Interesting poll question on utrockets.com
Today's poll question is "who is the highest profile team ever to visit the Glass Bowl?"

I voted for Pittsburgh b/c of their ranking at the time.

Kansas. Mangino's profile blocked the sun.

If you go by attendance, it was the Naval Academy.

RE: Interesting poll question on utrockets.com
By far it was Navy. Just the situation prior to the game made it all that more important. Now if Pitt would have went 11-1 the season we beat them then it would have been more important.

I would have to agree with Potts, Pitt fell apart that season. Which makes Navy the winner.

Read the first post, Tom. The options would be the group of all teams to ever visit the Glass Bowl. If Liberty visited the Glass Bowl, then they would be included in that group and hence would be an option for consideration. Hope this post is helpful.

Liberty nearly won the last time it played a MAC school, taking a 12-point lead into the fourth quarter in 2007 at Toledo before losing by a point.

The Parachute Landing Fall (PLF) 5 points of contact:

1. Balls of the feet
2. Calf
3. Thigh
4. Buttocks (hence "4th point of contact)
5. Push-up muscles

#6 would be your head if you f**k up and don't land properly, skipping over 2, 3, 4, 5 and going directly from the balls of your feet to your brain housing group. You always want to land going into the wind (as opposed to running with the wind) on your "side" (left or right), and never forwards, or backwards. A T-10 parachute (around since WWII) is not very manuverable... I truly do miss putting my "knees in the breeze", jumping out of perfectly good aircraft. I am a Master Parachutist, Jumpmaster with 150 or so jumps, all static line (no free fall).

RE: Interesting poll question on utrockets.com
I still see Tony Romo in my nightmares from 2000, when he and his I-AA Eastern Illinois team nearly beat one of the best Toledo Rocket football teams ever. We tackled their receiver at like the UT 5 yard line on the final play, to prevail by less than a TD.

Best to come to UT? If Navy gets props for it's stature/profile.......don't forget they went winless or only won one game in 2001.............then you have to consider Syracuse in 1999. They were coming off of Donovan McNabb's senior year in 1998, when they finished the season #5 in the country. Obviously they weren't the same team in 1999, and they haven't been ever since McNabb left, but when they came in to open the 1999 season there was a lot of buzz. That also was the debut game for the video scoreboard in the north end zone by the way.

Going back further, Navy also came to the Glass Bowl in 1990........we should've won that game too! Way, way back, Marshall was ranked 13th in the country when they visited the Glass Bowl (believe this was in the late 30's or 40's). A then Glass Bowl attendance record was set as the Rockets defeated Marshall 13-10 (or at least I believe that was the final score).

Other thoughts:

Kansas actually first came to the Glass Bowl in the late 80's, and again in 2006.

Looking at a season approach........2003 has to be the best season with two ranked teams in Pittsburgh and Northern Illinois.....winning both games as well.

Oh. OK. Just so long as you guys weren't just touching yourselves in various places. It all makes sense now. 03-wink

Navy in 90- Arnold Smiley heaving the ball into the stands after a TD, as I recall, and picking up an incredibly foolish penalty. That's mostly what I remember.

RE: Interesting poll question on utrockets.com
From a preseason poll perspective you would have to pick Pitt. But, as was commented above, Pitts season did not live up to the hype, so I guess that says something about preseason polls.

Oh by the way, the Rockets are picked to finish 4th in the MAC-West.

To me, Pitt was always a team that was competitive, but I never thought of them as one of the great teams historically.

Miami is already being called the highest profile team to ever come into the Glass Bowl and the game is still like 5 years out.

Navy, to me, is kind of an enigma. Sometimes they're good. Sometimes they suck. But, they're not in a conference. So, in the end, other than the Midshipmen, no one really cares.

Call me crazy, but I'm goin' with Minnesota. In my recollection, the Golden Gophers have always been known as a big, tough Big Ten team that plays smash-mouth football. I don't care what kind of a season they went on to have, or who their coach was; having the Gophers come into the Glass Bowl a year after we knocked off PSU was huge. No one knew whether we would compete or whether we would be steam rolled.

So, as far as home games, I say Minnesota. Road opponents, probably Michigan or OSU in more recent years. That Washington team we played back in '91 wasn't too shabby, either.

The difference between 4th and 2nd in the MAC West Media poll was 6 points, not much. Even with bad teams sometimes the Rockets have won 14 of the last 16 games against NIU. Not impressed by CMU or NIU this year. The 2010 MAC West is up for grabs.
