Right now I am sitting in a hospital in Birmingham. Today started out normally, I got to eat lunch with and meet Tiger B'Ham, I performed chapel for the kids at Jefferson Christian Academy Elementary. I then went to a coffee shop with my fiancee in order to study (I have a pretty major paper due this Wednesday). Anyways, while studying my fiancee had to call a nurse that she had talked with earlier this week for some vertigo like symptoms she has been having. Today it got so bad that she threw up...4 times. She can't stand up and her headaches have been increasing.

They told her to go to the emergency room.

So rather than going to Atlanta tonight and celebrating my upcoming birthday with my cousin at the Hawks game tomorrow night, I am sitting in my fiancees hospital room. They wanted to do a ct scan just to make sure everything was fine. The doctor figured that it would be normal and everything would come back negative.

But it didn't

There is too much fluid in her brain. So they did an mri....turns out there is "something" at the base of her spine where it meets her brain, and that they will have to put a shunt in order to get rid of it. The doctor doesn't think it is a tumor, but then again, "doesn't think" doesn't sound like 100%. The neurologist thinks that it is a "bizarre cyst". Regardless she goes into surgery tomorrow morning at 6:30.

So here I sit, not able to sleep and not able to write my paper. The nurses are attending to her now, so that gives me enough time to type this. I can't keep my eyes off her. I keep telling her (and myself) that the neurologist does this everyday, just like he has done for 20 years. More people have had more serious surgeries and they have walked out. Regardless I am starting to get worried sick. Here we are a few months before we "start the rest of our lives together" and I can't shake the feeling that she is slipping away from me, even though I am holding her in my arms. It's a terrible feeling and I don't know whether to throw up or break down. I can't break down, because she needs me to be strong. So I sit here nauseated and worrisome, asking for prayers.

I cannot tell you how much I am praying for you. Indeed it is...

I never really knew what the purpose of life was until I studied for a debate on the problem of evil (and pain) my senior year of college. I always thought it was something generic like, "to make God happy" or "to show people Jesus" but I had an epiphany, one that God wants us to realize. Through many toils and many times when we get kicked in the mouth we forget that there is one reason why we exist:

To prepare ourselves for eternity.

We have been created with the end in mind. We should live to that extent. I am going to tell you this and you might think this a bit weird but I mean it when I say it.

I love you.

So many times we forget what true compassion is, but that's something that we return to when we feel this deep loneliness that cripples us in our beds and we lie awake crying all night. I am going to take this experience and never ever take for granted what God gives me, and I will work to prepare for eternity. If I wake up in a few days and I don't have a fiancee anymore I will still say the same thing as if she is still here.

I have not said this yet, but I am praying for you and your entire family, and those prayers will put me to sleep tonight.

I don't that's weird one bit, and thanks for giving me something to sleep on. I took my sister to the the hospital not long after arriving. The doctors told me that if I hadn't been here, she would have likely slipped into a coma. I brought her home yesterday, and took my father today. God has me here for a reason. God hooked you up with your wife for a reason. I've never been very religious until the past five years. I'm ashamed of that, but I think He has been listening to me lately. You just got my third prayer.

I just wanted to say that ya'll have no idea how much help ya'll have been. I have been reading the messages that you all have written on this thread and the other one to help her realize just how many people care for her well being. Her entire demeanor has changed and she wanted me to write a public letter of thanks to everyone. She is now crying tears of happiness rather than worry (or so she says).

Footprints

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand. One belonging to him and the other to the LORD.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times of his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it. LORD you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me.

The LORD replied, my precious child, I Love you and I would never leave you! During your times of trial and suffering when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.
