I am a source who personally knows Gary. He is quite fun to hang with and a really good person, despite what people around here think. Believe it or not, he has always been a Tiger fan but he sees through the BS and has a really objective opinion on basketball matters. Think about it, he holds one of the top five college basketball writing jobs in the country. He's seen it all, the best of it all the worst. He HAS to be impartial.
I've kept my mouth shut until now. And most people around here will confirm I never post anything other than sarcastic crap. Lay off the man.

He's married, and there were numerous times I heard him talk about banging this and hittin that. He's a SCUMBAG. he really is. Some people might wanna jump down me for putting this out, but it is what it is. Gary P is a punk.
i love Memphis and i don't like him.

So again, why chose Kentucky over Memphis? Well here is the quick answer. Bledsoe never really considered coming to Memphis in the first place. It had always been his dream as a kid to play basketball in the SEC. When I asked Bledsoe if Coach Cal had still been in Memphis would he be a Tiger he said "probably not." Next question If coach Cal had remained at Memphis would you still have gone to Kentucky? Answer, "no, I think I would have gone to Florida." Which means Calipari wasn't enough to get Bledsoe to come to Kentucky it was the school, the tradition and the conference.
05-07-2009, 02:43 PM
that blog might be true, but the quotes he gives do not make his case about the SEC.
the above would appear to be nothing more than conjecture.
two observations:
1. the author of the blog is a MS State former player and SEC fan
2. if Bledosoe really had the dream of "playing basketball in the SEC" then
(as to this point, remember: the blog doesn't say his dream was to play at UK, but in the SEC)
that may or may not be the case for Bledsoe, but here is the real point he wants to make:
Kids in this part of the country do grow up with dreams of playing for Memphis, and if he is talking about nationally, the SEC does NOT have kids around the country dreaming of playing in that conference.
SEC loving types can dream on about that.
We're not behind the 8 ball more than we have been. Conference is not that big of a deal to most players. Memphis has been OK for a while, I think we had one or two decent teams before the previous coach :sarcasm:
Quote:See Bledsoe grew up in Birmingham which is the SEC headquarters, the central city for most of the major SEC events. He had been a fan of the SEC his entire life, it has been a life long dream of his to play college basketball in the SEC. Coach Pastner did a great job of getting Bledsoe to narrow his choices down between Memphis and Kentucky but when it was all said and done as long as Coach Cal wanted Bledsoe he was going to get him even if Bledsoe knew he would have to come off the bench his first year in Kentucky Blue.

that may or may not be the case for Bledsoe, but here is the real point he wants to make:
Quote:As unfortunate as it is the University of Memphis is behind the eightball big time now when it comes to landing the top players in the nation because lets face it. Kids don't grow up with dreams to play college basketball in C-USA.

just realized I was participating in a thread hijacking, so I'll throw this in:
Gary has more connections than MOST here. That is not because of who HE is, it is because of the JOB he has.
As for KNOWING the SPORT, there are MANY here who understand it as well as he does, and quite a few who know it better. When he gets on his high horse is when I feel the need to point out his credentials as a BASKETBALL EXPERT. When he decides to come across that way, he deserves to be brought back to earth.
I don't know him and he may be a good guy, but when he acts like a condescending heel in his public treatment of the fanbase, (and he doesn't do that all the time but does sometimes), then the response is predictable. I actually think it may be intentional as part of a schtick to get reaction for the sake of increased numbers for advertisers. But nevertheless, if you act like a heel, people will think of you as a heel.

I call BS.
Kids do not grow up thinking about playing SEC basketball. No question that kids used to grow up wanting to play for Memphis purchasers...and there is likely some sentiment from kids that want to play at Arkansas. Beyond that...it is complete utter self serving BS by that blogger.
Perhaps Bledsoe wanted to play at a ky or at Florida (they did win back to back titles just a few years ago and Gainesville is an awesome place) but basketball playing kids view Memphis well ahead of the bulk of the SEC.
Kids grow up wanting to play football in the SEC- yes.
Basketball dreams? ACC, Big East, Memphis, Kansas and UCLA.

Of course most people on message boards aren't in the know, THAT'S WHY THERE ARE MESSAGE BOARDS so that there is a forum where they can state their opinions and share information, wrong or right.
