RE: ARMON BASSETT leaves UAB
I think it means that Bassett came here to play for Davis and he realizes that Davis is not going to be here next year, leaving on his own with Cousins in pocket, or being forced out for failing to make his players go to class.

If everything falls like it is looking too, the Mike Davis hire will be the darkest and stupidest moment in UAB history, even worse than the Murry days.

Could it be that the Indiana folk were right about Davis?

Can someone shed some light on the truth and not just speculation or "educated" guesses?

I never thought I'd say this, but at this point I'm more optimistic about the future of UAB's football program than the basketball program.

Do you think if we finish the year with barely enough players to field a team, that an $EC school would want him, even for 1 year?

Maybe his drug problems resurfaced and Davis cut him loose.

Hmm, it could be that Davis is not the problem here at all.

But speculating and going nuclear is so much more fun.

RE: ARMON BASSETT leaves UAB
If Bassett is the one that was hinted at in the other thread as someone ineligible in addition to Mayfield and Jr, then it is not too bad. I don't count them until they actually suit up. If Bassett flunked out, we have enough time to recover from for that next year. Just one more scholarship.

However, if it is Bassett and another current player on this year's team in addition to Mayfield and Junior, then it's time for some housecleaning.

How the f are they not making grades? As much as I love UAB and the quality of education I received, it is not MIT and there are some really easy majors out there for them to choose if all they care about is basketball.

If I remember correctly from last night's coaching show CMD said we had 5 or 6 scholarships left. So...
1. AJ
2. TRod
3. Crawford
4. Cameron
5. Milsap
6. Fields
7. Coleman

leaves 6 not counting Bassett or Mayfield...

I'm trying to be optomistic. If he leaves, could this sway a couple of other big time prospects to us? They might figure they'll get more playing time, more headlines, more touches and more points.

It looks like 5 out of our 7 for next year either plays the sg or sf position. CMD had better get his arse out and get commitments from some pw and c NOW!

Losing Bassett for whatever reason is a huge loss. If you've seen him in practice, you know just how good he is.

So does Jr, Mayfield, Trod, Basset, Sharpe, etc. Your point?

Lets get Bledsoe in here and enjoy him while we can.

Honest opinion (and opinion only)?

Traditional and deep-seated reluctance to spend for a front-line academic advisor instead of the radio announcer's son, or a former player in need of a job, or some prof who did favors for the dept. then bonked his tenure review or ... you get the picture.

And you're right, it's not that hard. Anyone who can understand and remember the complexities of Davis' offense and Marsh's defense should be able to keep a 2.0 with adequate, professional oversight.

Not to mention his failed drug tests while at Indiana. I wish he could have changed his stripes while at UAB. It really is unfortunate that he had these problems. I wish him the best.

I never had a problem keeping about a 3.0, much less a 2.0. I'd rather CMD recruit guys who can both read and play basketball. If Duke can be as competative with their much higher academic standards, then why can't we?

It's time for Garrison to step in. Clean house in the entire athletic department. Wipe the slate blank from the AD Down. This is very embarrassing that we have only six players eligible because of grades. I am not overreacting. When we had academic problems last year, it proved that the basketball program needed oversight and the fact that we have again - means that Maclin hasn't done his job either. I have not been impressed at all with his job as AD.

I guess they can sell the fancy bus for road trips now and buy an SUV or mini van or even a full size sedan at this point.
