Since we are between sports (ok, I know baseball and softball are on going). Let's educate some of the younger generation about the good ole days when UAB really was a commuter college.

My favorite:

The Bldg. 1 Concourse, 1st Floor with all the vending machines. Before the Hill University Center, this was the only place for students to pass time before classes.

2nd

The Gravel Pit parking lot where the Alys Stephens Center is currently located.

Any more? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? ;-)
Bell Gym...the practice facility for the bball team...
What is building 1? The Education building?

2001 was my freshman year. Things I remember that are gone:

Blazer and University Halls. The Garden Apts. CB15, OB15. :)
When the majority of the campus consisted of buildings 1,2,3 I never understood why building No. 1 was in the middle.

Engineering classes were in a building between 19th and 20th.

Standing in line on second floor balcony to pull cards for freshman english.

The gravel parking lots where Bartow and the U.C. are located.

Last, the metal building in the parking lot housed the book store, which became the 15th street class room building.

You're may have to explain batch cards to some of the young folks. Those were the days, uh? lmfao

does the men's room at the Humanities Building count as an icon?

some of you will get that joke, and some of you won't.

lmfao
Oh, and apparently there was like a small diner or some kind of eatery in the Humanities Bldg when I started, but being a CS major at the time I only had one class over there and didn't really venture around much upstairs. I never actually saw it, but heard people talking about it, I thought....Anyone remember that?
The old McDonalds on 6th Ave with the dining room in a separate building from the ordering counters (which were in one of the old style buildings with the yellow arches going over the sides).

----------------------

One of my professors (who shall remain nameless) took an out-of-town lecturer to "Mabel's Beauty Shop and Chain Saw Repair" for a drink because he thought the name was cool. He had no idea what kind of establishment it really was. lmfao
On Thursdays there was the roast beef and gravy sub at the cafeteria in the Jefferson tower. Talk about a cholesterol special, but it was sooooooo good!

Please elaborate

NO DON"T! lmfao

I am guessing Building One was Building One because it was built first.

Does anyone remember those horrible oddly shaped apartment dorms located where the Rec center is now. I lived one semester in those rat infested rooms, but had good times nonetheless.

What about Movie nights at Cudworth Hall?

History classes in Ullmann.
Bell Theatre.
Campbell Hall as the University Center before the UC was built.
The Pool Tables in the UC center.
The bank of ATM's for every bank in the city at the UC center.

Some of these may be still around, but those are some memories off the top of my head.
A haught that's older than me is "The Burley Earl". I've has several lunches there...however, I remember some old fogie babbling about how it used to be a big student hang-out...

I was the UAB Film Series Chairman from 82-84, and the Chief Projectionist. Hell yeah I remember Cudworth.

I had the priviledge(?) of ordering, scheduling, and showing UAB's first ever X rated movie.

Trivia time: What as it?

03-old I was at UAB when they had to change their name. You were probably still in diapers. It was still called Burly Earl's my first 2(?) years in B'ham. They had to change it due to a trademark dispute. I think it was 1987.

We had our weekly lab meeting there every Friday afternoon. 04-rock

Good guess, but here's a hint: The X rated movie was actually animated. That should give it away.

The Hideaway Cafe. The grilled cheese and fries was the staple. Your heart hasn't struggled until you have eaten that at least once.

The original Honors House, which was a duplex on 15th Street, was also one of my favorite hangouts. The old church didn't become the current Honors House until the third year of the program.

Another good guess, but I don't believe "Heavy Metal" was x rated. However, it was, along with "Wizards" one of my favorites.

One more hint: Fritz Lang

My first year, I lived in the apt. building on Highland between the synagogue and the radio station.

Dugan's
Louie Louie
The Sneaky Pete's trailer

BTW, I think the Earl still has one of their old signs leaning on the wall behind the building.

Fritz the Cat.

though Alice in Wonderland would be a good guess, too.

"The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat" to be exact!

Another first was showing outdoor movies in the small amphitheater between Bldg. 1 and the undergrade library: Eating Raoul and Andy Warhol's Frankenstein. Later, we did Rocky Horror outside to save the new (at the time) theater at Hill from total destruction.

Biggest crowds ever at Cudworth were:

Woodstock
The Grateful Dead (can't remember which one, maybe the first concert film they did)
Monty Python's Holy Grail (3 nights of a great American classic, all SRO)

My wife and I had our first date at Mancha's. I loved, and lived for, the Killer Whale coated with Agent Orange. I was fortunate enough to know Carl. What a character he was. I was also fortunate enough to be dining there the night Carl decided to add Margaritas to the menu, because everyone in the restaurant spent the night "tasting" them until they were perfected.

Oldest continually employed UAB icon: Andy Marsh

He was hired in 1983, my Junior year and the year Hill University Center opened.
I heard there were some interesting films shown in the Humanities Building bathroom lmfao
Although I'm glad the 15th street classroom building is gone, I had a lot of classes there, and I'll remember it always.

However, the thing I can hardly imagine is going to UAB and not having the 5 Points Music Hall to go out to on Thursdays - Saturdays. I know there's something else there now, but the Music Hall was a staple of UAB party life from about 1995 until a few years ago. Before that, of course, was Louie Louie, which closed shortly after my arrival to UAB.

Is TC's still open?
Does the upside-down PLAZA still exist?
The "ritual":

Monday: $1 tacos and 75 cent draft at Cuco's on Greensprings
Tuesday: Penny beer at TC's
Wednesday: Penny beer at Club South
Thursday: College night in 5 points (Music Hall, Louie's, Studio, Plaza, etc.)
Friday: Penny beer at Club South
Saturday: Hang at the fraternity house...everything was too expensive (read: normal price)

Somehow classes fit in there...

BlazerFromMD Wrote:

Yep. I was there Saturday. But don't ever call it the upside-down Plaza...that name came after a storm blew the sign upside down and they never fixed it. It's just the Plaza.

Hoppers was the happenin' place during my stint as a student. That and Clyde Houstons.

The Fried Mushrooms at Rube Burrows was a must before any basketball game.

+3

How about 3 for 1s at the Coutyard on Tuesdays.

Disclosure: I was a Samford Undergrad but I am one of the few who could go to a Baptist University and drink my way into the Army.
When I was in school for a while, we had it figured out how to get cheap beer 5 nights of the week, but for the life of me, I can't remember where those places were. lmfao

OK, now everyone feeling nostalgic, finish this sentence:

When I was in college ...

Here's mine: When I was in college, we were so broke we used to go eat off the buffet at the Sammy's happy hour!
T Cs is still open, though me and my group of friends haven't been in a while because I think they started charging a cover, plus its always very very crowded.

And Club South still has cheap beer, I think penny beer night is thursday. Formaggio's also has cheap beer (pitchers) on Thursday nights too.
When I was at UAB:

I was one of the few that dared to ride a bicycle to school, work, etc. Dating at that time was none existent.

When I finally was able to buy a lemon, I would find a parking spot on 14th street or near the tennis courts (it wasn't a lot 15 designation back then) and then rollerblade to all my classes going back and forth to the car for my books. That was when there were only about 3 parking lots designated as LOT15 and each only had about 100 spaces or so it seemed.

I definately remember "Penny beer at TC's" on Thursday. No class on Friday so it was a blast. Zydeco's became my pub of choice when I moved across the street from University Credit Union on 15th Ave.

Train at the Music Hall was memorable.

Waking up to the bomb squad banging on my friend's door when the abortion clinic bombing happened. I wasn't able to get my car out of Rast Hall parking lot until the next day. Work didn't believe me.

Playing basketball on the courts near Rast when it used to be safe.

Laughing at all the "art" sculptures around "campus".

penny beer at Club South is still Wednesdays and Fridays. They serve $2 shots now starting at 9pm...

When I was in college the girls actually looked 18. Now I drive through campus and wonder what these 12-year-olds are doing there...but maybe I'm just getting old.

You know you have been out of school a long time when people are having memories of things that are no longer there, and those things did not even exist when you were in school. Example - Five points Music Hall.
03-idea When I was in college.... I was soooooooo poooorrrr:
I used to get a parking ticket and then illegally park and put the same ticket under my windshield wiper blade as if I had just gotten it... It worked until 1996 when they started scanning the tickets. They also used to chalk the tires on your car to identify it. I remember running out between classes and spraying my tires down with water, backing out and back in to rub off the chalk. Ahhhhh, those were the days....
Hey MB, I lived in that old rat trap with my wife, wasn't it Blazer Hall and shaped like a big plus sign? That dam^ place was infested with roaches when we moved in. The first place we lived as a married couple. We bug-bombed the place and the floor was literally covered with roaches: THOUSANDS. It was so bad we went to the housing office and the director came to our room because he didn't believe it. After that, they commercially exterminated and cleaned the place AND paid for us to stay in a hotel for 2 days. THOSE WERE THE DAYS!!! 04-rock

Milo's is where Wendy's used to be near the hospital. I think the building is the Southside Station apartments. sad to see wendy's leave but at least it wasn't replaced with a mcdonalds :)

I can't believe no one has mentioned Al's yet. This was a staple of mine in undergrad and to this day I will spend a couple hours there studying on nights when I have a test. And there's always someone there no matter what time of day or night.

I also noticed the other day when I was exploring the bowels of Volker that they used to have a Wall Street Deli. What's left of it is on the west side near Lecture Room D.
What was the name of the sandwich shop up University (east) past the VA and across the street. They had killer egg and cheese biscuits that my wife and I would get after I worked nights at the VA.
When I come back to visit Birmingham, I am already planning my "Food Tour"

I hope these places are still around:

La Cocina -- for the chimichanga
Dugan's -- for the cheeseburger and fat onion rings
O'Carr's -- for the chicken salad and fruit lunch
J. Alexander's -- for dinner
Surin West -- for everything
Fish Market -- for the cheap but good fish and the crabclaws.
Milo's -- self explanatory
Savage's -- for the truffles!
Remember "Baby Does" and the club "singles"?

Dugan's is no more. Fish Market has moved into a much bigger and nicer building right behind the old one. It's an old converted warehouse. Everything else is still open.

P.S. You deserve to have your man card taken for actually wanting to eat at O'Carr's.
