either add one more home-and-home with a Memphis-like (mid-major) school or buy a I-AA home game," Massaro said. "That way, we could have a chance to test ourselves against an SEC, a Big 12 opponent or whomever. And then with the other two non-conference games and eight conference games, we can have a chance to win seven, eight, nine or even 10 games every year.

"Like I said, it's not going to happen tomorrow, but that's where you'd like to get. A lot of it depends on season ticket sales, so you don't have to sell yourself."

MTSU football season ticket prices range from $55 to $80, and group season tickets are from $40 to $65 (minimum 20 tickets) for five home games. Single-game tickets cost between $15 and $24 each, depending on the game.

The Blue Raiders averaged a school record 22,037 in home attendance last season, but only about one-third of patrons purchased season tickets.

"The bulk of our sales have been walk-ups. About two-thirds are students or single-game ticket (buyers)," Massaro said. "Fans are responding to our success, athletically and academically, but we need to keep increasing our season ticket sales. ... And we need to tie our boosters to tickets. Only about half of our (Blue Raider Athletic Association) members are season-ticket holders."

MTSU won the Sun Belt co-championship and earned its first I-A bowl bid (Motor City) last season under first-year coach Rick Stockstill.

Returning for his second season, Stockstill said ticket sales continue to influence the program's progress.

"I knew that we had to increase the fan base, and so helping ticket sales was part of the deal for me," Stockstill said. "We have to continue to build this program, and we saw the start of that last year. ... People like the improvement they saw in academics, on the field and just in all facets."

Predictably, most of MTSU's season ticket holders live in the shadow of Floyd Stadium. Massaro said that pocket of support must spread.

"The people we're reaching are close by," Massaro said. "We've been fairly solid in establishing ourselves in Murfreesboro. That's our season ticket holder right now, but beyond that we're weak in sales.

"We're working hard to get into the surrounding communities to let people know that this is all of Middle Tennessee's university.".....

The way I read this article, MT season ticket sales are around the 7K mark.

goblueraiders.com article, excerpt:

..."We are coming off one of our best years athletically and academically, and our fans and supporters are responding to this success," said Middle Tennessee Director of Athletics Chris Massaro. "We are building the foundation for future success and we plan to exceed last year's results in 2007-08."

One of the biggest areas of success last year was in the area of fundraising, where the BRAA raised $2.54 million compared to $1.59 million in 2005-06 and set a record in 2006-07 with $835,383 raised in unrestricted monies compared to $658,281 the previous year. Also during the year, a total of 500 new donors joined the BRAA. This is critical because the BRAA is the primary provider of scholarship funding for our student-athletes.

"It was a great year for us in terms of raising additional money and bringing in several new members," said Assistant Athletic Director Alan Farley. "I commend the efforts of our staff and committees for their hard work in helping make all of this possible. Our fans realize this is an important time in the growth of our program and their giving helps fund scholarships, as well as enable us to improve our facilities."

Success on the field is also carrying over into season ticket sales for the upcoming 2007 football campaign. Middle Tennessee is feeling the effects of a conference championship and bowl appearance as football season ticket sales are at a nine percent increase over this time a year ago.

That's a good sign, too, because based on previous selling trends Middle Tennessee's new season ticket drive generally gains momentum in early August.

"If your retirement portfolio gains nine percent annually you would probably be pleased, or if a business turns a nine percent increase that would probably be considered a successful year," added Massaro. "We are encouraged by this current increase because trends would indicate the number should pick up as we get into early August and closer to football season."

Success within various programs has driven record numbers at the ticket office. For instance, the Blue Raider football team drew a school-record 22,037 fans for home games in 2006 and set a single-game home attendance mark when 32,797 watched the Blue Raiders face nationally-ranked Louisville in Nashville. The average attendance in 2006 was up almost 7,000 from 2005. In 2006, 110,185 fans went through the turnstiles for the Blue Raiders' five home contests.

"We were pleased and impressed with the support of Middle Tennessee fans last season," said Head Football Coach Rick Stockstill. "Fan support is so crucial when you are trying to build a program and our fans were a big reason for the team's success in 2006."

A similar correlation can be found in women's basketball where the best season in program history translated into the nation's sixth-best attendance increase in that sport. The Blue Raiders averaged 4,157 fans per game and set a single-game mark when 10,010 saw Middle Tennessee take on top ranked Maryland.

Attendance also has been on the rise in men's basketball and baseball. The Blue Raider men's basketball team has averaged more than 4,000 in consecutive seasons for the first time in 15 years, while the baseball program realized the third highest single-season attendance average in school history during 2007......
