RE: Observations from DU
Denver is a very competitive sports market. You have 7-8 pro teams here, 4 D-I colleges within an hour's drive and world class skiiing and other recreatation/culture competing for people's attention. Getting media coverage is tough here. We also are an expensive private school with a majority of kids from out of state, so there is little local allegiance to DU. Finally, we sellout 6,000 a game for hockey, which is the dominant winter sport at DU, and that's where the fan energy is. DU is also a small school, with only 5,000 undergrads and skiing is where many of the non-spectators are.
Add in the fact that the area has little basketball tradition (CU, CSU and Air Force don't draw either), high school basketball is poor here, and DU competes in a conference where Sun Belt schools are as little known as Colorado schools are in the south, and the school has an upill battle to win fans here.
