Quote:Key members leave adult entertainment board

Two members of the Metro board that regulates Nashville's adult entertainment industry have stepped down in recent weeks, prompting the cancellation of a meeting last week and possibly one upcoming meeting.

The five-member Sexually Oriented Business Licensing board lost its chairman, Doug Sloan, and vice chairman, Michael Mitchell, when they accepted jobs with Metro.

The Nashville Metropolitan Charter prohibits appointed board members from being employed by the city, said Linda Borum, sex secretary.

"We still have three board members," she said. "We need three members for a quorum. We can continue functioning with three members."

But that wasn't possible last week when board member Carol Etherington, who works with Doctors Without Borders, was out of the country. Her absence caused the cancellation of the meeting for lack
of a quorum and could affect the Sept. 27 meeting, Borum said.

Sloan returned to Metro legal, where he helped craft what later became the ordinance the sex board enforces. Sloan said he will not handle matters related to the sex board.

Mitchell stepped down to accept part-time employment in the human resources department of the Metro police department, Borum said. Mitchell could not be reached at his home for comment.

Metro's adult entertainment ordinance requires that strip clubs, adult bookstores and other businesses obtain licenses and that dancers obtain permits.

The law also prohibits strip performances within 3 feet of patrons, which basically outlaws lap dances.

The law has been challenged in court but has been upheld.
Board members are appointed by Mayor Bill Purcell and confirmed by the Metro Council.

As of Monday afternoon, the mayor's office had not submitted names of any replacement appointees.

I'm glad to hear she can function with just three members....
