Also why exhibition games are not a good idea when you can accomplish more as a coach with a closed scrimmage against a Division I squad.

Do you think Syracuse would rather have not played this non D-I?

It was already heading in that direction anyway. It seems that more and more coaches are opting for two scrimmages and no exhibition games. Take Joe Foley for instance- one scrimmage at home against Memphis and one on the road against Oral Roberts. Richmond did one on the road at NC State and one at home against ECU. It helps the teams learn more as they can work on specific situations, etc.
