What is meant by "Zero Waste" football games? Still many questions to be answered and many pockets to be lined!
Zero waste is a "sustainable design" term that means something along the lines of reusing and recycling everything that is used at the stadium. I believe it goes as far as reusing waste water from sinks, water fountains, and toilets(that has been retreated) to water the grass and other plants in the fairgrounds.
They are really talking about spending some big money if they are going to try to make the fairgrounds anywhere close to "sustainable"
Does that include a security force?
That article said absolutely nothing, in fact I am dumber for reading it.
Anything that helps our campus out across the street. I think we need a ton of it to be green space with unique landscaping. Then the rest of it... Not sure yet. I will get back on that one.
From a development standpoint, it says alot. They appear to be looking at it using LEED type design standards. Imagine parking lots that are grass, like the stadium in Miami. Green spaces to handle storm water - This one is a newer concept out there in vogue on the east and west coasts and gaining ground in Georgia.
Grass parking lots sound like a mess to me. I would however enjoy the parking areas to be broken up with plenty of green space between them for tailgaiting. If you demolish the MSC, Libertyland, and many of the old buildings, you still prob have the capacity to increase the overall number of parking spaces while throwing in plenty of green space and fields for tailgating and sports fields.

I agree. I used to work for the FedEx St. Jude Classic for a couple of years by directing the (grass) parking lots there in Southwind. On wet days it was a mess. Mud everywhere.
It depends on if they are grass-crete and designed as parking with reinforcing and drainage or it is just a grass field with stripes.

If it is designed for parking then that sounds like a great plan, but I think I would need to see it first because the only experience I have with grass parking just turns to mud and trenches.

Completely agreed, especially with as flat as the existing parking is, water needs some help to make it go somewhere.
On the flipside, we could go muddin' all fall and winter long.
I hope they leave the pavement. Just need to paint some lines to mark parking spots.
Let's see we go Green by ripping up the parking lot and then laying down grass. Now we have acres of grass that needs to be cut. Looks like we just increased our Carbon Footprint. Those lawn mowers run on Gas..... Not to mention the amount of energy that will be used to demo the current parking lot.

But stormwater quality will be better, the heat in September will be less.
I agree with redeveloping it, there definately is a higher and better use for the site. What to do exactly, i dont know. If the memphis economy was in a better place, i would say do some kind of a mixed use dev. that area is ripe for redevelopment. The train yard and south of it are negatives but just to the east of the fairgrounds is nice.
