Quote:The Associated Press

This time there was plenty of celebration for Eric Neihouse.

The Arkansas State kicker nailed a 35-yard field goal as time expired to give the Indians (3-3, 2-1) a 39-36 Sun Belt Conference victory Thursday night over Louisiana-Lafayette (1-5, 0-2).

In ASU's previous game, a 50-yard field goal by Neihouse with 1:22 left gave the Indians a 27-24 lead that disappeared less than a minute later when Lousiana-Monroe scored with 36 seconds left for a 31-27 victory.

"It is just an amazing feeling," said Neihouse, who had a field goal blocked in the first quarter. "I thought it was going to happen last week. I was ready to kick (Thursday)."

Neihouse's kick capped a fourth-quarter comeback by ASU. The Indians (3-3, 2-1) trailed 29-14 going into the final period after the Ragin' Cajuns' Josh Harrison scored on a 3-yard run with 3 seconds left in the period.

The Indian comeback began when Bracey, who rushed for 167 yards and caught three passes for 34 yards, scored on a 3-yard run with 13:31 left. Nick Noce then hit Levi Dejohnette with a 55-yard scoring pass with 10:08 left and then passed to Manuel Burton for the 2-point conversion to tie the score at 29 with 10:08 to play. The Indians took the lead 36-29 on Noce's 15-yard run with 7:01 left.

ULL followed with an 80-yard drive to tie the score on a 3-yard run by Harrison, who rushed for 87 yards.

"I am proud of our team for just staying in there," said ASU coach Steve Roberts. "We did not play well in the first half but it is a lot easier to stomach with the way we finished."

Roberts said Cajun quarterback Michael Desormeaux made things difficult for ASU.

"That quarterback is a heck of a competitor," Roberts said.

For three quarters, ASU had no answer for Desormeaux, who finished with 174 yards rushing and 97 yards passing. ULL finished with 554 yards offense while ASU had 458.

The Cajuns took the lead on a 17-yard run by Corey Fredrick on their first possession. A 2-yard run by Abdule Levier in the second quarter made it 13-0. Sean Comiskey kicked a 29-yard field goal to make it 16-0 with 32 seconds left in the half.

ASU got on the board in the first half when a desperation pass was deflected off two players and into the arms of Joe Smith in the end zone two seconds before halftime to make it 16-7 at intermission.

In the third quarter, ULL made it 22-7 on a 14-yard run by Desormeaux.

Bracey then scored on a 25-yard pass from Noce with 4:35 left in the third quarter to trim the margin to 22-14, but Harrison's touchdown right before the end of the quarter made it 29-14.

Noce finished 10 of 20 for 194 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 75 yards, also including a touchdown.

Retro was in Saturday night at Indian Stadium.

Arkansas State and Troy waged an old-school slugfest for the Homecoming crowd, playing the type of game that the old warriors would have no problem recognizing. It was obvious from the outset that this wasn’t going to be a 4-hour offensive display like the Indians’ home opener against Memphis.

If points are your thing, this wasn’t your game.
But for those who can appreciate hard hits and big defensive plays, plus hard-pounding running backs, the Indians’ 13-9 victory over the Trojans wasn’t at all lacking. Perhaps it wasn’t perfect, but nobody was thinking about that in the home locker room when the fight song was belted out around 9:15 p.m.
Yeah, I am a stAte alum living in Madison, WI. The Badgers are now 7-0 for the first time since 1912 and talk of the Rose Bowl and playing for the NC are beginning to surface. The only undefeated teams left in the Big 10 are Wisconsin and Michigan.
However, the Badgers always take a back seat to ASU -- that is my #1 school, always has been, and always will be.
Ole Miss capitalized on Arkansas State’s own misfortunes and turned two second-half turnovers into touchdowns for a 28-21 Homecoming victory Saturday afternoon at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
Bloodlines strong for ASU's Johnson
If family bloodlines mean anything, Arkansas State’s Tyrell Johnson has a promising future in college and quite possibly beyond.
Johnson, Arkansas State’s starting free safety, is the son of two athletes who were among the nation’s finest at the peak of their college careers. MONROE, La. — As happy as he was to escape Malone Stadium with Arkansas State’s first victory of the season, head coach Steve Roberts wasn’t about to say the Indians played especially well in beating Louisiana-Monroe 28-21 Saturday night.
Arkansas State isn’t sitting around feeling sorry for itself.

The Indians continued preparation for their Sun Belt Conference opener, making final installments for Louisiana-Monroe Wednesday afternoon with a practice session that showed no signs of ill effects from last weekend’s disheartening defeat to Memphis.
Arkansas State (0-3) led the Tigers 35-26 with just over four minutes to play only to lose 47-35. Memphis drove 70 yards for a touchdown, returned a fumble 10 yards for another TD and added another touchdown inside the final minute for a mind-boggling finish that left the Indians in disbelief.

Following the loss, ASU coach Steve Roberts said he was concerned with how the Indians would respond to the defeat but was confident they would put it behind them.
So far, they are living up to his expectations.
