My governor, Mark Sanford, had disappeared for 4 days, telling his staff that he was hiking the Appalachian Trail. Seems that he took a wrong turn along the way, ended up in Argentina with a South American hottie instead. He says the battle over turning down the stimulus package, which he lost, sent him over the edge. Good excuse for going to Argentina to stimulate his own package.

Add one more Bible thumping Republican to the pile of disgraced hypocrites.

From Politico

Mark Sanford: Back to the Basics

We would be wise to start with the biblical notion of first taking the log out of your own eye before worrying about the splinter in someone else’s. In other words, Republicans would do well to first focus on how we were beaten in November not by Democrats, but in many cases by those in our own party.

Our party took nothing short of a shellacking nationally. Some on the left will say our electoral losses are a repudiation of our principles of lower taxes, smaller government and individual liberty. But Election Day was not a rejection of those principles — in fact, cutting taxes and spending were important tenets of Barack Obama’s campaign.

Instead, voters rejected the fact that while Republicans have campaigned on the conservative themes of lower taxes, less government and more freedom, they have consistently failed to govern that way. Americans didn’t turn away from conservatism, they instead turned away from many who faked it.

Sanford is a leading proponent of the "Sanctity of Marriage" and is against any form of Gay Marriage. Apparently it is OK to carry on an affair, but lets not have any consideration for Gays who would be willing to actually commit to a partner. Loser.
Guy is a scumbag. Enough said. Leave the political angle out of it. Both sides of the aisle have members of this club and people can argue about which party has more scumbags until the cows come home. Nobody wins, especially the spouses and families of these people.

To me, using this to score political points is despicable. The guy left his family on Father's Day to cheat on his wife. Scumbag.
What a d bag.

Just chasing gays back into the closet.

So in other words if you set high standards and don't meet them, you're a pig. But if you have no standards and don't meet them, you're all good.

The American people turned their back on a party that stopped behaving "fiscally" like conservatives, and ran a candidate who was Dem Light. If you think Democrats have cornered the market on politicians with values, I'll be happy to provide you with a long list of political pigs.

The jury is out as to whether they made a mistake, but if the first 6 months are an indicator, the voters went too far left in their angst.

Not at all. Setting high standards is a must.

On the other hand, preaching one thing, "Family Values", and then whoring on the side, is hypocrisy. Whole lot of difference between setting standards and being a hypocrite.
Oh........it gets even better. Just resigned his Republican Governor's office. Dude has been having an affair, and took off with the other woman to Venezuela when he didn't get his way with his political desires last week:

At least this was discovered before he ran for President.

They didn't just preach "Family Values." They faked following them. They used family values to create a framework for law. Then they disobeyed the laws they created.
Just because he was having an affair on Father's Day weekend doesn't make him a bad guy. It's not like he did it on Thanksgiving or anything.
Quote: As a congressman, Sanford voted in favor of three of four articles of impeachment against President Bill Clinton, citing the need for "moral legitimacy."

Hey, I've been in Argentina-those women are BABES.

Still can't believe he flew 14 hours for a piece, no matter how great!

Another Republican phoney bites the dust. Good riddance.

You guys are missing the most important issue here.

Where are her pics?
lol! I already looked!!
I expect the pics to be published tomorrow.

It will take overnight to ID her, take pictures and negotiate the sale price, and post them

Pictures will be hard to get until she comes out of her current seclusion where she is negotiating the book/film rights. First things firs.
So apparently this thing has been going on for 8 years? And his office staff has copies of their emails to each other? O-kay. Oh, yeah........and she has a husband. 03-banghead
At least he set high standards.
In other words.
Total and complete hypocrite. Amazing how being a liar and a cheat can get spun into "he set high standards and didn't meet them". Like that's a notch higher than anything else.
Exactly.

It was found out that Clinton was having an affair while he WAS running for President and the libs and Dems didn't give it a second thought. If I remember they saying went "character doesn't matter".

And there you have it. Being a hypocrite is a desireable quality.
So...being a hypocrite is now an example of a "high standard"?

High quality hypocracy. High quality adultry. Hey, maybe she is a very attractive woman, high quality women for the affair.
for him to lose his mind like that, I'm guessing she was attractive.
V Was she attractive?

Monica Lewinsky

Sanford was doing Monica Lewinsky?! I thought it was an Argentinian named "Maria." Can't trust that darned old liberal media to get anything right.

Try to stay in the 21st Century or at least on topic, Dipper.
Geeze Dip, now I have to bleach my eyes and it still won't get rid of that image from my mind.

Thanks for nothing.

Seriously, what's the relevance of Monica? Are we really trying to rationalize his hypocrisy as well as his immoral behavior as better because he at least was on the record as it being wrong before? That sounds like a flat out lie if we go by his actions to me.

Let's see.

1. Say that moral behavior is paramount.
2. Go have an affair for eight years (with a married lady).

That's better than...

1. Just going and having the affair.

I don't know about that, 2 > 1 everytime. Either way you slice it, the very thing that he railed against and was so righteous about is the just what he went and did, an immoral affair.

I think the right answer is to admit that we're all human and prone to mistakes. But to be "holier than thou" and judgemental like that really sticks in my craw when they can't even be true to themselves, let alone others.
(06-25-2009 02:44 PM)DesertBronco Wrote: [ -> ]...admit that we're all human and prone to mistakes.

Gosh, DB. I can relate and agree with at least this point. I do get the hypocrisy part though.

But I also get the part about if you don't proclaim any standards for yourself or others, when your human failures become public knowledge, you generally get a pass. See Barney Frank as exhibit A.

We're all human and prone to mistakes. It was painful to watch Sanford explain (TMI) in his press conference the details. Should have made it a brief explanation. If it doesn't involve corruption, why beat it to death? It's a personal failure, a personal family matter and people don't necessarily NEED to know all the details. They may want to but that is just indicative of our celebrity worship culture and love of schadenfruede at the expense of others. But our culture is such that the media will hound him all his days to know more.

I feel the same regardless of whether the politico has a D or an R behind his/her name.

Those in "crisis management" for the rich, famous and powerful are making a great living these days. Lots of work if you're good at it.
The Dipper is anything but anonymous.

Apparently the top of Lewinsky's head was attractive enough. A wise former colleague of mine explained this phenomena thusly: "A stiff (male member) has no conscience."

And, from what I hear, Dipper, she could be your twin sister.
What does Monica Lewinski have to do with Gov. Mark Sanford® of South Carolina.
Someone has changed the subject... again.
^ One of Dipper's favorite propaganda techniques. In another life he worked in the Reichstag.

Perhaps title of this thread should be "SC Governor drops trou" rather than "a bomb."

At this rate Palin will be GOP's 2012 presidential nominee by default.

Name-calling - another propaganda technique The Dipper uses to try to distract from the actual subject of this thread - the success of GOP as the party of "Family Values."

And to think of all the times he's criticized other posters for "attacking the messenger" - when he of course was the messenger and victim of the perceived slight. Another conservative who sets "high standards" - for hypocrisy.

SC RNC leader calls for him to resign.

Quote:COLUMBIA, S.C. – A top South Carolina Republican leader says philandering Gov. Mark Sanford should resign and practice the philosophy he's preached of holding GOP leaders accountable.

Glenn McCall is one of the state's two national representatives to the Republican National Committee. He's also a county party chairman and said Thursday that party members want Sanford out.

McCall says Sanford repeatedly has said party leaders should be held accountable for not upholding the GOP's principles. And McCall says the married father of four should be held to the same standard.

I agree, he nailed it IMO.
In summary:

Mark Sanford is/was the governor of South Carolina.

South Carolina is a very conservative state.

He espoused family values and was married with 4 children.
His wife was very successful in her own career. She gave up her career to work with her husband on his political career.
[Image: mark-sanford-jenny-sanford-and-four-sons.thumbnail.JPG]

When the Republican Party used their majority status to impeach President Clinton, Sanford made negative statements about Clinton's moral behavior.

Mark Sanford has a friendship with a woman from Argentina: Maria Belen Shapur for 7 years. Then 8 years ago this relationship became an affair. It continued (continues?) until his wife kicked him out and he fled to his mistress. Oh yes, it is stated she is married as well.

This link may not be creditible.

And here is a picture of the alleged mistress:

He has made the point that others should "do as he says" and not "do as I do."

So what are your predictions, how long will Sanford last as governor?

My thought is no more than 30 days.

Anyone else?
I'm guessing he'll last a little longer than Elliot Spitzer because he wasn't dropping the kids college fund on hookers, but he'll be gone within two weeks, and will be replaced by another Republican, i.e. the Lieutenant Gov.. The beat goes on.
Quote:Amazing how being a liar and a cheat can get spun into "he set high standards and didn't meet them".

Indeed. Not unlike how Letterman's comments got spun into 'advocating raping a 14 year old'. Dip is a spinmeister par excellence, but he's been busted too many times in this forum.

Seriously, how can anyone like this SC politician? He's just another self-important hypocrit who got caught with his pants down. He sure doesn't set any standards I embrace.
