I say this because I just heard Murry Bartow on Sportsline.

Now, I don't know if he called in or was a guest- I stepped out of the room when the interview started.

I'm assuming the former because Bill Meade did not promote Bartow's upcoming appearance on his show- but he did promote whoever was running the blood drive he was broadcasting from.

But here's what I know-

Fewer than 2,800 people showed up for the season opener.

School is out.

ETSU is offering discounted tickets at $5 a pop.

And for two days straight ETSU people- first Mike White and now Murry Bartow- are calling up talk shows asking for people to come to their game against what used to be a big rival that didn't need such tactics to draw a crowd.

I'm guessing ETSU hasn't sold that many tickets for this game. That's the only thing that would explain these tactics by ETSU.

Is there another coach in Division I that would actually call up a talk show to beg for fans to come out?

I'm all for Bill Meade talking ETSU. But when a coach must call up the coach to do so- it shows you how far they've fallen.

It also shows you how out of whack everything is. This is the program that made this huge announcement they were getting $45,000 to promote their women's basketball team- but when it comes to promoting the men's team the coach has to come, hat in hand, to the talk show host two and a half hours before tip off.

Although I am all for ETSU coming hat in hand to the media. That's the way it should be.

Goldfinger

I think they are very desperate. You could hear the desperation dripping from Bartows lips in an earlier post game interview where he was pleading with fans to respect the A-sun.
If you havent noticed, Bill has been having on Murry or Jay on the day of the last few games. Knowing Murry, I doubt he would take time out of his busy schedule to call in if he wasnt asked to.
Having this game over Christmas break insured a low attendance number, I'd be shocked if there are 3,000 at the game
But shouldn't it be- "In our next hour, we're going to have Murry Bartow/Jay Sandos/A player/the guy who sweeps the floor on and we'll preview tonight's ETSU game?"

You're putting Johnson City's current leading sports celebrity- Bartow- and you're putting him on the same level as- HO HO HO- I LOVE THIS- MYSELF (as I was the caller who got Meade's show kicking back in the day)!

And yes, I WILL use this as proof positive that I am Johnson City's leading sports celebrity now. Bartow is now following in my footsteps!

The true leader has EMERGED!
Well thats Bill Meade's fault, not ETSU's.
No it isn't!

If ETSU wants their coach on the air, they should arrange it BEFORE THE SHOW.

Now, personally I'd love it if Meade just feels the school has burned him so much in the past he won't return their calls and so they are FORCED to call in.

But I don't think that's what is happening. I could be wrong, though, and hope I am.
Just how desperate is this board in that they have moved this topic to BucOff?
HOW BOUT THOSE STEELERS?! 05-stirthepot
Well, considering that what will likely happen is this means the Colts will face the Titans in the first round now, how 'bout 'em indeed!
I think what Murry was doing was promoting the program. Somebody else complimented a former coach for actually coming to the dorms to get the students to come to the game. I assume Murry was doing the same, although he was likely asked to call in.

Morehead State? "Big" Rival? I don't know about that. Regional yes, and an opponent we have played forever, but I don't think I would call it big. App & Chattanooga fit in that category, along w/ new rival Belmont (at least in my opinion) but I don't know about Morehead.

One of the better student sections we had in recent years was when the players came out to promote @ the Culp Center - we were playing Gardner-Webb that night, and barely got away w/ a victory, and I think that was two years ago.
The Colts are facing the Chargers in the first round, the Titans have a first round bye.
funny - on earlier posts there were complaints about lack of marketing. now, the coach tries to talk up a game and gets knocked for it. 01-lauramac2 not sure whey we would knock coach b on this. i do believe i am going to start a petition to get my pittbuc named the new director of marketing.
