A Frenchman (Cugnot ?) built a steam powered automobile earlier than the Duryea brothers , Henry Ford, or Karl Benz, but there are arguments over there about who was first. There are several (maybe many) inventions Americans did produce first only to have foreign sources take over afterwards. Can you buy an American made TV, stereo, microwave oven, cell phone, MP3, etc.? "American assembled", YES, but American MADE is unlikely. His point was well made even if his example was perhaps slightly off.
