Correction.
UAB Athletics was NOT around before Gene Bartow. And while he is not gone from this earth, he is gone from UAB and the athletic department has steadily declined since the day he retired. While UAB athletics will not disappear altogether, it will take another great man to come along to undo all the damage that has been done since Bartow retired as athletic director. Until that day, Gene Bartow is the face of UAB Athletics. He will always be that.
100 years from today when all of us are gone, and when someone tells the story of UAB Athletics, Gene Bartow will be a part of that story. No one else we know will be- not Watson Brown, not Mike Davis, not Neil Callaway, not Mike Anderson, not Murry Bartow. They will all be footnotes, but the story will still include Gene Bartow.
Coach Bartow is the face of UAB Athletics. No question about it. To say he is just a man to be admired and respected tells me you do not understand the magnitude of what he accomplished.
What a bizarre turn this thread has taken. I can't tell if this is the prize winner or the one that devolved into a debate over the semantics of corporate lingo.

Reading comprehension is your friend; see also bolded text above. When exactly did I "try to make one person the institution"?
Now if you mean the "institution" of Blazer Athletics, then I'll admit full guilt, but only after you take, and pass, Blazer Athletics History Remedial Class 001.
Actually, you did so take your own advice:
You Wrote:He is, in effect, UAB
What I said also applies to UAB athletics.
I won't even begin to get into this discussion, but to switch gears slightly.....I heard from Coach Bartow this week and he has had some good reports lately, even to the point that they have stopped his chemo. He is doing very well.
We haven't had a lot of good news around here lately, but this is about as good as it gets.
Please keep him in your prayers.

Actually it just means that I don't put people up on pedestals. My bad on when he came. I had forgotten about that, but just because the program declined after he left only means there had been some mistakes made by the administration. The point remains that UAB athletics will be around when he is gone, and I believe we will get back on the right track.
I suppose you don't consider George Washington to be the Father of our country then, either.
Gene Bartow is to UAB Athletics what George Washington is to the United States.

What's your point? Washington is gone, but I don't think he is the face of the country and he isn't what I think of when I think about the USA. I think about certain principles: freedom, justice, etc. Not a person.
My point has been made. If you don't get it yet, you won't.
Sorry, you can't make me believe a person is more than a person no matter how great he or she may be.

This thread is odd. It took an odd turn, and this seemingly random prediction of a UAB victory by a Southern Miss fan in the middle of the odd thread is even more odd!
What's going on here?

You don't understand why people are honored for important achievements?
Without George Washington any country we might have would likely look quite different. That's a pretty important impact on history worthy of lasting praise, and understanding.
Your precious principles ("freedom, justice, etc.??") don't mean anything if you don't know how they were achieved and at what price.
Without Gene Bartow you aren't even on this website. If UAB even had an athletics program, I can guarantee you in any event that we wouldn't be playing division 1 football.
Yes, genius, he is a human being. But one that we all hold in extremely high regard for his achievements on behalf of our school.
I'll hold the door for you while you go catch a clue.

I'm sorry, what's all this talk about George Jefferson and the discovery of basketball?

You don't do hero worship. Fine. Let the rest of us honor him without calling us out. It was your post shown below that started this whole thing.

Gene Bartow is a good man, and he did things that mattered during his career. One of those things was starting the UAB Athletic programs we here are fans of. Without Gene, no Blazer hoops, no Blazer football. Indeed, we might not even be called Blazers, since the nickname was voted on to name the basketball team he founded.
Is it hero worship to admire a man for his accomplishments, particularly when they were performed in an ethical and admirable way in a state where such things are seldom part of big time sports?

Why???? Anytime there is a disagreement, it goes to the smack board? An argument over the amount of respect due to Gene Bartow gets moved to the smack board?????. There was no name calling. No anger. Just a disagreement.
Shouldn't actual violations of the AUP, such as blasting assistant coaches be moved first.
*This is in no way questioning a moderator, which would be a horrible violation of the AUP. Just rhetorical questions.
Oh quit griping and let us run the board. Damn, you have to complain about everything. I support any mod's decision here.
Our defense sucks! Now the smack board is justified

I would just like to know why it was moved to the smack board. I pm'ed the moderator who moved it as required by the AUP, but it would seem if you want all questions taken to PM, then the questions would be answered.
Why was the thread moved? What policy was violated and what was the smack involved? simple questions.

If griping about the defense is the cause, there would not be many threads on the main board now.

Now answer your own question. Is all the threads griping about defense on the smack board?
The smack board is more than a smack board for us. It is a place we move threads not just smack, but threads that take a sudden turn we are afraid might get out of hand or when two people want to hold a bitch fest, or simply a place to move stupid threads.
Do we have to continue this exercise every time you disagree with something we do?
Quote:Moving threads to the smack board, locking, or deleting threads or posts will be done at the discretion of the moderators or admins. Loose enforcement of this AUP is at the SOLE discretion of the moderators of BlazerTalk.com.
One reason he may not have answered your PM is he has not been on since you PMed him. We do have lives and our world does not revolve around Memphisblazer.
We will move threads here when we think we need to regardless if you approve or not. If you do not like how we run this board feel free to leave. If you want your own board to moderate how you see fit then by all means go out and create one. Let our mods moderate this board.
I know you like to throw the AUP back at us Memphisblazer but the simple facts are it is a guideline. If we had followed it to the letter you would have been banned with BlazerSax long ago. Now go find something else to complain about.
