Stanford series
As I write this the countdown at riceowls.com is 11 days, 3 hours...

I'm sure Walt will prepare a pre-game summary, but I was wondering:

With the wet and cold weather we've had in Houston this winter has the team been able to get enough practice?

And how about the weather in Palo Alto? Same question about the Trees.

Any long range forecast for the weekend of the 19th?

RE: Stanford series
I will do a preview-- probably prepare over next weekend, but as it's the first series of the year, with no 2010 stats yet or set lineup established, the preview will be a collection of links to articles on Stanford by Rivals, PG Crosschecker, Eric Sorenson, the local Stanford paper and the Stanford website/message board.

As for the weather, as bad as it has apparently been in Houston, keep in mind that much of the southeast, southwest and northeast corridor have been snowed out since intrasquads were allowed to start January 29th, and teams in both southern and northern California have been inundated with non-stop rain...until this past weekend. As cold and nasty as it's been, we've only had to cancel one practice so far, and shorten another.

In Orange County we've had roughly 8-9 inches of rain in the last three weeks - which is pretty bizarre when you consider that we had about 5" in ALL in 2009. And - this past weekend was actually pretty nasty through late Saturday.

That being said - the rain has not been non-stop. There have multi-day breaks of sun in between - so my guess is that practice time out here has had a lot to do with field/drainage quality.

I'm pretty sure that Northern California patterns have been somewhat similar.

I'm in Houston. 03-cloud9

We've got nasty, cold, rainy weather too 04-jawdrop. Fortunately The Reck drains really well and the young guys who play baseball for Rice run around in shorts and shirtsleeves while I bundle up in multilayers of insulative materials. ( It's heck to get old 03-banghead )

I think the Rice Guys will play well in Cali if the field is drained. 04-rock

The rain in the Bay Area has been pretty non-stop for weeks now. Maybe 6 weeks? (It's definitely interfered with the completion of my home remodel, but that's another dreary story.) There have been a few days, including one this weekend, where there was not a LOT of rain or it was at least non-constant. I'll have to go back and look at the official stats, but I'm sure we haven't experienced any Southern-Cal-esque multi-day breaks in the wet stuff.

Despite my drenched outings the past two years @ Long Beach and @ San Luis Obispo, however, I'm optimistic about the weather for our games this year @ Stanford. It just cannot continue to rain like this! Even in the wettest of our winter rainy seasons, there are usually 3-4-week periods that alternate with rain and relatively sunny/dry weather. We're VERY overdue for a whole bunch of the latter. Let's have it start at least by about Feb 17th or so!!

Looking forward to seeing many of y'all in less than two weeks.

Go Owls!!!

RE: Stanford series
Maybe all the rain is how the Sunken Diamond got its name?

Blame El Nino but I don't understand how it is always El Nino or La Nina. Isn't it possible from a meteorological standpoint to have a year without either one present? And since they're dominating the weather pattern every year, maybe they shouldn't be referred to as phenomenons anymore?

I can tell you about 60 pct of the basketball games I've gone to this winter have featured some rain falling down on the Rice campus either before, during or after the game. Last night was a downpour going from the car to Tudor.

A much better forecast coming out of The Weather Channel at weather.com, predicting high temps 61-62 with only a 10-20-20% chance of rain over the 3 days.

Supposed to dry out over the whole state (CA) over the next week - so field conditions should improve considerably.

Highs of 75-80 in the OC by Sunday. 03-cloud9

Yes!! The weather is improving. Today is gray and dreary with a trace of rain ... but the two days before were nice ... and good weather is predicted for the coming week, as noted above. Even if the daytime highs are balmy, visitors should be prepared for chilly evening temps, however. "Wear layers" is the Bay Area fashion mantra.

See y'all soon!!

Weather.com is now showing the chance of rain as 60%/40%/40% for Friday/Saturday/Sunday.

I hope it's wrong/wrong/wrong -- at least for our game times.

Things are looking up. The up-to-the-minute Accuweather Forecast has a rainy day tomorrow, highs mid-50's (down to the low 40s at night), but perhaps clearing around game time, with a small chance Saturday and a partly cloudy day Sunday...

http://www.accuweather.com/us/ca/palo%20...1&metric=0

...sounds like a repeat of last year's San Diego series at The Reck. Bbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I suggest bringing gloves, in addition to the layers of clothing and rain gear.

It's foggy/dense low overcast and has been drizzling in San Jose now for at least the last two hours ... and both weather.com and Accuweather say it's partly cloudy with a 10% and 0% chance of precipitation, respectively.

Yeah, Mike-- I just arrived in the Redwood City area. Current forecast for tomorrow is decent, but getting cooler with rain possible late...with Saturday projected to be the best day of the weekend. Their currently calling for rain throughout Sunday.

Current Accuweather forecast (as of this morning) calls for a mostly cloudy day today, with "a little rain" this afternoon, but "periods of rain" this evening. Tomorrow (Saturday) is shaping up as the best day of the weekend-- mostly cloudy, but with some sun (and no mention of rain)...but Sunday they're calling for rain all day, not tapering off until the evening...

http://www.accuweather.com/us/ca/palo%20...1&metric=0

...I wonder if we can get the game in today, they schedule a doubleheader for tomorrow (given the ominous Sunday forecast)?
