Any Griz fan knows the team has its problems BUT it can mostly be blamed on the front office. Drafts have been FOR THE MOST PART a failed attempt by management. This is what we could have had..

2005: Hakim Warrick

Monta Ellis
Lou Williams
Jason Maxiell
Andray Blatche

2006: Rudy Gay* Kyle Lowry

Daniel Gibson
Paul Millsap
Leon Powe

2007: Mike Conley Jr.

Thaddeus Young
Rodney Stuckey
Jeff Green

2008: Mayo*, Darell Arthur

GOOD DRAFT^ (CDR, DeAndre Jordan)

2009: 1) Thabeet, 2) Carroll, 3) Young

1) Tyreke Evans, Brandon Jennings, James Harden

2) DeJaun Summers
3) DeJaun Blair

TEAM: coulda been*

PG- Monta Ellis
SG- OJ Mayo
SF- Rudy Gay
PF- Zach Randolph
C- Mar Gasol

PG- Brandon Jennings
PF- Paul Millsap
SG- Thaddeus Young
SF- Chris Douglas-Roberts
SF- DeJaun Summers
PF- Dejaun Blair
To be honest, I don't really have a problem with Carroll and Young being drafted where they were. I would have been nice to have blair I'll admit. What I have a problem is Thabeet. We clearly could have used the services of Jennings instead of Thabeet.

Wow. So you would have actually made worse draft picks?

01-wingedeagle
please explain how this is worse?
Please explain how it's not.
I guess it would have been nice for the Griz to have a few years of NBA experience to judge players before they drafted. Overall we haven't drafted that poorly. Hak went 19th and Monta went 40th, it's not fair to swap those picks. Lowry was the best pick for that spot in the first round of that weak draft and once again Milsap went 24 spots after Lowry. In 07 we needed a PG so we took Conley. 08 we drafted well with Mayo. This year is the only year I have a big problem with so I don't really know what you're complaining about.

Your are correct sir! With the exception of Milsap, I think for the most part the grizz have done the right thing and it is too soon to judge on the last couple years. I think the real problem has not been drafting but how our front office has handled trades, free agents and renewing existing contracts. The grizz need a boost to the system. Someone who will come in here and get the franchise and the fans pumped full of winning energy. I don't think we are too far away on talent. We just need that extra something that the winning teams have. If I was in charge I would get rid of everyone in the front office next year and rebuild completely. Then you have to go spend some of the salary cap space next year. If you can get everyone around the team to believe than maybe the team ( with a few additions) will start to believe too.
The Grizz drafted just fine until this year. No reason to get on them about their draft decisions.

The Grizz did not draft Mayo. He was a draft day trade with Minny for Kevin Love. Also included was Mike Miller, Brian Cardinal, Jason Collins from the Grizzlies for Antoine Walker, Marko Jaric, and Greg Buckner.

As for Conley, he was the right pick. Even looking back. The Grizz had the worst record in the NBA that year but Atlanta, Seattle and Portland defied odds and Memphis lost out on Horton, Durant and Oden.

Conley was the only pick at 4. Green was a 6'9 pf/sf and Memphis already had Pau and Rudy. Memphis would have been laughed at if they picked Thad (his stock fell) or Stuckey.
Truth be known, most drafts only produce only a handful of decent players each year.
This post was mostly just for fun. The Griz have more problems then the draft Im certain. Im just saying the players I picked are better but obviously hindsight is 20/20. I agree with Childers about each draft has maybe 3-5 players that will be stars...we seem to always get one pick after those stars are taken ha. When LeBron, Melo, DWade, and Bosh were drafted we had traded the 2 pick to DET in a previous year. I have no doubt we would have drafted Darko also if we had the pick ha.
BUT In 2003 we took Marcus Banks 13 over David West at 18..stuff like that is what makes me blame the draft a little.

The biggest miss was when we drafted Drew Gooden ahead of Amare i think that was the same year

hindsight is 20-20. nobody ever thought Amare would turn out to be this good!
I think it is almost impossible to pick who is going to be the guys who really make it outside of 2-3 in every draft. You think Portland would take Greg Oden today over Durant again? Kobe Bryant, Stoudemire, Dwight Howard, and others were picked at #9 or lower. A bunch of guys who were picked before them are out of the league. It is so hard to judge that. I am ok with the drafts and the Thabeet experiment will take a few years to play out. Not sure I would have changed too many of those picks. Dejuan Blair, maybe, but Carroll and Young will be fine and Blair will be a solid player for many years.
Howard was #1 overall.

David West didn't do anything his first two years in the league. It wasn't until his third year that he began producing.

True. It does seem to me that the Grizzlies seem to automatically exclude certain players because they don't meet the proper specs. Take Millsap, I thought for sure that he would at least be a good rebounder in the NBA. The Grizz and other teams passed on him because he was small for a PF. CDR was also not considered because he wasn't athletic of big enough. The need to step outside the box sometimes.

yup...my bad, but Josh Howard wasn't - maybe that is who I was thinking of, but he isn't as well thought of these days..
