Just wondering who everyone else would like to see play qb the rest of the season. My vote is for Will
Yep, I think Will would give us a GREAT chance to beat UTEP! 03-wink
STEELE
Will!!!!!!
Me
I want the same qb in the game that i have screaming for for the last 3 weeks. He should have started vs utmartin. I don't care what tw says about injuries to steele and why he chose bass. It was the wrong call. Pitts and smith have been available and have run the ball well, though i admit not like steele. Will is the better passer and kept the defense honest tonight which opened up the running game. The qb didn't run which gives the running backs more attempts. The qb instead played a great game considering he hasn't really played alot lately.

Will hudgens made me proud. I knew he gave us the best chance of winning. If will starts since utmartin and we stop running the qb all the time, i truly believe we win 3 of the last 4 even with steele hurt.

I'm not going to say i told you so and bring this thread back up but this is what i was screaming last week. Tiger edwards and memphisfan95 didn't seem to believe me. Do you guys believe me now?
http://ncaabbs.com/showthread.php?tid=390948

Will is not our savior. He is just the best qb to give us a chance to win. He spreads the field with his ability to pass down field.

Now i heard tw say like he was not 100% positive if will would still start the next game. He would be a total dumba$$ if he goes back to bass.

I have to credit the coaching staff tonight. It wasn't perfect, but they did a somewhat better job of having the team prepared to play. At least for this game, they didn't get totally outcoached. I especially want to thank them for handing the ball off to a running back and stop running the qb and for starting will hudgens.
Where there is a Will, there is a way.
Based on what I've seen so far this, and tonight in person, Will should have been the starter from day one.
Difficult to say at this point. Will had a pretty good night against a pretty lousy defensive team, much like he did two years ago against Marshall. After that, he came out the very next game against MTSU and had a lousy game and lost his job to Hankins for the rest of the season. Considering that we will probably be the underdog in 5 out of our last 6 games, I'd go with Tyler Bass because he's a sophomore and we'll need him to get in lots of reps to build for next season.
Will H. should probably start until Tyler is back 100% healthy.
Like Will's decision making and arm, like Tylers wheels.
But the team's body lanuage seems to give the nod to Will I will have to say.
Defensively, UTEP came into the game dead last in C-USA in total defense allowing 494.4 yards per game. The Tigers had 485. Of those 494.4 yards per game, UTEP averaged giving up 289.6 passing yards per game. Tonight, Will had 215. UTEP gave up 204.8 yards rushing per game. Tonight, Steele had 240.

Tonight's game belonged to Steele not Hudgens.

Next week, we play at Southern Mississippi. They have the #1 pass defense in C-USA allowing only 190.8 yards per game. No matter who we put out on the field next week, the Tigers will probably struggle at QB.
Brett Farve, definitely.

I'd take him with Steve Matthews and Martin Hankins as backups.

Flip Steve for Danny.
You go with the guy who just won.
Platoon it. Throwing deep, put in Will. Running, put in Tyler. Fade or a touch pass, Brett Toney. Arkelon, he can hold the clipboard.
institute the bullpen qb system
If part of the QB's job is to get the ball to the playmakers, then go with Will. It's great to see Carlos and Duke active in the offense, along with Steele.

Great choice! I believe he was 13-1 in playoff games in his career.
It's Will's to lose...
doesn't Theisman live in Memphis? that leg's had time to heal up!

Go Tigers!!!
Drew
A platoon system could well be implemented if and when Bass recovers from his shoulder injury.

But there is no argument the team looked BETTER on offense with Hudgens in there. Maturity, leadership, and knowledge of the offense helps. It definitely helped to have Steele back and able to carry the ball. A strong running game is fundamental.

Bottm line is Hudgens is the QB until Bass is medically cleared.
I think Will has won the chance to start next weekend.

But one thing I wonder, after thinking about it, is: Is our "system" a little tough on QBs? It may be hard for a two-year guy to come in and get a real grasp for the way it works in two years. I know Hankins was able to get through his first year and really improved in his second year working in it. And since Will has been around the system for 5+ years, maybe it just comes a little easier to him than the others.

With that said, the more reps we can get Bass (and keep him here and healthy) maybe the better he will become as he goes along in the years to come. I think Hall is a little overwhelmed still, and he was better last year (while he was healthy) against some of the lesser defenses we faced in our dumbed-down schedule. With the upgrade to the schedule (and their better defenses) that we are facing this year, I think that explains why he is struggling.

But what do I know - I am just a fan. And a dang happy one that we won last night.

GoTigers!

Was that meant to be prophetic?
At this point, who cares who starts? This season is over.

Find the youngest QB on the team and start him for the rest of the season regardless of whether we win or lose. Get some reps in for next year.
Brett Toney is UNDEFEATED.... why not give him a shot till he at least loses a game ...
let Wil finish the season and hoprfully next spring there'll be a hell of a battle between Bass,Smith,And Gilchrist
Why would you let a senior QB finish the season when the season is already down the tubes?

Start someone who'll return for next year. No reason to start next season with very little experience at the QB position. We'll be weak enough without Calhoun and Steele. No need to make it worse by starting out with a group of relatively inexperienced QBs.

Have you ever played football in your life? I talked to a few friends at CBHS that laughed at the suggestion after they asked....who?

And that's relevant how? You don't have to play football to know that the team is 2-5, and probably headed for no better than a 4-8 season.

But hey, keep up that unfounded optimism. That and $4 will buy you a cup of coffee.
When will anyone accept the reality that a football game is not a 7 on 7 drill and that the Offensive Line, if OFFENSIVE, makes it difficult for qbs to perform.

We constantly hear that we "have so many talented JUCOS and transfers" (and that is a topic for another day - Winning Football w/JUCOS) -- but you never hear anyone "braggin on" the "talent" of the OL.

Maybe because he has earned the right to some PT for sticking around the program when he didn't have to. Like you say, the season's down the tubes anyway. Right? Why not start Will every game, and change to B. Toney for every second half? If either one of them stinks it up too bad, you can always put in Hall. I would NOT take the redshirt off of Gilcrest.
At this point, I see no problem with letting Will and Hall share time at the position.
Will did ok. No one else of the u of m's team gives them the best chance to win. I didn't realize anyone else on the bench was considered "the future" unless you're talking about toney??? Surely, you don't want to take the redshirt off gilchrist. Hall was benched and bass is hurt. If hudgens is realized to be the starter sooner, we could have at least won one more game this year. Our offense moves better with Will and tonight they had 425 total (255 passing and 170 rushing) which is 65 more yards than what usm had in total offense. Usm was just better than us tonight, that's all, especially on the defensive side. They gave up big plays but not touchdowns. We gave up big plays and touchdowns. Our special teams just gave up.
RC Johnson....that way he can get KTFO'd and be forced to resign due to severe head trauma

I think Tommy should play QB. Put it all on him.
Why not go ahead and alert the NCAA we will forfeit the rest of the season so we can play Cannon Smith. Or better yet just dress him as one of the walkons and hide him from the press after the game. Say he is some kind of autistic savant who freaks without his helmet on.

I guess having a 30 year old QB does have it's advantages. Will does throw some pretty passes into the stands or straight to a WR's feet.

hell thats easy...fire the entire staff except for Ric Mallory b/c he deserves to keep his job as o-line coach b/c he's the best coach on staff....burn every play clay helton ever installed, burn all the playbooks and everything that has his stain on it around the tiger program...then once this season is over you go and you find a young coach who is ready to build this program and get it heading in the right direction....you MUST recruit the city of Memphis better then West has...which won't be hard since TW never got any of the best recruits to stay home and play...which honestly why should they when they know that this program is doo doo with the current staff....get young coach = new life in the program = more buzz = more recruits = more victories = more money! but for right now you gotta play Hudgens and hope that Clay Helton walks into the football offices and quits...otherwise get used to watching draw, swing passes, and wr screen...b/c thats Clay Helton's whole offense, and it's embarrassing to watch...

I think he did moron. He just said that it's the play calling. It's not the athletes and new facilities aren't going to help this season. Throw the ball down the field and try and pass the ball on 1st down instead of going into the Rip Scherer offense of run on 1st, run on 2nd, pass on 3rd and then punt. I'm glad somebody on this board agrees with me about Hudgens and has also called out TigerTommy. He would have probably run the same offensive plays last night as Helton did. Let me give you guys some tips about football since people like TigerTommy have no idea: when a defense runs a cover 4 like Southern Miss did last night, the offense has the ability to have their best receivers on the outside going 1 on 1 against the corner. Why Helton can't see this and send Duke and Carlos on a 9 route down the sideline I will never know. TigerTommy I'll have to explain a 9 route later to you. Or when a defense runs a cover 2 like Southern Miss did also last night, you can beat people by throwing the ball across the middle or run at least 3 receivers on a vertical route. The 2 safeties have to pick their poison at that point and someone will be open. We have to keep Steele running the ball at any costs, which means we have to keep the defense honest. Running screens when a defense is set up for that is plain dumb. A draw doesn't always work on 3rd and long when the defense has already seen that throughout the night. The resolution is simple, find a way to make the defense play man on either Carlos or Duke. They can beat C-USA defenders 1 on 1 anyday of the week. If that means running them in motion at some point or lining them up on both sides on a more regular basis then so be it. If the defense wants to double these guys, the Farr or another receiver will be wide open across the middle. Is there anyone on here who understands this besides me? TigerTommy hand down because I know you don't. You should though since I'm sure all you have done the past 6 years of your life is play Madden or NCAA football throughout the week while the rest of us were playing the real thing. These band geeks are just getting worse and worse I tell ya.

you are right...the recruiting staff should be shot..... but you just further my point of how little you know about football if you don't think he is our best option right now.....i don't care if you have watched him since high school, in fact you should be on here arguing with idiots like you that Hudgens is our man... after all he is the only QB TO BEAT A DIV.1 TEAM THIS YEAR........not to mention he is our only deep threat quarterback....and reliable leader...and smart....so tigertommy once again you prove to everyone on this blog that you are an idiot that knows nothing about the game of football or how is should be played....AND THAT'S SAD SINCE YOU'VE BEEN "WATCHING IT" FOR SO LONG.... do us all a favor and throw your computer out your window
