According to Goodman's blog on Fox, Jim Crews is supposedly leaving the job as Army's head coach for unknown reasons. Jim is the top assistant there and what's interesting is his son, Jeff (boy am I getting old) was hired as an assistant at Army last month. Unless they're dumping the whole staff (can't imagine that with practice starting in 3 weeks), I would assume Jim would be the natural hire having more than 10 years of head coaching experience at UALR and Charleston Southern

That should be the ideal job for Jim. It would fit his style of coaching. Very regimented. I hope he gets the job. He was always a very nice man. I'm sure he's improved as a coach through the years also.04-cheers

It is apparently now official that Jim Crews is out at Army. Here's a link to an update from the Middletown, NY newspaper.

Maybe our friend Jim Platt will get a shot for a year as the Head man at West Point, but who knows. The only thing that seems certain right now is that the deal is weird. Nobody, and I mean nobody including even West Point would chose to fire the head coach three weeks before practice begins. Especially a coach that's been around seven years. Something strange is going on up there.
Wasn't it Coach Platt that our players staged a boycott over? Anyone remember the details? Wasn't D. Fish here at the time? Maybe not.
It was. I think Fish was there but not sure. Not even sure I remember why the walkout took place. That sure was a day the Trojans dominated the news, though...

You are exactly right. Derek Fisher was a freshman or sophomore at the time, but was definitely here during the walk out. There is some really bad chemistry in a program when something like that happens.

Jim Platt, although a really nice guy, and a pretty good coach, was just not a good fit for our program. He was one of the best recruiters we ever had here, but overall it just didn't work. I do wish him well though as he was a fine friend and good neighbor to MJS.
I really enjoyed getting to know Coach Platt at the Mexico Chiquito lunches. I guess he was just too intense for the players. He really was a nice guy.

The best I can gather he was simply to "old school" with regard to rules and discipline for our players. When kids signed with Bobby Knight they knew what they were getting into. Many of our players had signed with Mike Newell and then got Jim Platt. Newell was certainly tough in practice, but I don't think he was that involved in what they did off the court with regard demeanor, style of dress, etc.

According to the article posted by Peter, it sounds as if either the assistant AD, who has only coached on the DIII level will take over, or another rumor says the women's coach may coach the team. It doesn't even hint that Platt will coach the team, other than mentioning that he was the coach here and at Charleston Southern.

I hadn't seen that article. Actually, my first thought was "Jim is out of a job". Then I thought because of the timing of the announcement and the fact that Jim is the top assistant, that he might get the job. Weird situation, whatever happens.

Here's a link to a story on ESPN.com that makes the situation up at West Point seem even more bizarre. Is it that they have fired the guy and won't comment, or that they are reconsidering an won't comment, or that they haven't pulled the trigger yet and won't comment? If there was no change afoot, I figure they would have already issued a statement. Odd goings on.

Obviously, I don't have a clue what's going on because no one else does. Maybe they are ditching the entire staff, for whatever reason. I do know Jim and Coach Crews have been friends forever. Jim would likely not take the job if he felt it was "stabbing Crews in the back". The fact that Jim's son, Jeff, was just added to the staff makes it even weirder. As you know, PTJR, getting DI assistant jobs is not that easy. Would hate that for Jim and Jeff, although Jim would likely land somewhere (although it probably is to late for the upcoming season).

Take a look at what was posted on Goodman's blog at 2:25 EST this afternoon about potential candidates. Really strange if the AD is fairly publicly shopping for coaches and hasn't officially let the present coach go. Unless Crews got caught doing something really bad, the AD's timing and handling of this thing really sucks. And if you think Fricke's situation was bad timing for the upcoming season, this is much, much worse for Jim and Jeff.
