Quote:Worst stadium: Legion Field, Birmingham, Ala. In Alabama, they call it the Gray Ol' Lady. I call it uglier than some of Birmingham's abandoned steel mills.

I mean... I know it's bad..but really the worst??
I bet he has never been to Birmingham.
I bet he's never been outside of Denver.
StunnerJR Wrote:I bet he's never been outside of Denver.

Good point.
Maybe he is wrong, but Legion field is still pretty bad.
I agree with him.

NOw that Louisville plays on campus instead of the municipal dump, Legion Field is the worst. It's MUCH worse than it was 10 years ago. Match the decaying stadium with the decaying neighborhood and the fact that there's not much game-day atmosphere in there with less than 20K in the stands, and Legion Field is the worst stadium I have ever seen.

Next-worse might be the Orange Bowl on a day when Miami has a bad crowd for a boring opponent.
Orange Bowl is pretty damn bad but LF is worse. I haven't been to Rice Stadium in many years so maybe a rIce fan can comment on it. L-Mac has been to both, maybe she can comment.
Ever been to Starkville or Oxford? While on the surface those places appear to have an old world charm, here is what's behind that charm........

Oxford: The seats are numbered wrong or not at all, by the time a visitor determines where they are supposed to sit, it's time to go to the consession stand for a Coke. At that consession stand, they will probably be pouring the Coke out of a two liter bottle instead of using a fountain. It only adds to the charm of the place when you're hit with whiskey bottles being thrown at visiting fans, but that's another stadium catagory to rate.(the fountain thing may be fixed by now)

Starkville: The worst men's restroom in modern football history. There is a concrete trench around a 20 X 20 block building. If you're not careful you could fall in and not be seen again until you hit Natchez. Anyone else been there to confirm?

While Legion is old, I'll go to Legion before Vaught Hemmingway or Scott Field again. The most amazing thing that I notice in Legion Field is the average age of person working in that facility has to be 70+. Those are some of the oldest working folks I've ever encountered, but they do smile and say "thank you".
IMHO Scott field is OK, a little better than Legion field, but I do hate the bottomless pits. I havn't the oppertunity to go inside Vaught-Hemmingway but it certainly looks a lot nicer on the outside. What you described just seems to be a people-problem.
yes, I'd have to say Legion Field probably is the worst stadium in America, and possibly Mexico, too.

How do you know? have you been to every stadium in MEXICO?!?!?!?

I dropped 'ol John a note:

John,
Caught your article on this football season and I noticed your reference to Legion Field in Birmingham as being "The Worst Stadium" in America. I was just wondering when you had the opportunity to vist the Old Grey Lady this season? While I will agree that Legion Field has seen better days and that there are nicer stadiums around, I must say that calling Legion Field "The Worst" is a stretch at best. You state that it is worse than some of the city's abandoned steel mills. Just what abandoned steel mills are you referring to? The only abandoned steel mill in Birmingham still standing is the Histroric Sloss Furnace that is well taken care of and is a first class museum. Next time you find yourself in Birmingham please take a closer look around and you just might find that things are not as bad as discribed in some out of town newspapers.

If you're really going to send it, please use your spell-checker first. We Southerners have too many stereotypes going against us as it is.
I have an "Histroric" spell checker that is on a 360K floppy! Works great! ;-)

i don't think you've really been to scott field if you say its worse then legion, yes its rather small, but its head and shoulders nicer than legion field was even 20 years ago. i went there this past year and thought it was a nice little stadium, nothing spectacular, but something uab might should model their stadium after.
M$U has a nice stadium.
just don't ever sit in the upper deck at starkville unless you like mountain climbing, and make sure you leave for the climb 30 minutes prior to gametime or you'll miss kickoff...its a long walk up there.

Well I don't know much about the seating, but the field itself is one of the best natural grass fields I've seen. Very well kept.
Starkpatch is a flippin dump as Old Tiger said. Can't say I've meen to VHS in Oxford.
I haven't been to Scott Field in years, but the men's rooms were just as described.

You are standing shoulder to shoulder with about twenty other guys, peeing into a trough. Not pretty.

Yep, been to Scott field and Legion. Personally used the pig trough for a restroom. Something else that I thought was interesting was the chain link fence that they have running down the middle of the visitors side. Not sure that fence was still there the last time I was there. I assummed that was to keep the students away from the visitors. That's only required in "special" places for "special" people.
edit, not sure why I dignified someone named "crimsonation" with an answer.....my oversight, my mistake.
Quote:not sure why I dignified someone named "crimsonation" with an answer.....my oversight, my mistake.

We will forgive you. ;-) I have used the pig trough myself.

Lower level is not much better. They have a slip and slide for you to exit the stands. Not much fun to go to the rest room and slide down that thing in the rain.
Starkville is the worst

The visiting football team has to walk/run/stumble down a curved ramp to get to the field. The video board is worse than the old rear projection TV they have at the Benchwarmer in Huntsville. The slip and slide from the lower stands in the rain was no fun as we were trying exit. The concourse was narrow, there were open doors to the big trash hoppers, that didn't smell too good, and was a hazard to walk by from the slick floor. The only thing missing from the moat was alligators. NO parking within a mile of the stadium, so we HAD to take the shuttle from the research park. Food was OK, but I'm easy to feed. I saw the angle of the upper deck and was glad I didn't have to sit there. I'm not sure why the place has never been pressure washed except that maybe they think the gunk is holding it together. lmfao

And after all this, Southern Miss stole the plans, built and exact replica and USM thinks they got away with something. 01-wingedeagle
well i don't think it was that bad of a place, but i sat in the upper deck and only saw it and the ramp to the upper deck, so you could be right about the rest of the stadium, but the upper deck was alright except for the steep angle and 15 minute walk up. the parking there is bad too, but thats to be expected when there are more than 20,000 fans at a game at an on campus stadium. by the way, i did not go to the restroom in the stadium so i don't know anything about the trough you guys are talkin about. its not the best stadium, but how can uab fans even begin to talk about another stadium when you guys are still using the most run down POS stadium in the country? 01-wingedeagle
The bathrooms do suck, how many stadiums have bathrooms with like 20 urinals and 1 stall? ONE STALL!?!?!?

sax, if i have to 01-scout during a game, i am just leaving and hope they let my back in

This came from the Denver Post and the question was asked is LF the worst stadium.

Well....fear THAT thumb at least.
Legion field was a nice stadium 30+ years ago.

Now I think it would be a nice candidate for missile testing.

The neighborhood is a crumbling cesspool. Hookers, winos, addicts, and dealers standing on the corners and waving at traffic. Makes me nervous every time I go down there...hate to become a statistic just because I went to a football game.
I think Legion Field is worse than Scott Field... but I am still partial to STATE 02-13-domokun wish I was still there
