Anderson 41, Middletown 20 (F)
Posted by tramstetter November 14th, 2009, 4:51 pm

After nearly three quarters of back-and-forth football, Kyle Slater and the Anderson offense simply exerted their will on the Middletown defense for the final 13 minutes of a 41-20 Redskins win Saturday afternoon in a Region 4 semifinal at Nippert Stadium.

Anderson will play the winner of Saturday night’s game between No. 1 St. Xavier and No. 4 Elder.

The third-seeded Redskins got 250 yards on 36 carries from Slater, who buried the Middies with four touchdown runs. The final two finished off seventh-seeded Middletown.

Slater dove over the line of scrimmage for a 2-yard touchdown with 1:05 to play in the third to erase a 20-19 Middletown lead. Senior quarterback Brandon Bornhauser ran the two-point conversion for a 27-20 Anderson lead.

After a three-and-out by the Middies, Slater capped another drive with a 29-yard touchdown run to give the Redskins some breathing room. Middletown never seriously challenged again.

Bornhauser added a 16-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Bornhauser finished the game with 130 yards on 23 carries.
Anderson led 19-14 at halftime, but the Middies took a 20-19 third-quarter lead when senior Jerry Gates returned a punt 59 yards for a touchdown with 6:10 to play in the third. The two-point conversion was no good.

The Redskins answered immediately with a 12-play, 79-yard drive and got Slater’s third touchdown to retake the lead for good.
The teams traded the lead in the first half and the Redskins started the scoring early.

Slater capped a game-opening 74-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run around the right side. The two-point conversion was no good. Slater had 42 yards on seven carries and Bornhauser had 28 on three carries during the drive.

The Middies answered on their first drive when Gates scored on a 2-yard run to give Middletown a 7-6 lead with 3:46 to play in the first quarter. The play capped a 10-play, 70-yard drive.

After a three-and-out by Anderson and a long drive by Middletown that stalled at the redskins 15, Slater capped a nine-play, 85-yard drive with a 2-yard TD run to give Anderson a 12-7 with 7:10 to play in the first half. The two-point run failed again. Slater also had a 31-yard run during the drive that started after Anderson held on 4th and 10 from its own 15 early in the second quarter.

The Middies took the lead again in the second quarter when Zach Edwards hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Watkins on 4th and 12 play to give the Middies a 14-12 lead with 2:44 to play in the first half. The play capped an 11-play, 45-yard drive that included two fourth-down conversions inside Anderson territory.

Anderson then went on a 12-play, 76-yard drive to take the lead into the locker room.

Impressive W for Anderson.
Not too shabby for a D-II school that got bumped to D-I with no heads up.

Another massive game from Slater. The kid plays harder than anyone I've seen this year, has some of the gaudiest stats in the area and has zero offers. If he gets his head on straight and gets his grades in order, somebody is going to roll the dice with a preferred walk on offer that could potentially pay huge divedends.
I am very impressed with Anderson. I thought they were a product of a very soft schedule. I expected them to beat west and had stated so, but thought Middletown would beat them. I think they have a great chance to beat Elder (though I consider Elder the favorite).

Slater has very good size and from what I have seen decent speed... so I am thinking the problems for him must be very bad. He doesnt even have a MAC offer at this point.

Yeah it is pretty bad from what I understand. Glen Este actually suspended him from football for an entire year, that is why he transferred to Anderson.

Very good player but I dont think anyone, even the MAC schools are going to take the risk on him.

He looked great in the Middletown game but Middletown was not prepared at all. I think they felt like they could just show up and walk away with an easy win. The Moeller win clearly gave them the big head.
Some of his coaches and 2 starters on offense were at our tailgate on Friday. Its not as bad as people think. Grades might be an issue, though.

Also....kid has only played in 10 games and has tallied 29 total TD's and could break 2000 yards rushing on the season if they advance (he sits at around 1700 yards through 10 games). Unbelievable stats.

Grade issues usually wont keep the MAC away (see all the offers Eastern Michigan gives), he doesnt have any offers from what I hear (not even Eastern Kentucky). Take a gander at the EKU roster sometime and you'll find a lot of Cincinnati academic risk players.

Whatever the reason it's a shame, he has skills.
He has a bunch of schools that are in wait and see mode. After having 500+ yards rushing in the first two rounds of the playoffs, if he has another big game against Elder, the waiting game will end. But like I said, he has some heavy lifting to do in the classroom.
Can Anderson beat Elder?

All things being equal, the seasoned football observer would say Elder is the favorite over Anderson in Saturday’s Division I regional football final (7 p.m. at UC).

Elder and its GCL South pedigree, against Anderson of the Fort Ancient Valley Conference. In the past that has meant an Elder win. Elder beat Anderson 24-6 in the 1996 playoffs, and 28-7 in the 2003 playoffs (both first-round games). Those are the schools’ only previous football meetings.

This year, Anderson is 12-0 and Elder is 9-2. For those who compare scores, Anderson just drilled Middletown (41-20) … which had just drilled Moeller (45-10) … which drilled Elder (35-13) during the regular season. Therefore Anderson has a real chance, right?

Well …

Elder is in much better shape than when it played Moeller. Most notably, WR Tim O’Conner is back from his broken wrist. O’Conner caught what proved to be the decisive TD pass in last Saturday’s 17-14 win over St. Xavier.

Yet, Anderson is hot. RB Kyle Slater is just a superb high school back, and the Redskins raised eyebrows by scoring 41 on a previously stout Middletown defense.

“We know we’ve got a tough one (this week),” Elder coach Doug Ramsey said.

Anderson coach Jeff Giesting: “This region has been so tough. Elder is a great team, and we’re going to work really hard this week.”

We will talk more to the coaches and players as the week goes along, and we plan to publish a longer pre-game story in Friday’s paper.

For now – what do you think?

As a guy who is friends with coaches, knows several players, and catches about 5 Anderson games a year, I just don't see much of a chance of Anderson beating Elder. Anderson's lines are just too small.

I think it will be a good game, but Elder is a diiferent team with O'Conner in the game. He commands a double team which opens things up for Welch and the other wideouts. Plus, Coffaro is playing great right now at RB. I'm going with Elder by 2 td's in this one..Shocker, right?
