A 13 year old kid shot up a middle school with a freaking AK-47. Fortunately, no one was injured and the only shots were "warning shots" up in the air.

I don't know for sure, but I bet Watson Brown is somehow to blame.

The media loves to embellish where it isn't needed.
I have read the articles which say AK-47. More likely, however, it was not an AK-47 (fully automatic), but was instead a Chinese MAK-90 or some other semi-automatic variant. These fire the same ammunition, but are not fully automatic.
A deer rifle would do more damage (and be much more accurate) except maybe that deer rifles generally don't have a high capacity magazine. The MAK-90s come from the gun store with a 5 or so round clip. Higher capacities used to be widely available - I don't know if that is still the case.
He probably got it at a gun show. Everybody knows anyone can buy assault weapons there. This is a prime example of why they should have renewed the Assault Weapons Ban.

Damn that Bush and his worthless Congress!
He probably got it from his dad or someone else's closet when they were not looking. I too would be surprised if it was a full auto weapon, but frankly that won't matter. Taking a swiss army knife with a 2" blade to schoolwill get you sentenced to alternative school or worse nowadays.
Frankly, given recent history, if I were a high school teacher I'd get a permit and carry a pistol and hang the regs that said I couldn't.

The MAK-90 is convertable to fully automatic, and the process is very simple I am told.

I hear that a state law has been proposed(no,I don't know what state) to REQUIRE teachers to be armed. Some have trouble keeping up with the laptop computers they are issued. Imagine the situation-"I just know I put that 357 magnum in my desk this morning!!"

No, a 13 year old cannot buy a gun at a gun show. dumb***.
You and I both know that they don't check ID at gun shows. That's what makes them so popular with criminals and terrorists.

Well, you also know damn well that they're not gonna sell a gun to some kid who looks like he's 13.

That was in Wisconsin, and if that isn't the dumbest thing I have ever heard. What if a kid decides he/she wants that gun? now what are you gonna do?

They're not going to get it from my locked desk drawer.

The person who wrote that proposal is in a boat by himself. Over 90% of the legislature and the voters disaprove. When thinking about school violence, you have to realize that these are kids and kids will fight. However, there are that 1% who have intentions to kill. The other 99% shouldn't have to suffer to to bad parents.
In Huntsville, you can buy a very nice egyptian AK-47 for under 300 dollars at most pawn shops. In alabama you have to be 18, I believe, if I'm not mistaken. The second amendment is bittersweet, yet necessary.

Bittersweet? You've got to be kidding me, right? You should thank God you're so lucky to live in a land where your most basic right- that of self preservation- is secured through the right to arm yourself. The minute you are left defenseless is the moment when some lunatic comes in and opressess the citizenry. The Second Amendment, along with the rest of our Constitution, is what makes our nation so great, namely because it secures our most basic liberties. Speech, religious expression, self preservation, etc., etc. There is nothing bittersweet about that. Kid, you've got a lot of learning to do.

That's why I say it's necessary. I own three hunting rifles myself. If by some crazy twist of things some dictator came to power in our country and the army came marching down my street to take my house, you damn well better believe I'd use those same rifles in the implications that our forefathers had planned as part of the Second Amendment.
That's the sweet part. I guess the bitter part is that it gets abused from time to time by evil and psychotic people. Thus is life though, I suppose.
Access to guns didn't create these monsters. They just provide a convenient means to reak havoc.
Parents, please, for your sake, theirs, and ours, know what the hell your kids are up to.

Sigh....
Tell me what makes the weapons on that list "Assault Weapons".
You go into a combat or assault situation with any of them and you will get waxed. They are fairly crude, mostly inaccurate, semi-automatic weapons. The feature that those weapons have in common is that they look "mean". The bill was worthless political grandstanding in the wake of Columbine.
Also, the assault weapon ban didn't do too much to keep this particular gun away from this kid. If it weren't an AK it would have been a deer rifle or god-forbid a shotgun - neither of which are covered by the AWB and both of which would be far more lethal under the circumstances.
Real assault weapons were already, still are, and will continue to be under very tight federal scrutiny.
As for converting an MAK-90 to fully auto... "or so you are told" doesn't go a long way with me. My grandmother used to say "they say" white shoe polish will help heal burns or "they say" lighting will stike you if you are looking out of a window. You should gather more facts before jumping to conclusions.
Indeed - there are pamphlets on the Internet that show you the needed modifcations.
http://www.ftfindustries.com/Merchant2/m...Code=NP-15
Whether they are easy or not... well most people in this country can't change their own oil or even follow simple directions. Performing those modifications is entirely illegal. Most if not all semi-automatic weapons, including handguns can be similarly modified. Google (or google video) something like fully automatic glock.
See: prohibition, the war on drugs, immigration et al. That is about as good as government banning is going to get... it's a sieve.

Yeah renew the assualt weapons ban. Assualt Weapons are dangerous..
I gotta a couple of SKS's that I have to keep in a locked safe or they will get out and run amok on their own ;-) ;-)
I have never bought a weapon at a gun show that I didnt have to have a back ground check. Not saying that it dosnt happen but I've never seen it.
Quote:He probably got it at a gun show. Everybody knows anyone can buy assault weapons there. This is a prime example of why they should have renewed the Assault Weapons Ban.
I carry a pistol every day, for self protection and on duty. I own several rifles that I use for hunting as well as a shotgun.
If I had to choose an "assult rifle" from my "arsenal" I would choose the M44, The Mosin Nagant M1944 battle rifle. It uses the 7.62x54R cartridge. Is pretty acurate in the hands of a compitent shooter, and is quickly reloadable with stripper clips, Why it even has a cruciform bayonet on it...now THAT! Is an assult rifle.
But you said assult "weapon", didn't you. Well in that case machetes, axes, kitchen knives, baseball bats, and hockey sticks can all be used as weapons, so can sharp sticks and rocks...And buddy if you don't belive that someone can assult you with a rock...think again.
As far as any law or ban goes. They only serve to have a means of punishment for the perpitrator, who if they are inj enough need WILL get a weapon by any means necessary.
Wether it be buying it from a store or a buddy, stealing it from a store or a buddy.
Or creeping into your house while you sleep, cutting your throat with the butcher knife from your kitchen and then just taking it from your closet you were trying to get into when he started stabbing you. Of course he will curse the laws that said you had to put a trigger lock on yor gun, and keep it in a locked cabinet or safe...But I don't think that will keep him from it, he'll just take the keys from your lifeless fingers.

you can buy semi automatic ak-47s or varients just like the chinese SKS they just cost a whole lot more. Also the ban on normal capacity mags expired a while ago so they are more than available. my guess is the kid brought it from home.
