USS Toledo
Got bored so I looked up ships named after the city of Toledo. There have been 3 so far:

First was a WW2 patrol frigate that was renamed the Dearborn of all things.

Second was a heavy cruiser that served during the Korean War.

The most current one is a Los Angeles class sub that is currently in service. Actually played a part in the Kursk contraversy.

Sadly, there was at least one, a Victory class, named Bowling Green. What were they thinking?

wow that was actually a good read. I had no idea about that conspiracy theory involving USS Toledo and as far fetched as it may or may not be it was an entertaining read.

The Victory Class comprised WWII cargo ships. There were over 500 of them built for the war effort. The ships were mostly named after allied nations, U.S. cities, and educational institutions. Bowling Green was likely named after the KY city but that isn't certain. If I remember, there were a few Ohio colleges which adorned these vessels (Western Reserve being one that I'm sure of.)

RE: USS Toledo
I served on The USS Puffer USS Puffer SSN-652

Being born and raised in T-town, I actually tried to get transfered to the USS Toledo. But, at that time they did not need any more electricians and nobody was transfering off anytime soon, so I ended up in San Diego on the Puffer instead. I did my six years active duty, then used my GI bill to attend The University of Toledo. I was amazed at how much of my bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering was review of what the military had crammed in my head.

Interesting that they were lightly armed with soem artillery and 20mm? machine guns. The first ones were apparntly sub bait so they made them faster. My dad served on a destroyer escort which, not surprisingly, escorted convoys of these carrying war material from NYC to England. Had one contact with a U-Boat and dropped some depth charges, apparantly chasing it off. HE said they went too fast for U-boats to effectively chase.

Yes- and I think the commander was from bg-you remember the commander that said "What happens if I pull this little round plug in the floor?"

That reminds me of a claim we had. Arkansas. A guy new to boating with a 30 year old 38' motor yacht. He had water in his bilge and thought the bottom plug was leaking so he unscrewed it to inspect.

Glug, glug, glug.

Lore is written with claims like that.
