"Whittington, though slender at this point in his career, has far better natural offensive skill than Lawson, and certainly more than Conteh."
I thought Conteh looked rock solid at the Breakfast games. We need some meat in the middle. We played Detroit soft last year. I thought we were going to get back to playing Broncos basketball? Conteh plays Broncos basketball. I loved the play where he sent Brown's shot and body into the cheap seats. There were way too many uncontested shots last year. Conteh needs to play and Whittington needs a year to bulk up.
"Losing out on center Jordan Threloff was a blow."
And why did we loose Threloff? In my opinion it is because everyone and their mother now has a web site on recruiting. Coaches can't find any diamonds in the rough anymore because if someone shows promise in 3rd grade they start showing up on some recruiting web site's radar. And if it's not the recruiting web sites then it's the AAU coaches inflating the players with so much BS that even the MAC recruits come out of AAU thinking they will be playing at most one year of college ball before the jump to the pros. The bottom line is that WMU isn't going to get any top tier players. We get the leftovers after the name schools are finished picking things over. Players who fall to MAC level have significant flaws and with luck and a crap load of hard work coaches can correct the flaws in a year or two or three and maybe get some value from that recruit in his last year or two. There are no magic pills for the second tier of D1 schools. The only way they have any success is if they have great team chemistry with lesser quality players much like the 1975-76, the 91-92, 97-98, 03-04, and the 07-08 Broncos had. How many NBA all-stars came out of those teams?
"Coming up with that five doesn't take a whole lot of inside info -- other than to know that Douglas had "separated himself" from other point guards, Steve Hawkins said, after the first week of practice."
Well with 3 turnovers and 2 points in 32 minutes he didn't seperate himself much at the Breakfast with the Broncos.
"If that's being a homer, so what."
Yeah why should the media be objective? If they are then they will lose access to all that quality inside info. And you wonder why the Gazette is having trouble staying afloat. It's gone from an objective news source to something resembling the National Enquirer. You would think every sleasy lawyer in town would be lining up for advertising space right next to the staple for the Gazette's sports section, the Deja Vue ads.
Quote:Yeah why should the media be objective? If they are then they will lose access to all that quality inside info
NO KIDDING!
They (WMU) need the media, and no one will lose access, in that they'll let you cover the media the same way every other journalist can. Media day, press conferences, game day media access.
Couch has developed a trust with Cubit and Hawkins that allows him to write things that others couldn't. It's the stuff that many who suffered through Jack Moss truly appreciate. And you want him to jeopardize that..... for what? So he will print something like "This is a horrible recruiting class and Hawkins isn't getting it done."
Apparently, with the Bronco faithful you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.
As for Desertbronco's carping, that's just someone who likes to be the center of the universe. He'd argue day was night if he thought it would get him a point on his message board reputation.

Coming from you, THAT'S hilarious.
So either we have Jack Moss, "I love UM style of reporting" or nothing at all? Objectivity isn't in the mix? Pfffft. I call bs on that set of choices. Sorry.
Quote:So either we have Jack Moss, "I love UM style of reporting" or nothing at all?
Seems to me you've already put Couch in that category.
I have no doubt that if he concludes his audience doesn't like his coverage of WMU, then he'll start covering local high school sports, or for that matter he'll head to UM, MSU, ND. I think we all know that there's a bigger audience for the big 3, than for WMU.
It wasn't that long ago that the Gazette didn't send a reporter on WMU road games, just used an AP release. I'm sure the editor of the Gazette wouldn't mind returning to those days. Certainly would improve his bottom line.
Be careful what you wish for.
But really,
none of this is about how you actually feel. This is about a self-absorbed douche who likes to stir the pot with those he dislikes, while sucking up to others in the hope of cultivating their support. Pretty much how you define a sycophant.
If it's news, it gets assigned coverage, especially if there is an audience for it, don't get so self absorbed that you (or the guy you channel, GC) make the news.
It's a very common event with media types, they begin to think that if they don't cover the story, then it just isn't so. That's bassakwards.
Quote:This is about a self-absorbed douche who likes to stir the pot with those he dislikes, while sucking up to others in the hope of cultivating their support. Pretty much how you define a sycophant.
If that were the case, I'd start my own web site with media credentials and all, and attack anyone on other sites who dare offer up an opinion or observation that doesn't agree with my own, including coaching decisions, recruiting strategy and opinions about where arenas would be built and funded. I'd tell them that their opinion doesn't count as much as mine because "I'm closer to the program" and mock them for not knowing (Insert hero of the day here) shoe size and sock color.
I haven't.
BTW, I didn't start this thread if you take a look. I just agreed, but since you're so frosted at me for being audacious enough to (gasp) question some of the prognostications made by you during the last four years after not saying a thing all this time, and doubting the ones you made this year, you attack me.
Nothing new there. It's that d@mn DB, he's the reason I'm mad!!!

Couch quote
Quote:Players who fall to MAC level have significant flaws
Humm......I am waiting to hear his opinion of Nate Hutcheson's "significant flaws". Hutcheson could be in the starting lineup before D.Ward.
Couch is a real asset to us WMU fans. WMU was diregarded by the Gazette during the Moss days. No doubt. I can recall being frosted to pick up the Sunday Gazeete and see UM, or sometimes MSU on the front of the sports page and WMU on page 3 or worse. Now, today we have front page and comprehensive coverage throughout the week. I am grateful for Graham's energy toward WMU.
Is Graham a bit of a homer, yup, I'd say so. Media objectivity is a myth anyhow. Was Moss objective about UM? No. Any newspaper that endorses a political candidate is hardly objective, no media objectivity there, that's for sure. Each one is writing out of his or her bias, history, votiing record. personal and political agenda, and all of that.
Let's appreciate Graham for what he does. It's better than we've ever had. I'd hate to lose it.

One scrimmage is more important than a week of practice to make that determination?
A "significant flaw" does not have to be any one thing like poor outside shooting, or not tall enough. it could just be that the overall level isn't quite were higher level teams want it. Also a flaw for one coach may be exactly what another is looking for. With Hutcheson, he was a 6-2 point guard three years ago, was he D1 material then? Many coaches may have written him off and not looked back when the growth spurt hit.

I don't contend I provide news. In fact I don't even try. I provide a niche that the conventional media generally can't cover (recruiting). Why you have a problem with that is a mystery considering you don't even have access to it.
But again, none of your concerns are truly about mine or Couch's point of view. You could care less about the slant of the coverage. This is totally about you trying to stir the pot, and create a problem where none exists. This is about your self-absorbed need to engage me in an argument. Nothing more.

If that were true, it would be nothing different than how you rolled around these boards for years. However, it's not...in this case. The recruiting that you have such insider information to doesn't even interest me. I am over the hype then the subsequent whining when the hype doesn't quite live up to the expectations that you project. If it happens in one year it might be an accident, two years is suspect, the last four years, it's a pattern.
You hype them up, if they don't pan out, you whine and b!tch like a stuck pig about reasons that I've outlined clearly in other discussions/posts/threads.
Quit throwing up a squid screen because you have been called out on your pattern. It really is that simple.

You mean like this pattern?

Goes back to the political jousts. Let it go, you'll be much happier

So I agree with Rolex's assessment about
GRAHM COUCH by saying NO KIDDING, your person that you channel and apparently have a man crush on, and that turns me into a person that just wants to engage you into an argument?
You have a weird take on that one pal, that's really a stretch.
wow, dip and db, you two are like some old married couple that just fights to fight, how intimate and quaint. you really do care for each other, very sweet. 22 years of marriage speaking here.
When we take the Harley out, he rides on the back.

They have these spats couple times a year, mostly to clear the air.

I was wondering about that, and more.........
Go Browns! (and take the Indians with you)

It's very dear.
Based on what I saw at the Breakfast with the Broncos I don't see any of the freshman playing regularly because none of them looked like they knew how to play Broncos defense and as we have heard Coach Hawkins say 1,000's of times, if you can't play defense they you can't play. So eliminate all the freshman and what do you have left? There's your rotation unless, of course, Hawkins is going to do a 180 on his Broncos defense is the core to winning the MAC philosophy.

You mean the thing where you are late rotating around the perimieter as the opposition drains an open 3?
c'mon, can we get real here.
5 days of team practice under their belt and you expect the freshman to be executing the "Bronco Defense" flawlessly?
Let's see if they find their groove a little better vs. K College this Saturday at 2:00.
I have zero expectations for this basketball team. And thats the way to go.
One way to think about it.
3 starters back, Kool for the first time in his career at WMU playing effortlessly like his injury is finally healed, Hutch looking like a steal, Brown starting to click, D Ward looking like a monster albeit with a cracked bone, hmmmm.
I'm thinking they will hold their own.
LaMarcus would have made me feel optimistic. As it stands, I'm kind of with Stampede. Show me.
Quote:LaMarcus would have made me feel optimistic.
I am glad he is gone...quitter!
With that said, I think we will have a real fine season.

I forgot to add...
But either way we are winners because we have no Affiliation with Central Michigan Univeristy, the new Univisity of Phoenix! Dipolma for a dime anyone?

LOL! I hope WMU
NEVER goes that route!! Cheapens the degree if anyone who can breath hot air and fog a mirror in rural West Virginia can get the same one.
D@mn Memphis, I went to bump your rating after that post but found it was already maxed out from me.
