I don't consider having 4 members as being active. The same thing happened to Theta Chi my freshman year. The charter was pulled because of lack of numbers.

dfarr is talking out his arse again as usual. there were some other issues that led to ato's demise including a gpa that rivaled Delta Tau Chi.

Baby Doe's became a rapist's playground - drunk women - leaving alone - unmonitored isolated and dark parking lot - easy pickin's. Some of these women were very, very close to me. I helped put 2 of these jerk's in jail.
That's a major reason the place didn't make it.
On the upside - Burly's Earl, Andrew's, Sneaky Pete's, Waite's for b'fast, Ollie's - some really good memories.

I forgot about the tennis courts on eigth under the nurses dorm - no longer there - those nurses were loud and nasty.
Unfortunately, you're dead on about the demise of Baby Doe's. I never understood why they never hire a security service. Best view of Birmingham's skyline available to us common folks ever!
Andrew's, that brings back memories of my 30 - inch waistline! I helped Mr. Jebeles' (the owner) youngest daughter pass business calculus and recieved free fries for about a year. Best and strongest ice tea I ever had (yes, better than Milo's). The tea was so strong that no amount of ice would dilute the tea and make it watery.

Well, I'm surprised nobody has put in the weekly plans for the late nineties.
Walker, Scott, Ben, KT, Alan...I know you guys all went to TC's on Tuesdays for penny beer and on Thursdays We would meet at Sidewalk and then walk over to the music hall.

I'll add Delta Chi to that list. I was a Charter Member of the Delta Chi colony in the 70's. Things went pretty well until we were invited to a party with the Delta Chi's from Tuscaloosa. We got into a brawl and things went south from there as far as our Delta Chi affiliation was concerned.

I remeber 2 things from the nights @ Louie's....
Bringing rolls of quarters to buy beer, and then breaking in a gold card I got from Visa there. I think I spent $200 on Jager alone.

LOL. That reminds me of the time I didn't make it to the front door. Actually woke up on the sidewalk in front of my grandmother's house at sunrise. She's nudging me with a broom - tells me to get to bed. (Was never in a fraternity - lived with my grandma during my freshman year.)
Either she was really cool or her dementia was kicking in early - either way she was a joy and I loved her.

the last time i went to louie louie's a girl dropped her purse and her $25 .25 Raven went off and shot some poor guy in the ***. the place went from standing room only to empty in seconds. i was also kicked out of louies for getting people to give me free beers to watch a friend of mine break bud long neck bottles on his forehead.
my favorite hang out while i was at uab was the girls dorms at birmingham southern. they allowed overnight male visitors durring the mid 80's. nothing better than a LIBERAL ARTS college for extracurricular activities.
--I never paid for parking while at UAB (5 years), always parking in the small lot of an apartment building located behind the new Snoozy's.
--Fat Sam's, people, is the ultimate undergrad hang out. FAT SAM'S, free sweet tea with a student ID (same at Al's)
--Intramural sports kicked ***. My soccer team, The Alpha Omega Beta Theta Hataz, won three consecutive titles. The frats hated us.
--Eric Rudolph bombed the abortion clinic my freshman year. That was a sad day to be on Southside.
--There was a frat house located across the street from Fat Sam's. Me and soccer team buddies stole one of their lions one night and put it in front of our house. (My friends lived next to George Ward Park.)

Not sure if they ALLOWED it when I was in school, but I spent my share of nights in some of the old dorms (traditional group bathroom, showers), and the new Bruno dorm (like Rast Hall). Getting in at 3am was easy, getting out unseen was a little harder. But just walked out by yourself, if caught they couldn't prove who you were there with.

For the record, we were dressed up as Batman and Robin as volunteer hours for UAB showing the movie in the parking lot of transportation services...

I very well could be wrong. That still doesn't dispute the fact that they were nearly invisible my last year, which I believe was the year before they got their charter pulled. I hosted the Greek Awards in 2004 and didn't see a single one there.
You can be right and there could have been 17 "actives" at the time, but like I said they weren't doing anything on campus at the time.
If I remember correctly, ATO was removed because of not attaining goals set by the national organization. Now that could include being in debt to nationals, but I do remember HUC 440 telling the other chapters that they were removed due to lack of membership. Hence, IFC underwent a major recruitment overhaul designed to help out two other struggling chapters. The plan worked because both chapters have increased membership.
Just throwing my 2 cents out there since everyone is gaining up on dfarr.

im just going by what the letter national sent me, as a former uab ato, the reasons were and what people involved told me. which is one hell of a lot more accurate than dfarrs reason based on his observation.
the Nick - (The Wooden Nickel)
the Steak and Egg
The OLD Grants
waking up in the Western supermarket parkinglot after closing the origional PLAZA
Dugan's
And the place next to Dugans that they closed about 5 different times for selling coke.
There was an old bar maybe around cobb lane that would bring in a good band occasionally. I remember seeing CCR there (w/o Fogerty)
Uhh... what about Shop-A-Snack?

A fraternity brother and I were walking back to the house from the Shop-a-snack and we got robbed at gun point. The police drove up and arrested the people. Here is the funny part, turns out that two of the "robbers" went to school with me at Vestavia and the other two went to hoover.
I just find it funny because nobody would guess these people would be from that area.

It's still there and it still sells to anyone who can see over the counter, although the prices are more jacked up than a regular liquor store.
