This is a new one. Who knows, even though the odds are 1000-1 that you could land a utile player this way, it could happen, right? Does there have to be an open roster position, or can you add a walk on and just not dress them until needed, if ever?
Smaller sports than hockey have held open tryouts. A couple years back the gymnastics team had tryouts, so it does happen. And, I'll agree with TexasBronco. It might be a 1,000-1 shot, but maybe that amazing player just pops up.
Would hate to see them draw off the Club team........maybe their best player??? hahaha
I know they've had a third string goalie pulled either off the club or campus once or twice.
I tried out for WMU baseball. It was a fun experience.

It's just to get bodies for them to beat up on in practice.

Football and basketball always hold open tryouts for walkons... we dont ridicule them for it.

These kids will never see the ice in the game the same way a walk on with football and basketball will never see any playing time.

Makes sense to me.

As I pointed out in my blog post, football and basketball are much different situations. This just doesn't happen in hockey, and for good reason.
I'm with you on that one Moe, D1 hockey is a little different proposition than walking on for football (I didn't make it to pads), baseball and the like.

However, in Michigan, there may be a couple of guys who either "retired" or chose not to go juniors/college that may be on campus, I had a friend who was that guy years ago, Ferris State's coach had a huge boner when his players came back and told coach he was on campus and enrolled.

To no avail, he was done with hockey and on an academic scholarship. Think Wes Devries in that case, very similar. So in the end, it could happen, but it would be a long shot to say the least and sounds like a reach.
Glendening (U of M) walked on and now has a scholarship. It can happen, it just usually happens with teams that kids actually want to play for.

What's your point? He was a recruited walk-on (common in college hockey), not an act of desperation from an open try-out.
And BTW, Chaney has finally been added to the roster wearing #6. So the tryouts are for a team that already has a 28 man roster (3 goalies, 8 defensemen, 17 forwards).
I guess I was trying to allude to the fact that its even hard to get playing time as a recruited walk on; open tryouts are a joke and would not make anything easier for the broncos.
Moe, wasn't Jason Redinuis from Mona Shores a walk on at WMU that went on to become team captain by his senior year. I know that I killed the spelling of his last name.

Always proud to be a Bronco.

Who cares if he was a walk-on? He didn't join the team in an open try-out from the general student population. There's a ginormous difference between a recruited walk-on (something every team has) and a walk-on from an open try-out (something no D1 hockey team does).
