I'm a freshman living on-campus at rast hall, and i have a friend down the hall who's an Ambassador and on her way to being an RA next year. Anyway, she went to a big meeting of all the student leadership groups (orientation leaders, ambassadors, etc.) and they told all the people there about the campus improvements next year. They talked about the new green that's under construction, and it's supposed to be really nice. They also said they'd put some large type of tower thing in the center of the new green, like a clock tower or something. What do you all think? It should be pretty nice. It's supposed to be done by next fall semester.

I think the improvements will really help improve the appearance of UAB to recruits and locals. It'll definitely help "clean up the neighborhood."
I just wish the green and proposed tower were more near the actual classroom buildings, but I may be biased since most of my classes are in the BEC on the opposite side of campus.
Definitely beats what used to be there, though.

Bartow Tower? : )
BarTower?
That was horrible. I apologize for that.

No need to apologize if it's actually a bar and a tower.

I could go for that.
I'd prefer the bronze statue of a dragon/Blaze that we (Ambass/OLs/Trailblazers/Honor Programers/etc) proposed my sophmore year....just goes to show how much the administration ACTUALLY listens to student

Dragon statue is only worth it if it breathes fire every hour on the hour.
I hear clock tower and think, "Charles Whitman."
I'm kind of macabre that way, though.

I think there was something about that...but it was a while ago...
Maybe they'll move that Bar Bryant statue over to our new quad. ;-)

I hope so, it would finally give the students their own personal spot for a whole bunch of graffiti.

Hey, pigeons need a place to poop, too. ;-)

yeah, but then all the hippie enviromentalists would complain about it using natural gas for the flame.

I'm one of them liberal hippie enviromentalists.... and I think a fire breathing dragon is a great idea :)
Anyone want to give a rundown of all the things they are planning to do in the near future? I know they are planning on tearing down 15th St. Classroom Building and putting the new academic building on the parking lot that surrounds the classroom building. What about the parking lot on the south side of the chemistry building? Any more parking decks in the works? Are they going to eventually close 15th St. all the way up to 10th Avenue by Rast and Camp?
Of course, if there's a link that details all of this, you can just post that, thanks.

Nothing online yet McCarty... just word of mouth information.
There are renderings online of what the new commons on the green will look like. It's looking VERY nice so far. Once they finish the commons (dining hall) and the new blazer hall, plus the quad and other improvements, I think our campus will be quite something to look at :)
check out the renderings of the new dining hall here:
