Quote:Lakota West senior TE Alex Smith is expected to officially announce his college decision Tuesday morning in a media teleconference, according to Lakota West.
Smith is considering UC, North Carolina and Wisconsin on his short list, according to Lakota West coach Larry Cox.
Smith orally committed to UC in February.

I think this is further proof UC has only a few scholarships to give. This is the time of year schools start telling recruits we have a few spots left and if we dont hear from you we are going to pull our offer. Of course maybe UNC or Wisc is forcing his hand I dont know, guess we'll find out tomorrow.
I'm going UNC in a shocker.

One of the top tight end prospects in the Midwest, Alex Smith (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West), is set to announce his college choice on Tuesday according to Lakota West coach Larry Cox.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder committed to Cincinnati during the winter, but it is not a done deal that he will be a Bearcat. He has not de-committed, but made official visits to Wisconsin and North Carolina.
Smith also made another trip back to North Carolina this past weekend and stayed in Chapel Hill on Sunday night after watching the North Carolina basketball team play on Sunday afternoon.
The Bearcats called Smith a few days ago wanting him to make a final declaration on his college choice. They will have to wait one more day, like everyone else.
Confirmed, UC wants an answer. Most likely they have 2 - 3 scholarships left.

I will tell you.. based on the information I know about this kid.. it could be a huge mistake or a huge blessing.. I will let you know what I think about it when he decides....

Sending you a PM, I know you're close to the Mason program; I have a heads up for you or something you might already know.
I don't blame Kelly & Co for telling him to decide. He's been playing both sides of the fence for a while now, personally I would have considered pulling his offer after he started taking official vists after giving a verbal.
If I had to guess, I'm thinking he sticks with UC tomorrow - I definitely hope so. Yeah, it's been a bit of a hassle for UC, but I don't have that big of a problem with his actions. If he had to do everything over again, he should probably have just followed the Matt James/Jordan Hicks model and looked around all he wanted while committing nowhere until the last minute. And the reality is if he had followed that model and not committed, UC and he would still be pretty much in the same position except nobody would be ticked off at him.
I think his decision will be based on how good of a job that BK did in convincing him that he is here for at least 4 more years. there has been a tremendous amount of negative recruiting regarding BK's status.

Excellent point. If his decision is UC, then I feel much better about BK staying.

Wanes what is the point of calling the kid out on the Enquirer for missing games due to suspension?

I think the part the bothered me most was his actions after the comments he made when he committed. If you aren't sure, don't commit. Agree 100%. But to make the comments he did about recruiting other kids to come here and leading the local contigent to come play here and then follow it up with visiting more colleges than we can count on two hands is what got me. He talked about being a leader. A leader doesn't waffle on his decision. This kid is no leader. His heart hasn't been bearcat and from what I can surmise his family is not behind uc. To me I don't care if he had four stars we don't need him. I am not excited about him potentially being a bearcat. It's bks decision and if he wants him that's all that matters. But I don't think this is th type of kid that the bearcat Renaissance has been built on. I don't k ow about wanes issues but it is true the kid has missed at least two games for some reason. Did he let his teammates down?
Should he become a bearcat I will root for him just like I do all bearcats. But I'm hoping he picks elsewhere.

Yes, 18 year old kids uncertain about decisions that impact the rest of their lives should automatically be disqualified as leaders. Makes a lot of sense to me.
I think leadership is displayed by thoroughly evaulating a dcision then making it and standing by it. I didn't proclaim him a leader. He called himself a leader. Then proceeded to state how he was going to get others to follow him. His words not mine. And then he waffled publicly and for prolonged period all the while remaining softly committed to uc. Um no thanks to that kind of leadrship. And 18 is an adult. And plenty of 18 year olds showing commitment and leadership in Iraq ands afghanistan so savethat lame excuse.

I take it you are no fan of Zach Collaros either - he committed to Kent St. before changing his mind? Let's alert the rest of the team that he isn't a leader. And you must be pissed UC would take a guy like Jibreel Black? Don't forget 4 year starter Mike Mickens.
Do transfers count as failing to "stand behind" their decision? Mauk mustn't have been a leader. And Daniels and Hazelton and Jones and ...
Are you sure you want to make that the standard? Does it go for non-football players too?
On the Scout website is the headline "Bearcats & Smith Part Ways". For further proof, they have removed Smith all together from the commits list where he was previously listed as a Soft Verbal. Guess he ain't coming here.
*edit* Also like to add that under the prospects tab he is listed as having Low interest in UC....................so your saying theres a chance?????
Next man in. Guessing this is best for everyone involved.
Some players fall in love with the recruiting process; you're a rock star and everyone sings your praises wherever you go.
Bearcat Lair is reporting Smith is not going to UC as well
Too bad things didn't work out here. I'm disappointed but I'm confident we'll finish out this class with some quality guys including whoever takes Smith's place. It sounds like there were a lot of odd things happening behind the scenes, but I hope things work out for Alex in the end. I admit I probably won't be rooting for him at wherever he ends up but good luck to him nonetheless.
So I read that smith was suspended 3 different times this year. An would have been suspended for next playoff game had Lakota west won.
Bearcats are better off without him and his act.
I don't know of uc would have had a shot at welch hadthey not had smith commit earlier.
The difference between smith and black is smith supposedly chose uc because he wanted to be here. Black wanted to be here but chose elsewhere for other people. Smith seems to have let others in his family guide his college future. Hope it works out for them but my prediction is you won't hear much of this kid down the road. Uc will be better off without him.
Oh and as rath so eloquently said, "next man in!"

Don't kid yourself 50. Here's what Black said when he committed to Indiana:
Quote:Jibreel Black is honest, confident and ready to win.
“(Indiana) is the perfect opportunity for me to make a difference,” Black said during a phone conversation. “For me to be a groundbreaker at Indiana University.”
Black will likely play defensive end for the Hoosiers, and, with the loss of Jammie Kirlew and Greg Middleton after next season, expects to see playing time early.
But Black (6-foot-2.5, 265 pounds) seems to also see himself as the player who can move mountains — like making Indiana football a winner.
“I am ready to come in, have a winning attitude and win some games,” Black said. “I don’t care about the history of the school. It’s about now. … And hopefully, we’re going to win some championships.
“Hopefully, I can be the one that sets it where other recruits aren’t going to be ashamed to come here. I can be that spark.”
Indiana assistant coach Mike Yeager, Black’s lead recruiter, told Black earlier Monday that he will make a difference at Indiana.
“I can be the Michael Vick of Indiana University,” Black said.
Black commits to IU
Sounds an awful lot like Smith when he committed to UC, no? I don't want to sound like I'm knocking Black - I'm thrilled he changed his mind. I'm just saying don't be a hypocrite - maybe they aren't kids anymore, but they are young and this stuff is new to all of them. Sometimes they change their mind and sometimes they say stuff they shouldn't. Smith is gone - what's the point in bad mouthing him now?
Best of Luck to Alex
I hate to lose out on 4 star Home Talent but this may work out well for UC.
TE is not a position of need for UC with Ben and Robinson back.
I would rather have a WR or another LB, RB or DL.
Here is hoping UC can close the deal with
Matt James
Dion Lewis or Tejay Johnson
IMO UC is much better off without Alex Smith. I won't go into details but he's had some definite off-field issues this season.
UC had stopped recruiting Black also. They didnt pull a Rich Rodriguez move and keep recruiting the kid and get into his head.

Speaking of continuing to recruit after a verbal, I hear Florida is calling and recruiting Andrew Hendrix, or at least taking his temperature regarding going to ND. I would imagine that many programs are doing this considering all of the talk about Charlie Weis.
Alex Smiths teleconference has been canceled now. “There will be no press conference today,” Lakota West coach Larry Cox said in an e-mail. “Alex is not ready to announce at this time. This is all the information we have.”
What is up with this kid?

I have a couple friends, one who has a stepson on the Moeller team, and they went to every Moeller game this year and they dont think he will ever see the field at ND(performance)I cant imagine him playing at florida either,He also said he really liked UC but more or less they kind of stoped recruiting him.

I dont think he would see the field at any big time school - i saw him play 3 times this year and he looks to be a mac quarterback at best. if he was an elite 4 star qb, he'd put up big numbers like his peers are doing - or at least complete a high percent of his passes and have a high TD - INT ratio. He wouldnt have even been the starting Qb if his jv competition didnt quit and just focus on baseball.

I've seen Hendrix a lot since he's been at Moeller. I dont get it at all. In the three games I saw of him this year he was below 50% completions in every game. I really dont see him being a QB in college. Definitely not at Notre Dame, Florida wherever....but the kicker is I dont really see him excelling at any other position either...He's not a great athlete by any stretch. I really think this is Rob Schoenhoft part II.
Just now catching up with this situation...but do you think the coaching staff told Alex they may not be around next season so he quickly changed his mind? Or is it a situation where UC has another kid they want more than Alex and just told him to hurry up, hoping he would de-commit?
I think they were sick of his waddling back and forth and wanted a final decision so they could go in another direction with his scholarship.

Regardless of what Alex Smith thinks, it you commit to a program, then keep visiting other schools and have to schedule a press conference to announce your decision, you have de-committed. The question now is if he re-commits.

All I know is he was suspended and did not play in his final high school game against Anderson and that his mother has been parading him around the country as some elite recruit, which is simply isn't.

I think Hendrix just benefits from a terrible crop of qb's across the board this year, in terms of his ranking. i agree with the schoenhoft comparions.
I'd definitely agree with you on that. This is definitely a down year for QB prospects on a national level.
Who are the Moeller backup quarterbacks for anyone with knowledge? And who is the kid who focused on baseball?
The kid who decided to focus on just baseball was Cisper? or something like that. Any big time Moe people in here that can confirm that?
Let's try this again...

Lakota West senior TE Alex Smith will announce his college choice at 11 a.m. Tuesday in a media conference call.
The finalists are UC, Wisconsin, North Carolina and Kentucky, according to the Lakota West athletic department.
Wonder how Kentucky made that list so suddenly...... (sarcasm)

I think you're right. UNC has made a stron push into recruiting Ohio and especially SW Ohio, they were close to getting Spencer Ware.
