Who here really believes that CDC would really do that. REALLY? That is a bunch of BS if ever I have read it. The ponies just want to make themselves feel better.
Something like this could have been said in a different way and spun out of context. CDC could have been asked about the Katy kid and he responded that our staff wanted Lewis and didn't really go after their guy because they felt Lewis was a much better fit for our system. That is not knocking the kid. There are tons of highly rated QBs that are not recruited by every school.
Who knows on the last comment since his job is to fire up and promote Rice football. What AD would say we are going to win in a nail biter?
Bottom line, they have posted a couple of threads here and numerous over there trying to stir the pot and develop bulletin board material.
Let's play the game.[/code]
First, it's folly to think that our AD knows everyone we recruited. If the kid told us early on that he wasn't interested in Rice, or interested in playing so close to home or whatever... I doubt his name would have even come up in a conversation between CDC and DB.
Second, anyone who has ever spoken to CDC knows that he doesn't talk that way... ever... He might have been fired up about the game... and might have said It's going to be a shootout... we're both going to put up big numbers... but NO WAY he says "we're going to hang a big number on you", or anything along those lines... unless I suppose he's speaking to a close friend who says similar things to him... all tongue in cheek.
Finally... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Well, they think they should never lose to us ....
EVERYONE thinks that they should NEVER lose to US!!! Well, wake up people! That is a statistical impossibility. Not to mention the fact that I think Rice football is finally starting to get better. Whenever someone from SMU says anything of the sort I am always going to think, "yeah, this coming from a program that was so brazenly cheat they were the only one to ever get the death penalty". I think SMU has a long ways to go before they can get that stink off of them.
I have a very good friend that NEVER lies, and hes goes to church with June Jones. And according to my good friend that never lies, June Jones eats babies and burns the American flag.
Whats worse than the stupidity of the "rumor" on PonyFans[/i] is that some of the posters seem to believe it.

Does he cook the babies over the burning American flag? What kind of flavor does that add?
..and yeah, I have a hard time believing that CDC said those things.
Just looking for the nugget of truth in the absurd rumor that normally can be found. CDC went to church. Probably true. CDC talked Rice football. Probably true. CDC said we wouldn't/didn't recruit a kid. Probably not true, but at least plausible. If asked about a specific kid, I could see CDC saying something like, "Kid's a great athlete and we would love to have that talent here, but for one reason or another which I am not at liberty to discuss, we are unable to pursue the kid." What was that reason? Who knows. Could be grades. Could be SAT score. Could be that he indicated he was not willing to go through an on-campus summer program. Could be he asked Rice to match an improper incentive offered by another school (that could never happen with SMU, could it???). Could be a lot of things. Face it, Rice can't recruit a majority of kids who are very good players because Rice's standards are higher than most schools' standards. A minimum NCAA qualifier would not only not fit in at Rice, but would be unlikely to stay eligible, so Rice won't recruit him. Maybe the kid is brilliant but wanted to dictate the offense. I don't know. The whole point is that when you have to get one of your boosters to make up a boyfriend of a cousin's sister who overheard something at the small town, post church service diner between mouthfuls of chicken fried steak and during breaks in the jukebox noise in order to get bulletin board material, either you are hard up or the opponent is keeping its house pretty clean. But let them stir it up if that will get more butts in seats on Friday.

I presume that "hes" was intended to be "she", but I didn't know Mandy knew June Jones.

Wow! Amazing he would do that! Oh well, it'll just make our win Friday that much sweeter.
I think it is comical that SMU, of all programs, thinks they should never lose to us. UT, yes, UH, maybe, SMU, c'mon, you're kidding me, right?
Looking at the series over the years, it was very even up until THEY decided to start cheating. Then there was the stretch where they won 19 of 22 games until their program got shut down. We have won 15 of the last 19 since they came back from the Death Penalty. Of course, you will never hear them mention the first time our two teams played, not that anyone who was alive at that time is still with us.
They think that June Jones will bring them back to the dominance they had over us from 1965-1987 but nothing will really change unless they decide to start cheating again. They seem to forget the Jones' Hawaii teams still had trouble with us!
But, as stated, if stirring the pot intensifies this rivalry and puts some butts in the seats Friday, I'm all for it!
So Hambone went over to the Ponyfan board and made some very logical arguments regarding the alleged CDC comments and also this supposed comment from a former Rice player that he was paid to play football at Rice (!!). Here is the response from the guy passing along that information.
"Hambone, this was not some random person 'running around bragging about being paid'...he was a close friend of my father, he quarterbacked Rice to a victory over Texas, he is an honest and decent man."
I am not a Rice football historian, but the details included in this last comment narrows SIGNIFICANTLY the number of guys who could have potentially made that statement. Josh LaRocca was the QB in 1994. I seriously doubt A) that he is a close friend of a father of someone of college age, (Josh is what- 33-34?) or B) that he was ever paid something illegally. I was around during that time, and it simply did not happen. Before 1994, when was the last time we beat Texas? 1965? Who was the QB then? Better question- was paying players a problem or something that was done at ANY schools in the early 1960's?
I don't know- this smells pretty fishy to me.
EDIT- I just re-read the thread and the guy definitely said it was someone pre-death penalty, so it has to be 1965 (the last pre-dp year we beat Texas) or earlier. Give me a break.
Total BS, but at least they are doing it on their board.
MA.... exactly my thought process.
