would not approve Jimbo Fisher deal to UAB.

"Y'all cain't have ole Jimbo cause he be too xpensive for UAB. We gone give y'all a real cheap goodun' in ole Callaway. Besides we needs to keep ole Jimbo free to come to Tuscalooser and be offensive cooridinator for our new 40 million dollar coach Sabin. Now y'all go on out there and have your little stealth presser and act like you like it or we'll shut down your pitiful little excuse for a footbal program, go on now git."

Free UAB from this nonsensical UA BoT. Birmingham is bigger than Tuscaloosa.
If Saban wants Jimbo, I'd like to see the reaction of the BoT when that request gets passed across their desk.

Can they really tell Saban "No" when they just allowed the Bama Athletic Department to shell out all that cash for his contract?

They might have just put themselves in a Catch 22 position: tell Saban "No Jimbo", Saban gets pissed and asks that scary question "Why?"; allow Saban to hire Jimbo and let SACS sort out the details publicly.

Way to go, BoT!

1) they never thought about it like that.
2) why would they care?
3) answer, they don't.
4) whomever saban wants for however much he wants has already been cleared by the BOT.
5) SACs isn't going to do anything to them or to UofA system.
6) Alabama football can pay for it, UAB can't. Sorry folks, but that's the truth.

Until UAB athletics isn't running a deficit, not going to get very far with this.
Once again, UAB should NOT be compared to BAMMER. By anyone.

UAB should be compared to the Memphis' & Southern Mississippi's in the conference.

Just because BAMMER is all high & mighty doesn't mean that everyone else should be living up to their expectations.

Payback will come. It may not be visible to everyone, but one day payback will come.

It may be in a form of a college stuck with a long term contract with a head coach that they may no longer want.

UAB should not give a damn about what BAMMER brings in, nor should the BOT be comparing the two.

OPPORTUNITY people - that is what we are talking about.

We have gone through opportunities for women, minorities, etc.

This is just OPPORTUNITY on an athletic scale.

normally its part of the head coaches contract.... how much he has to spend on assistant coaches.

Sounds nice, but the bills have to be paid.
UAB will never control its own destiny as long as university money is paying the bills. The BOT may be evil, etc., but they hold the cards until UAB can pay the fare.

I'm really surprised that this bogus logic flies with you FM. Trying to pass that logic off on us was the BOT strategy for handling the blocking of Jimbo (even though donations were reportedly paying the part of his salary beyond what Watson was making).

Almost no new businesses jump out of the gate making a profit. Most start out by asking someone or some entity to take a substantial risk in return for the possibility of a later return on the investment. The people on the BOT are well aware of that. They are hiding behind the profit curtain and taking out of the side of their mouth. There are plenty of reasons to believe that given the chance, UAB Football will be a successful venture, regardless it is important for the school moving forward. This is evidenced by kids at UAB who root for and wear gear from other schools. Why do they wear that? It isn't because they really like Alabama's law school or Auburn's engineering school - it is because of their football teams.

The school has a lot of things going for it. One thing it doesn't have is much school spirit (compared to other campuses). Football is very instrumental in generating that. It also gives the school national exposure and a national face that is incredibly valuable. What would we know of Notre Dame if they didn't have a football team? U of Michigan is an incredible school academically, but most people know of them because of their blue and yellow uniforms and Hail to the Victors. If the BOT really supports UAB realizing its full potential, pumping money into the football team, regardless of the immediate return, is really a no brainer. Only if they wanted UAB to exist as some second alternative school would they play some absurd game and deny it opportunities based on its financial performance at this point in its timeline.

If they won't let it run a deficit for 10-20 years or so to market an attractive product - it won't ever have a chance to run a surplus. And based on their latest action - even if I won the lottery and gave it all to the football program - somehow this would still be an excuse.

Did I say I agree with it?
I'm just telling you the straight-up deal.
UAB isn't winning that fight until the bills are paid. Period. End of discussion. If UAB people have a problem with it, then instead of writing letters to SACs they need to be writing checks to the athletic department.

I have blistered the BOT more than most people out there. But they hold the power and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. So folks better deal in reality and not in "I wish."
I've posted it before, and it's worth posting again: We need to start our own athletic booster club/organization. Like the Blazer Club, except it should be it's own organization. Start raising monies for the likes of coaching salary augmnetation, facilities upgrades, etc. All big schools have one, and we should. too. Heck, I don't make much: I work for Uncle Sam, but I'm willing to do my part and make an annual donation for a venture such as this. Now, I don't know the legal jockying regarding setting something like this into motion, but I'm sure one of you smart fellers does. I'm sure we do have some alumns who are 1) monetarily well-endowed and 2) publically well-connected for the likes of something like this. I'm just an idea guy at this point, BUT LET"S MAKE THIS HAPPEN. THIS IS A PIVOTAL STEP TO SELF-EMPOWERMENT FOR OUR ATHLETICS. SCREW THE bot AND THE ENTIRE SNAGGLE-TOOTHED, BEAR LUVIN', COUSIN FRENCH KISSIN', bammer IDIOTS. LET'S JUST FREAKIN DO IT!!! 05-mafia

Fair enough - but you seem to have just decided to accept them behaving badly. They have a duty to the University System and to the citizens of the state - pigeonholing UAB is a violation of that.

If we just have to accept it, then I'm afraid they may have already won. We're back at the chicken and the egg analogy once again...

And what does it matter if checks are written to the atheletic department if the BOT won't let them spend them? (Pat Sullivan and Jimbo Fisher examples).

I never was much for the conspiracy theories, but after the last two months I'm beginning to wonder what would happen if we got lucky and pulled a Boise State one year - would there all of a sudden be severe scrutiny placed on the financial condition of the athletic department calling for the football program to be discontinued as a financial failure? Should we just accept it as a fact of life?

All I can say is FREE UAB. If UAB was free I wouldnt give a rats a$$ about UAT and the UAT BOT but since the UAT BOT are ours as well this just makes me sick period. Coach NC better win 7 games or else we can pick our on slow talking slow walking coach and fail or succeed on our on terms dammit!!!!!

I'm not sure that the BOT would allow us to run our own program even if we were completely solvent.

I don't think Jesus himself could win 7 games with next years team.

http://www.uaa.ufl.edu/ This is the link to University of Florida private booster, which would be a good model. I'm sure its sit up as a not-for profit, but its kind of a moot point unless someone with some money backs the ideal. But I do think it a good idea.

Now, a reasonable first step! Thanks a million!
Quote:They might have just put themselves in a Catch 22 position

I think they've put UAB in a Catch 22 position. To generate the money we need to pay the bills, we need to put a successful product on the field. To get that successful product, we need to spend money on a coach who is most likely to do that job. The BOT won't let us spend that money, even when it's available. And so the downward spiral begins . . . .

I heard on a radio show that after hiring Stoops and fielding a competitive team, the amount of money made by Oklahoma's football program more than doubled. Just think if we had competitive teams and winning seasons more often than three out of every twelve years.
Guys i'm telling you, I think the direction financially is to raise money to endow the olympic/womens sports, so that football/ basketball can be money makers. An outside organization is something you do after you've put the basics in place.
