The starters played a lot tonight... Too much. I'm arguing that the bench players get some more playing time. Check it out at the TOD. We'll get 'em next time, Tigers.

Tacky.
Reads like you are trying to drum up hits more than make a strong point. Not picking on you and Calipari may very well use Sallie and Spoon and Robinson more but the post is still...
Tacky.

Your comment is not only illogical, it completely overlooks what I said. Cal has always used the depth of our bench, which is why our players stay fresh and run other teams down at the end of games.

Cal said after the game that he should've played Sallie more. Does that qualify my conditional comment as unconditional support now?

That would be pretty amazing seeing as my post and jbish's post occurred at the same time.
SO does everyone in here thing the team is just dandy? I don't. I don't see us winning the C-USA and I don't see us getting far in the dance, if we're even invited. We have no go-to guy on the team. Just a dribble drive offense that struggles when other teams play a sagging zone, because we can't shoot to save our lives. Our defense is the only thing we have going for us.

lenetzach Wrote:Sorry but I have to rain on your parade but you missed a very important distinction. There has always been a difference in minutes between all games and close games. (And someone has always complained). Here are (a sample of) the numbers to back up my statement:
Last year the starters averaged 69% of minutes.
But look how Cal played them in close games:
USC 72%
UAB 75.5%
Gonzaga 77.5%
utk 72%
We could go on with other ones or go back to previous years and find the same pattern, I just picked those and they bore out my memory of the way things have been.
This year, the starters from tonight's lineup have averaged 66.4% of minutes so far, and they played 75% of minutes tonight.
The bottom line is that Cal shortens the bench when games are close - he plays reserves if they are playing well and keeping the game close, but more pt goes to those who are making the plays at both ends, or whom he feels should be able to make plays.
In general, he tends to play reserves more time in the first half and when the Tigers are up by say 10 points or more, as long as that lead is maintained, but in tighter games the bench has always gotten shorter. Nothing new here from his style with those very successful teams.
You can argue with his decisions, and some people have, but his teams always develop, and there is a reason he gets paid the big bucks and we don't.
Nobody (bench or starters) really stepped up and made enough plays tonight, and that is why we lost.

We lost because the team isn't that good this year. It's hard to replace losing three guys to the NBA. It's impossible to replace DRose. We're going to struggle through CUSA. We'll lost 10 games this year.

As for Rose, and this will win me NO fans here, but I think he cost you the NC. I never wanted to say it, but I followed Memphis B-Ball last year with much enthusiasm, and an even greater amount of beer, and the guy played "lights out" pretty much all year. He just couldn't do it in the NC when it came to the free throws. ....but it was still one game. The guy is phenomenal and will be a force to be reckoned with in the NBA.
