Track & Field Friday & Saturday (LIVE on internet)
This weekend, the so-called “last chance” meets will take place, as athletes try to reach standards that would qualify them for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The NCAA meet will take place next weekend in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

No Rice men will compete this weekend, as the sole Rice qualifier, Jason Colwick, rests and practices. Colwick currently is ranked # 2 in the NCAA, with a best pole vault of 5.67 meters (18' 7¼”).

As a general rule, somewhere around 15-17 individuals per event, and slightly fewer relay teams, should make the NCAA field for the championshps.

WOMEN

Only Shakera Reece will compete at Arkansas this weekend. The remainder of the team will participate in the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame.

Reminder: WATCH THE ALEX WILSON MEET LIVE HERE

Arkansas Final Qualifier

Friday, March 5

7:00 p.m. CST (60 METERS)

Shakera Reece is #28 in the NCAA with 7.39 seconds for the 60 meter dash. I would think 7.33 would make it.

7:35 p.m. CST (200 METERS)

Shakera Reece is #54 in the NCAA in the 200 meters with 24.03 seconds. It would probably take sub 23.50 to qualify.

Alex Wilson Invitational

Friday, March 5

6:45 p.m. CST (DMR)

Distance Medley Relay – for those of you only casually familiar with track & field, this is an indoor-only championship event, with four runners per team. The leadoff leg runs 1200 meters, followed in succession by a 400 meter leg, 800 meters, and finally 1600 meters.

The Rice “A” team has not raced this year, and will improve their #52 mark of 11:38.22. This team consists of, in order, Nicole Mericle, Brittany Washington, Keltie John, and Becky Wade. Our women would need a perfect race, as it might take 11:10 to make it.

Saturday, March 6

10:20 a.m. CST (3,000 METERS)

Nicole Mericle and Becky Wade will be in the one-section final of the 3,000 meters. Nicole is #82 (9:33.79) and is coming off a great 3,000 (3rd place) at C-USA; Becky is #67, having run 9:31.87. It is going to take somewhere around 9:20 to make the NCAA field.

11:45 a.m. CST (800 METERS)

Keltie John – the sophomore C-USA champion from Canada will race in the 2nd fastest heat in the 800 meters. She currently is #64 in the NCAA with her 2:09.65. I would guess that it will take 2:06 to make it. She may not qualify for the NCAA meet, but I would suspect that she will move up 30+ places on the list after this weekend.

12:15 p.m. CST (MILE RUN)

Britany Williams – she currently is #61 in the NCAA with a 4:47.91, and will race in the 2nd fastest section; Becky Wade – the C-USA champion in this event will be in the fast section, and is ranked #45 (4:46.00). I think she is capable of going 4:43, with the right kind of race. Each will have to ramp it up, because I think 4:41.50 would be the target time.

HEAT SHEETS and SCHEDULE.

RE: Track & Field Friday & Saturday (LIVE on internet)
The pace on the DMR was too slow through 3 legs, so Coach pulled them off the track. On the good side, Brittany Washington had a monster 53.7 leg for 400 meters.

An improvement for Keltie, but not as much as I had thought. I believe that she is fit enough to go 2:08, but she will have a nice outdoor season.
