RE: 1994 Rice/UT on ESPN Classic
Is it just me, or did we look significantly bigger as a squad back then? Maybe the pads were biggger, I don't know. But everyone from the QB to the CBs looked big and pretty fast. Maybe it was the wet field that slowed down Texas, or maybe Texas just got a lot better and faster with Mack, but I thought that Rice team looked full of BCS-type athletes (of course we were in the SWC then and had several NFL or pro players - Kalu, Izzo, George, LaRocca, etc). The announcers mentioned how fast the Rice D was that night, althought they thought our FS Stanley was small, but he was over 6'0 and weighed almost 200lbs! You have to think the talent gap between Texas and Rice has widened since 94, for many reasons, including conference alignments, coaching staffs, and money (BCS), but it appears to be closing again.

I don't know if we were bigger back then. I think the difference might be that they (the Texas, ESU-type BCS schools) are so much bigger now. Its my impression that the average size of a lineman and most of the "skill" positions have increased somewhat in the last fifteen years. Given that and our fall from the SWC to a lower-tier conference, amongst other things, I would think that we would field a relatively smaller looking team now vs. then.
Of course, that Texas team was coached by John Mackovic, so that could've had something to do with it as well.

On defense, I thought we looked bigger in the secondary, and smaller in the front 7. Kalu didn't have much weight to him at all; Joe Davis, as great as he was, was only 210 lbs at LB.
That 1994 team had a lot of talent. Makes you wonder how things might have turned out if Goldsmith had stayed another year.

It was played during a torrential rainstorm that lasted pretty much the entire game. However, I do not recall if there was a tropical storm around at the time. The next day, it rained practically the entire day and flooded most of the streets around the university.
Tropical Storm. North Harris County and Montgomery County had severe flooding.
Just finished watching the game. Love the final score 19-17.
ESPN classic cut the entire third quarter. Most of the rain bursts are not shown.
No one beats Rice 29 years in a row!

I think we were bigger then, and UT has gotten much bigger, while we got smaller. Coach Hatfield tended to go for shortish players. I think some of that was his philosophy. You don't really need much height to play the Wishbone. It especially helps the linemen to stay underneath their opponents' shoulder pads and drive them down field if they are shorter than their opponents. I say that because it really helped me when I played (...in junior high anyway.) I recall one of my high school classmates' older brother, who played offensive line for Darrell Royal at UT. The guy was only about 5' 11'' tall, but he was also that wide. He had to walk through residential doors sideways to get through without damaging the trim.

I remember it sprinkling on and off the game but don't remember it being a downpour. Maybe I was focusing on the game and could care less.
I remember being just a few feet away from the first UT touchdown. Our DB was all aligned to intercept the ball and he was clearly pushed away by the UT receiver who then tip toed into the end zone. Even his body language indicated that he was expecting to be flagged for Offensive Pass Interference (I don't blame him for what he did). In any case the refs gave him the TD!! This proved to me what I always knew and that is that you have to beat UT by at least 10 points because that is what the refs give them.

I found the October 1994 storm here, which dumped over 2 feet of rain in some areas near Houston. Money quote (about halfway down the page): "Perhaps the most widespread event occurred in October 1994. With this event... abundant tropical moisture was present without the aid of a tropical cyclone." The key rains lasted for about 3 days.
This was also from the Chronicle blogs earlier this year. It's storm #5.
If you watch the 2-hour condensed replay from ESPN Classic, the first half was played on a relatively dry field. However, I think halftime and the third quarter resulted in some pretty stiff winds and rain. The areas close to the sidelines were noticeably wet in the 4th quarter of the game. You also notice that the coaching staffs on both sidelines weren't wearing raingear in the first half, but by the 4th quarter, there were many in stronger gear, though it didn't appear to be actively raining then.

The Chronicle blog comments reference remnants of a Pacific storm, which must have been Hurricane Rosa

MJY Wrote:There were severe rains for much of the week preceding the game. I think the storm pushed out in the Gulf, then came back (although I might be confusing it with Allison). I drove through the hardest rain I've ever driven through (around the Harris-Montgomery County border) on the way to the game -- had to pull off the road twice, and missed Rice's long opening drive. IIRC, the bad rain and wind held off most of the first half, but really blew in Texas' face as they were heading toward the South endzone for a go-ahead score in the third quarter, especially on the drive that ND snuffed out with back-to-back sacks.
Rain and flooding continued the day after the game, which shut much of the city down and caused severe pipeline ruptures/fires in E. Harris County on Tuesday. I moved to The Woodlands in May 1994, and at least up here, the October 1994 flooding was worse than any that has followed, including Allison and Ike.
Of course he played better when the storm was its worst--in the Ibo language, "Kalu" means "God of Thunder". So, he was the first Thor!

We WERE bigger. We got smaller after we got kicked out of the SWC.
