I grew up in South MS and can never remember not seeing commercials for them. They've been around forever.

After looking at the website, I need to set up my own scam.
Approved by the DOE.
Give me a break.
I'll train you and give you financial aid. I usually charge $1,750. My graduates are so grateful for the training I provide many donate some of their tips back to a sholarship fund for people just like you. That being the case, the board has awarded you the Cal Scholarship---$1,250 to be applied to your fees. And I'll throw in a jigger autographed by Moe from The Simpsons.
For your first lesson, we tackle the secrets of the exotic island cocktail, the Cuba Libra.
Wait tables somewhere and work your way up.

I agree. Wait tables somewhere and work your way up. You may even nail a few of your co-workers along the way.

No. No "career college" is worth the money, but if they were a total scam (i.e. they didn't have connections to place some graduates), I'm pretty sure the word would have spread, but who knows?
The tech schools are all scams. Ever want to feel like a college recruit? Just go to ITT and say you want to tour the facility and would like to check into their loan program.
I actually taught at a career college for a few months, so I speak from experience that they are scams, but no recruiter I know ever put a gun to someone's head and made them sign on the dotted line. They do offer a service traditional colleges don't, but my opinion is that the cost doesn't outweigh the benefits.
When I called it a scam, I didn't mean it is a crooked operation. More along the lines that no bartender or dealer school will have someone ready in three weeks. I tended bar for eight years and can't do that.
Jesse, I would advise you try to get on at an established chain that has a decent corporate training program and good lunch and dinner volume. Once you go through one of those, you can handle them all. The first few months of waiting and tending bar is about consolidation of skills so that you can do more in less time and with less movement. That is how you move from a two table station to three. Then four, then five. Same with a bar. When you can handle the service side AND 15 customers the bucks start rolling in. Be patient.
Be a team player from day one. Those co-workers will be tipping you some day.
The best thing you can do to get trained behind the bar is to upsell as a waiter. Sell sell sell.
Moore College on Poplar, I think is legitimate. Its been around a while.
The rest of the "for-profit" career training centers are just trying to get your money.
The Paul Mitchell School and reputable cosmetology schools can be worthwhile. I have a friend of mine who just graduated from Paul Mitchell and she does very well.
Also, truck driving schools can be worthwhile because most of them arrange a job for you after training. Those schools often can coordinate a future employer to pay for your education.
My stepdaughter has made a career at Ruby Tuesdays. She went from waiting tables to behind the bar. She had to do training and time at the hostess and cook positions, but after that and a Bachelors degree she went to assistant manager. The key here is that she got moved to the corporate store next door to their corporate HQ.
She got her own store shortly after graduating. Now she is a director at their coroporate offices in Maryland, TN. If you work hard and have some ambition, you can move up through some of these companies. But there is a lot of grunt work on the way. A LOT.
