Expansion will be the focus of today’s teleconference of the league’s 11 university presidents. Texas-El Paso is the leading candidate, according to numerous reports, and the Western Athletic Conference member could accept an invitation this afternoon.

opcorn:
You know, I feel for Karl Benson, but I think he would be smart to adopt the Rick Chryst approach to all of this, and just refrain from commenting publicly... I'm not sure how he perceives it's helping the WAC's image to just continually show up in the papers with this defiant (some would say masochistic) stance... I'm sure he's a great person, but it makes the WAC look weaker, imho.

Agreed.
Henshaw wrong about one thing: there will be NO divisional alignment for Basketball. I heard Calipari talk ad nauseum on the subject and he fought to get rid of divisional alignments for years in CUSA. He said look what happened when we finally did it: 6 teams in NCAA.
It would be insane not to have divisions in basketball given the geography of the conference. 2X5 = 10 Division games, 6 against the other division for a total of 16. Perfect.

I agree.

I like that plan as well. Otherwise, how do you make up the schedule? It would seem to be nightmarish without some kind of divisional setup.
Having said that, I only want divisions for scheduling... not for the standings. The Big XII does it that way - they use the football divisions for scheduling, but those are invisible in the standings, where everyone is listed 1-12. I hate the SEC basketball divisions...
"...we believe strongly that we have much more to offer than Conference USA," Benson said.
Is Karl Benson related to Baghdad Bob?
