The FCS years

(This assumes USA starts out playing scholarship Division I FCS football, and is not transitioning to Division I FBS)

1. A home game against Divsion II school (North Alabama or West Alabama would should be at the top of the list)
2. A road game against a Division I FBS school (go for the largest net payout possible)
3. An out-of-conference game against Samford (home-and-home)
4-11. Seven to eight games as a temporary football-only member of the Big South conference
11B. If you only play seven conference games, go for another regional FCS school home-and-home - the SWAC or Southern Conference would be the best bets (use Alabama State or Alabama A&M if you can't schedule Samford).

FCS to FBS Transition Years 1-2

(USA counts as an FCS opponent)

1. Southern Miss - would probably be willing to play USA in Mobile even if USA still counts as an FCS opponent
2. UAB - another in-state rival and former member of the Sun Belt Conference, who probably would also love the short road trip
3. Troy - it's time to begin the in-state, in-conference rivalry
4-6. Three other Sun Belt teams (two of 3-6 should be at home)
7. A home game against any regional/in-state FCS opponent
8. An away game at BCS school (payout game)
9. A game in the state of Texas (recruiting)
10. A game in the state of Florida (recruiting)
11. Home game against a MAC school
12. Home game against to offset #9 or #10

FBS Years
1-8. Sun Belt (4 home, 4 away)
9. Southern Miss
10. UAB
11. BCS
12. Non-BCS

Non-BCS Possibilities include Navy (nearby Naval bases in Florida and Mississippi); Central Florida (former Sun Belt member); Louisiana Tech (former Sun Belt member); Tulane (regional rival); TCU (if you aren't already playing in Texas); Miami-OH (played in 2003 GMAC Bowl); East Carolina (played two bowl games in Mobile); Memphis (regional rival).

JAGUARS OPEN THE SEASON WITH THREE STRAIGHT TOURNAMENTS

MOBILE, Ala.- Three consecutive tournaments to open the season highlights the 2004 South Alabama volleyball schedule, announced Thursday by second-year Jag coach Nicole Keshock. The Jaguars will play their first nine matches in tournament play including their own tournament the Asbury Suites Classic on Sept. 10-11.

USA returns all eight letterwinners from last year's team, but Keshock hopes that by spending the first three weeks of the season in tournaments, the Jags will gain the experience necessary to prepare for the always difficult Sun Belt schedule.

"This season is going to be very interesting," said Keshock. "We have eight players returning, including five seniors, so we do have more experience on the court. We ended the spring season on a good note and hopefully that will carry over into the fall."

The Jags begin the season at the Florida State University Tournament on Sept. 3-4 in Tallahassee, Fla., where they will meet Stetson, Sam Houston State and Florida State. Then, the Jaguars return home to host their first tournament since 1989. USA will face McNeese State twice and Southern Mississippi. The final regular season tournament hosted by the University of Central Florida will pit South Alabama against Western Carolina, Central Florida and Georgia on Sept. 17-18 in Orlando, Fla. USA opens the conference schedule at home with a pair of matches against New Mexico State (Sept. 24) and Denver (Sept.25) followed by five matches on the road against New Orleans, Florida International, North Texas, Louisiana-Lafayette and Southern Mississippi.

"Hopefully, we will see a consistent team throughout the season. We have some very talented freshmen coming in who are eager to play college ball. I think they will bring a good dynamic to the team."

The Jags welcome back all six starters, led by senior outside hitter Kim Courchesne (2.63 kills per game, 2.71 digs per game), senior outside hitter Morgan Flarity (3.43 kills per game, 2.32 digs per game) and senior setter Michelle Landa (9 assists per game).

2004 South Alabama Women's Volleyball Schedule

September - 3 Stetson (at Florida State); 3 Sam Houston State (at Florida State); 4 at Florida State; 10 McNeese State; 11 McNeese State; 11 Southern Miss.; 17 Western Carolina (at Central Florida); 18 at Central Florida; 18 Georgia (at Central Florida); 24 New Mexico State*; 25 Denver*.

RAYBORN EYEING POSSIBLE BIG LEAGUE APPEARANCE

MOBILE, Ala.- Former University of South Alabama baseball player Kenny Rayborn is closing in on becoming the 20th Jaguar to reach the playing ranks of Major League Baseball. He is among 21 Jaguars now playing professional baseball.

Rayborn, a member of the Cleveland Indians organization, began the year in Double A but moved to Triple A Buffalo soon after. A regular in the starting rotation for the Bison, Rayborn is 6-2 with a 3.05 ERA in 14 appearances. The right-hander from Purvis, Miss., who played at USA from 1994-97, has pitched 76.2 innings with 13 starts.

Last season, right-handed pitcher Michael Nakamura (USA, 1995-97) became the 19th Jag to reach the big leagues when he pitched 12 games with the Minnesota Twins. The Australian native is now a member of the Toronto Blue Jays organization. After seeing action in 17 games in two different spans with Toronto earlier this season, Nakamura is currently a reliever in AAA Syracuse where he sports a 1-1 record and a 4.00 earned run average.

Ten former Jags occupy the Single A ranks. Mobilian Clark Girardeau has moved to high A Lake Elsinore, the California League affiliate of the San Diego Padres. The right-hander is
2-1 with a 1.32 ERA in four starts. He began the season in Fort Wayne, Ind. Girardeau played at USA from 2001-03. Former Jag right-handed pitcher Sam Smith has returned to Single A after a brief stint in Class AA El Paso. Smith, a Jag from 2001-02, is 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA in three starts with the Lancaster JetHawks, affiliates of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Another former Jag pitching standout is Tony Neal, a native of Mobile who played at USA from 2001-03. Neal, a reliever with the Frederick Keys of the Carolina League, is 2-4 with a 3.49 ERA. In 26 appearances, he has four saves and just last month, he was selected to play in an all-star game held in California. Outfielder Cameron Likely, who played for USA from 2000-01, is a member of the Salem (Va.) Avalanche, class A affiliate of the Houston Astros. Likely is hitting .204 in 36 games. USA's all-time home run hitter Ryan Mulhern (2001-03) is playing with the Lake County Captains, high A affiliates of the Cleveland Indians. Mulhern is batting .256 with four home runs and 27 RBI. He has appeared in 66 games, 60 at first base. Another single A Cleveland Indian is Brett Parker. The all-time leader in games played at USA (2000-03), Parker has split time at shortstop and third base with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, members of the New York Penn League. In 18 games, the Mobile native is hitting .234.

Four members from the 2004 class are getting acclimated to pro ball. Outfielder Adam Lind, a third round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays, is hitting .305 in 21 games with the Auburn Doubledays, members of the NY-Penn League. Lind has 18 starts in the outfield. Kevin Williams, a 30th round pick by Arizona, is batting just .154 in 11 games for the Missoula Osprey, affiliates of the Pioneer League. Josh Touchstone, who signed a pre-draft free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, is now with Princeton, rookie affiliate in the Appalachian League. Touchstone started the season with a brief four-game stint for the high A Charleston (S.C.) Riverdogs replacing a suspended player, but is now with Princeton, a rookie team located in West Virginia. Touchstone is one of the top players in the Appalachian League, sporting a .349 batting average with seven steals in 21 games. MOBILE, Ala.- The annual Port City Classic and a visit by NCAA Tournament participant Denver headline the 2004 University of South Alabama soccer schedule.

This year's slate includes 10 home games and eight road contests.

"I think we have a more manageable schedule this year, but it's still very competitive," said sixth-year head coach Mike Varga, whose team played three Southeastern Conference road games last year among the first 10 games. "We have a few more home games than last season. It's always good for a young team to play at home."

Following a pair of exhibition games against an alumni team (Aug. 14) and a home contest versus Auburn-Montgomery (Aug. 21), the Jags open the season on the road for the third consecutive year Aug. 27 against in-state foe Birmingham Southern, marking just the second meeting in school history. USA returns to The Cage Sept. 3-5 for the annual Port City Classic, sponsored by KELME. The Jags will battle Stetson on Sept. 3 and Tennessee-Martin on Sept. 5. Southern Mississippi will also compete in the tourney. The Jags play the first of two games against first-year programs Sept. 10 when they travel to Cleveland State. USA wraps up the Ohio swing against Toledo (Sept. 12). Eight current players, including Varga, are natives of Ohio.

"The team is really looking forward to the Ohio trip," Varga said. "Some of our players will get a chance to play close to home."

Six of the next seven games will be played at The Cage, starting on Sept. 18 against McNeese State. Southern Miss is back in Mobile (Sept. 21) to play the Jags. After a road game at Jacksonville State (Sept. 26), the Jags will close out the homestand with four consecutive matches, including the Oct. 1 Sun Belt opener against Louisiana-Lafayette. Mississippi Valley State (Oct. 3), Florida International (Oct. 8) and first-year program Louisiana Tech (Oct. 10) are the others. USA will play four of its final six games on the road, all conference matches. The Jags make an Arkansas swing Oct. 15-17 to play Arkansas-Little Rock and Arkansas State before coming back to Mobile to play two-time defending SBC champ Denver (Oct. 22) and league-power North Texas (Oct. 24). The Jags finish the regular season at Middle Tennessee (Oct. 29) and Western Kentucky (Oct. 31). The eight-team Sun Belt Tournament will be held Nov. 3-6 in Miami.

The Jags return nine starters and 13 letterwinners from last season's 6-12-3 team, including all-conference performers Amber Angermeier (goalkeeper) and Rebecca Kahn (midfielder).

DAPHNE INFIELDER TO PLAY FOR JAGS NEXT SEASON

MOBILE, Ala.- Former Daphne High infielder Chris Davis has signed to play baseball at the University of South Alabama next season, Jag head coach Steve Kittrell has announced.

"Chris is an outstanding student-athlete and has a chance to be a very good college hitter," Kittrell said. "If he swings the bat, we feel like he will have a chance to play as a freshman. He has a pretty swing. He's the type of player who's about to blossom into his potential."

Davis, at 6-foot-1, 175-pounds, played the last three seasons for former Jag Joe Hutchins at Daphne. Davis competed in just 14 games as a senior before sustaining a season-ending broken finger that required surgery.

"I'm looking forward to playing at South Alabama," Davis said. "I really like the program and the coaching staff."

Davis was hitting .380 before his injury. He was a starter during his junior year and saw action as a pinch-hitter in 2002 as the Trojans claimed a 6A state championship.

"Chris has a tremendous work ethic and a great desire for the game," Hutchins said. "Chris has great arm strength and is a left-handed hitter with gap power."
