Where would you suggest for someone to stay coming to a game that is within walking distance of the arena? Also are there any bars in the same vicinity?

Tons of bars..just head over to 5 points. They are probably on the fringe of what most people consider walking distance. There's the Pickwick Hotel there as well. There's a Mariott over by the hospital as well.

Pickwick is now known as Hotel Highland and would be the best option if you want to be walking distance to booze. It's smack dab in the middle of one of the bar districts. There's other hotels closer to Bartow if that's your preference.

Doubletree Hotel is right on the corner of University and 20th. It's 2 blocks from the bars/clubs and about 6 blocks from Bartow.

There are not that many places that are "walking distance" but there are a ton that are within a one to two mile cab ride. Probably the closest nice hotel is the Courtyard Marriott on 5th Ave South. Here's the link to the Blazertalk Guide to B'ham.
