I say this because I just heard Murry Bartow on Sportsline.
Now, I don't know if he called in or was a guest- I stepped out of the room when the interview started.
I'm assuming the former because Bill Meade did not promote Bartow's upcoming appearance on his show- but he did promote whoever was running the blood drive he was broadcasting from.
But here's what I know-
Fewer than 2,800 people showed up for the season opener.
School is out.
ETSU is offering discounted tickets at $5 a pop.
And for two days straight ETSU people- first Mike White and now Murry Bartow- are calling up talk shows asking for people to come to their game against what used to be a big rival that didn't need such tactics to draw a crowd.
I'm guessing ETSU hasn't sold that many tickets for this game. That's the only thing that would explain these tactics by ETSU.
Is there another coach in Division I that would actually call up a talk show to beg for fans to come out?
I'm all for Bill Meade talking ETSU. But when a coach must call up the coach to do so- it shows you how far they've fallen.
It also shows you how out of whack everything is. This is the program that made this huge announcement they were getting $45,000 to promote their women's basketball team- but when it comes to promoting the men's team the coach has to come, hat in hand, to the talk show host two and a half hours before tip off.
Although I am all for ETSU coming hat in hand to the media. That's the way it should be.
