Senator Barack Obama is about to address the congregation of the Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church in Selma, AL.
It's LIVE on C-SPAN right now if anyone's interested.
I'd rather vomit... Let me gues, take from the wealthy, give to the poor. Healthcare for everyone. Get us out of the war. Yada, yada, yada.
Don't forget 'down with whitey'...it IS taking place at a black church, after all. ;-) lmfao
Still, a big political figure with presidential aspirations is making a trip toward our neck of the country--and about 60 miles north of me. So I'm darned interested.
(BTW, Karl Rove is scheduled to visit Troy University later this year. That'd be interesting to partake of also.)

This is a classic example of what is wrong with the conservative right in this country. It's easier for them to hate indiscriminately and remain ignorant than it is to educate themselves and effect change.
Your missing one hell of a speech.

Actually, I'm watching it.
Hillary is speaking.
Quick...what channel is Arena Football on?
And yes, I'm being serious. Obama's appearance had been scheduled for months in advance, and Clinton's appearance at another church had only come a few weeks ago.
I might stick around for a little bit, but I really have little interest in what she has to say.

I've spent too much time in Birmingham. I actually thought the rest of the state had changed. I guess I was wrong

Methinks that Obama is making the junior senator from New York a might nervous.

I don't think she expected him (or any other Democratic candidate) to be doing this well, this soon. She's practically tailing him.

What I think is funny is that Al Gore is trailing Hillary by just a few points and he's not even running.

Ok, you win. Take my 401K that I've worked hard to grow, take my 6 bedroom home that I've worked hard to earn, take my grass cutter that I've worked hard to have, take my daughter's braces thqt I worked hard to pay cash for. Hell, I'm saving now for a convertible, so that I can have some fun in my 40's. Hell, take it as well. give it to some who 'deserves it'.
I'm interested in how 'packed' it is at Selma's First Baptist Church where Hillary is speaking...just 300 yards away from Brown Chapel AME, where Obama spoke.
One of the pastors from Brown commented that there was a mass crowd outside that couldn't get in.

Not all dirty godless liberals want you to live in a 1 bedroom house and let everyone else live without having a job. Anyway, my point was that I figured we'd be over stereotyping, but I can see that nothing has really changed.
mixduptransistor Wrote:What I think is funny is that Al Gore is trailing Hillary by just a few points and he's not even running.
Just another sign that her last name won't be enough to win Democrats and moderates.
I'd be VERY surprised if Gore decided to run. I think he's honestly having too much 'fun' with his efforts outside of the presidency. Of course, he could directly/semi-directly influence policy changes as president as we know he'd definitely want. People who have worked on his previous campaign claim he could raise upwards of $50 million in almost no time.
Please have some compassion. No one wants to take your money, your house, and your car to give to the less fortunate. I grew it in the Black Belt and I can tell you poverty is real. If you have lived on the other side of the tracks you would have more compassion for others.

Well my man, if you really want to know who will eventually take your 401k and all of the other things you've worked for, it's called the
Military-Industrial Complex and it
black (hidden budget) aka Halliburton Corp, cronyism and corruption with Government Contracts and the crooked lobbyists and congressmen on the take, the likes of Randy "Duke" Cunningham who steal millions dollars.
Take time to read Chalmer Johnson's trilogy of books, (1) Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of American Empire, (2)The Sorrows of Empire: Militarism, Secrecy, and the End of the Republic and(3) Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic.
3 questions for Mr. Barack Hussein Obama.
Sir where do you stand on:
1) Abortion
2) Gun Control
3) Gay Marriage
His answers on those 3 questions will tell you what kind of leader he would be. A real leader or just another politician.

There are plenty of people from the other side of the tracks who have gone on to make their lives great.
Also, people like mobileblazer & myself aren't against giving to the less fortunate, we just believe that there are much more effective ways of helping the impoverished than in the form of government handouts. Private charities are much more efficient and more of their money actually goes to the people who actually need it instead of helping to pay the salaries of a bunch of desk jockeys.

I could not have said it better.
I regularly give to charity, but it is a choice and not forced upon me.

+1 I grew up there to and it's real and not only in Alabama's Black Belt, but also in the MS delta.

The sad thing is those three issues should have absolutely nothing to do with government or the presidency, and are completely irrelevant to the future of this country or to any of us in our daily lives. Yet, they are the three issues that will determine how most of our mindless electorate cast their ballots.

I guess I'm old. I remember when politicians gave more than just lip service to the Constitution.
When John Kennedy was running for President, much was made of his being a Catholic. Indeed, his catholicism was used to attack his candidacy. It was said that JFK would be a tool of the Pope and that his policies would be driven by his church.
JFK chose to meet these whispers head on, and did a speech that directly addressed such charges. I think what he said then should still be applicable... but few candidates would have the guts to say it and mean it today.

Pretty good speech, but, alot of victim thinking also. He hit on some major points.
Not saying, what and how I can do something.... but, why, when , where the government will do something.
The problem with this country, as a whole, is we rely on the government to bail us out instead of being personally accountable for our on actions.
This gov't is not about to bail out any but the rich. It gives the ones who make 6 figure salaries($100,000 or more) most of the benefits of its welfare programs called "tax cuts" and cuts capital gains taxes to almost single digit rates. Keep in mind that when your yearly earnings pass $90,000, you no longer are cut for FICA- you have a "free ride" for the rest of the year. If someone wanted to take a whack at the SSA problem, how about just letting the tax apply with NO cut-off point? How about applying it to ALL income no matter how derived-included capital gains. Why should any taxes end when you become too rich to have to pay them?

Thank you!
Maybe one day the rest of America will understand this.
I attended the event on Sunday. It was cool to see 2 contenders showing some love to Alabama.
1. Bill Clinton overshadowed everyone. Especially Hillary. I marched about 15-20 feet behind the clintons over the bridge, and everyone was shouting "BILL BILL BILL" I think I heard people cheer Hillary about 5 times.
2. Both churches were jam packed for Obama and Clinton. You would have to arrive 3 hours ahead of time to get a spot in line to get in either church. The churches looked to only hold about 200 each.
3. The line at Obama's church was 2-3 times as long as Hillary's (even though you could tell most of the people in line wouldn't get in because they were so long). There was much more excitement at Obama's camp.
4. Obama shook lots of hands, and played to the crowd. Hillary went in the back door of the church with just a wave to the crowd. I don't know if Hillary shook any hands later in the day, but she seemed cold as usual.
5. Bill Clinton is a superstar in Selma. Hillary proved that she is vounerable by bringing Bill along to carry her water.
All in all, I thought it was an awesome trip. I don't necessarily agree with all of their politics, but I am interested in hearing what the different candidates have to offer. It was neat to take part in a historical and cultural event that might have an impact on the 2008 election.
If I was to declare winners:
1. Bill
2. Obama
3. Hillary
Wow. Bill still carries a lot of weight, doesn't he?
