I thought about what it would take to show all the conferences, instead of just C-USA and the BCS like I did on the zones map... Because of all the overlapping, there wasn't room on the map to even show the MAC and Sunbelt. So, I came up with lines instead of zones....
Here are all 11 1-A football conferences, as of 2005.
Serious thoughts....
1. What the heck is Idaho doing in the Sun Belt?
2. What the heck is La Tech doing in the WAC?
3. Compactness alone is not a automatic push for the BCS or anything like that... look who's the most compact: the MAC. However, they do have conference stability... which is a good thing.
Before Tulsa, Rice and SMU left, the WAC was not as bad a prospect. Now, Tech is on an island.
4- Why is TCU in the MWC?
5- What was UCF doing in the MAC?

Wouldn't it make sense for La Tech and Idaho to switch conferences?
Since when do commisioners think logically???
Would it make sense, sure. Will it happen, probably not.
TUDIEHARD Wrote:4- Why is TCU in the MWC?
We know why they're in the MWC... they're going to the BCS, didn't you hear?
TUDIEHARD Wrote:5- What was UCF doing in the MAC?
UCF needed a football conference. They are Atlantic Sun for everything else, but couldn't find anywhere else for their football team.

Amen!
As I've said before, in a logical world, Marshall and WVU would be in the Big East and USF and UCF would be in C-USA. But given the choice, I'd take Marshall and UCF in a heartbeat over the other two.
Idaho thank goodness is Football only. They should try to get in the WAC and very soon, especially since USU and NMSU are gone. Expect Denver to jump to the Mid-Continent but they ar3e not Football so it does not matter. Also hopefully ULM will become a full-time member and drop their Southland Affiliation.
Still some of the conferences are screwy.
Eagle,
What program did you use to make the maps?
I looked up the cities I didn't already know in Yahoo! Maps and plotted the points and drew the lines using GraphicConverter, a drawing program, using my eye.
Not as effective as ArcGIS... but it got the job done, huh?
TUDIEHARD Wrote:4- Why is TCU in the MWC?
Why is Marshall in CUSA? Why was Tulsa in the same conference as Hawaii? The BCS has turned normally logical people into illogical ones. While this is very interesting, it is a whole lot more than just lines on a map.

I thought that was the algorithm from Hillary's Government Healthcare plan!!
Hurts my eyes too much!

The Sun Belt showed interest in UCF before we took the MAC's football-only invitation. However, without a bowl tie-in firmed up at the time, UCF wasn't interested in the Sun Belt's offer.
The Atlantic Sun has a nicer geographic alignment than Conference USA, but obviously the difference in revenue and national reputation between the two conferences is quite huge. The A-Sun has member schools in Florida (4, soon to be 2), Georgia (2), Alabama (1, soon to be 0), Tennessee (2), and North Carolina (2).

Apologies... didn't mean to oversimplify it!

Idaho and La Tech need to switch to other conferences, in my opinion. I can see why La Tech would take a long hard look at C-USA. The question is, will C-USA extend an invitation?

Sorry it wasn't Hillary's Health Care plan. Then you could've at least seen a doctor about your eyes. In 5 years, or so, if you're lucky, but you'd see a doctor eventually..... :D

From what I can tell about their football program, Idaho needs to drop to I-AA and get a rivalry going with Montana.
The straight lines are better, but instead of simply connecting cities, connect the outermost cities with straight lines to show the area boundaries.
Something like this?

I see the circles for Notre Dame, Army and Navy - but you need to add one for Temple too.

Thanks! Also, I forgot to connect Hawaii.... should be correct now.
SouthGA, this is a great service you've provided. I think this is almost a candidate to be pinned, at least while the expansion chatter is going on.
And looking at this latest map, it's so obvious to me that the Big East screwed up royally when they invited USF instead of ECU. I just can't imagine what was going through their mind when they did that. It's no contest to me. Oh well, their loss is C-USA's gain.
Anyone else notice how much activity there is down in our part of the country? Got the C-USA, SEC, Big XII, ACC, and Sunbelt all overlapping.

Thank you very much. I did it for my own self interest, and was glad to share it with the CUSABBS....

Well, no matter where you are in the country, I think the Sunbelt has got you covered! All they need to do is take Buffalo and Hawaii!
Yeah, that's what I mean. It is as I thought: The new C-USA has a very sensible geographical footprint now.
This tells last map tells me that SEC is a subset of C-USA
I need to look into your mapping program. I know ARCGIS is amazing and MapInfo is ok, but is not very user friendly and AutoCAD I have no experience but I might be able to learn if I land another job.
Good looking maps though.

delete ... sorry double post....

I swear, all I'm doing is plotting points by pasting little dots on a map where they look like they should be. The lines are me drawing 2 pt. lines from one point to the next in my graphics program. The base map is a master for a Social Studies textbook I found as a PDF.
Now I'm using ArcGIS with my thesis quite a bit... but this is just for fun.
Thanks for the compliments... I'm glad to know my maps are appreciated.

nope... Arkansas lies slightly out of the C-USA boundary! Of course, I frehanded the position of Fayetteville, so I could nudge it a bit to the SE and make it fit. :D

Hey, if you want to have fun making an Atlantic Sun map, I'll give you the names of the cities/towns in the conference:
Florida: Orlando (UCF), Deland (Stetson), Boca Raton (Florida Atlantic), Jacksonville (Jacksonville University)
Alabama: Troy (Troy State)
Georgia: Atlanta (Georgia State), Macon (Mercer)
North Carolina: Buies Creek (Campbell), Boiling Springs (Gardner-Webb)
Tennessee: Nashville (Belmont and Lipscomb)
Knock yourself out. :D
Until UCF leaves for C-USA, Troy and FAU leaves for the Sunbelt, ETSU joins up, having left the Socon...
Were you serious? Just a minute... it won't take too long.

Is this more of that esoterical knowledge on which conference makes the sign of the beast?? I think it might be the SEC
How about a C-USA footprint with Miami (OH) as the 12th member? That would make a lot os sense geographically (not to mention academically and football-wise). I'll bet Miami's basketball recruiting would improve drastically in C-USA which is well-known in the Cincinnatti area.

My Miami Map is in part III of the series, which looks at expansion.

Very nice. However, I think that Memphis is much closer to the southwest tip of Tennessee than you're showing it. The Mississippi River separates us from Arkansas.
