I'll start with stating that I hope we finish this season undefeated the rest of the way out and that none of the following will be relevant. I'll also put this on the smack board because I don't want to place this front and center during an important week for us.
I thought a certain recruit and Davis were buds. Didn't that guy say that Davis was the best thing that had happened to him and that he'd still consider Davis but not UAB.
If he's such a friend of Davis then why would he go to Davis' biggest rival? Is this a clue that Davis and UAB will not be associated with each other next year? Bassett's already voiced the same opinion months ago. Also our lack of a player lineup for next year seems ripe for a new regime.
I don't know how it will go down but I just don't see the evidence stacking up to expect Davis to return.
What do you expect?
I fully expect Davis to be on the sideline next season. He has not done well enough here to create demand for him elsewhere. I don't think UAB will sack him, if only because we'd have to pay his buyout. What does that leave?
OTOH, I figure if he's going to be here and given what he's going to lose off the team he'll be scrapping like hell to come up with players. I simply hope that the guys he signs qualify, make their grades, and keep their noses clean. We've had enough of taking the marginal guys and rolling the dice.
We're in on some pretty good players. I think we may come out better than we've been fearing, but then I chug the koolaid until it's obvious I'm wrong.
The same rule applies to college coaches as does to teenage girls: Don't believe a teenage boy when he tells you he loves you.

Mama Cousins was quoted as saying she likes Memphis.
I guess she got a better deal from them than Hughley.

You read my mind. I was thinking the same thing. Is it possible that CMD actually steered him to our biggest rival in an effort to get the last laugh on Garrison and Mackin? Just a thought.
It is ironic that he would go to Memphis. If he wanted to stay relatively close to home, there are other schools in the region where he'd get Big 6 exposure: Florida, FSU, Tennessee, LSU, etc. Plus, there are other institutions of higher learning in the region he could've considered: Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, Tulane, ... no, wait, never mind.

If that were true then he'd better have another gig lined up next year. Otherwise, he's cutting off his nose to spite his face.

I'm saying the recruit all on his own could be doing it to spite UAB, knowing that he's not spiteing Davis because he already knows his buddy Davis won't be there next year (just like Bassett knew).
At the beginning of the year, all the ingredients were here for a Suitcase Mike: Part Deux.
*Talented, senior-laden team
*Marquee names (and potential wins) on the schedule
*Top rated-recruit (that can go elsewhere with you)
*Potential for a deep tourney run
*Depleted squad next year
However, the eligibility bug bit CMD on the balls, and the administration did what was right for UAB. So, the senior-laden team had to play 30-40 minutes per game, the marquee wins turned into losses, and the top-rated recruit flew the coop.
Now Davis has the opportunity to do something about the last two points. With nowhere else to go, it's in his best interest to make it happen. In my opinion, the big explosion of 2009 forced Davis to align his interests with UAB's if he wants to continue his career. Before all of this went down, there was no need for Davis to have loyalty to UAB, because he was looking elsewhere.
Just as all the signs were correctly there earlier this season, I'm seeing signs right now. The only reason for him to choose to stay is a paycheck, which he can get a decent one somewhere else. It won't be a major college head coaching job but still a check as a...for example...Grizzlies assistant or Tennessee Martin coach. The only reason for the admin to retain him is to avoid paying the full buyout. I sense a deal.
George Washington will be looking for a new coach after the season.
The problem is...their coach's problem also has to do with player retention, so they won't want Davis.
Conversely, we won't want Hobbs either.
Well this conversation went front and center real quick. I expected something but not this soon.
