Forum Members--

I propose a Fantasy Owl League whereby the performance of the Owls against its regular season opponents are scored in the same way that certain Fantasy Football Leagues are scored. Based on such scoring, the participants would promise a contribution to the Extra Point Club for use by the Rice football program. Such a program would be similar to the successful ‘Dollars For Dingers’ used by the Rice baseball program.

The program would work as follows:

1. The scoring would be based on the standard CBS Sports scoring system as detailed in the attached file. Fantasy points are given for various offensive and defensive results so the League participants would be very interested in how well the Owls do—the better the Owls perform, the more money goes to the Football program.

2. Each member of the Fantasy Owls would make a commitment upon entry to the League based on the total number of points the Owls score during the regular season using the CBS Sports scoring system. Such commitment would be due and payable to the Extra Point Club after the last regular season game.

3. As a point of reference, I used the CBS Sports scoring system for the 2006 season when the Owls went to the New Orleans Bowl. Here are the results of the scoring from that watermark year—

Cumulative fantasy points (12 gm reg season) 1,044

Average fantasy points per game 87

Projected 12 games x Average 1,044

Annual $ Cost at various levels assuming same performance as 2006:
$0.10 /point $104.40
$0.25 /point $261.00
$0.50 /point $522.00
$1.00 /point $1,044.00
$5.00 /point $5,220.00

4. I would administer the scoring of this League and report each week to the participants. I would be the final arbiter of the scoring as the ‘Commissioner’ of the Fantasy Owl League.

5. At the end of the year, I would total all scoring and bill each participant with all funds going directly to the Extra Point Club. There will be no administrative fees taken out of your commitments--all your dollars will go directly to the Extra Point Club for use by the Rice football program rather than to me.

6. If you would like to participate in this Fantasy Owl League and help raise funds for the Rice football program, send me a private message telling me of your commitment (minimum of $0.10/fantasy point) and giving me your contact info. It would be good to get your commitments in before the game on Friday but anyone could join the league at any time during the football season but the commitment would be for all 12 regular season games regardless of date of entry.

I've been told "Dollars for Dingers" no longer serve their original purpose. They now go to the "general athletic fund" as opposed to upgrading the BB players road meals and such.

If this info is correct, how does the Extra Point Club keep their funds directed specifically to the FB program?

Each of the sports has its own SIG (special interest group) to raise funds for that specific sport. The SIG for baseball is the RBI Club, football has the Extra Point Club, etc., etc. The "Dollars for Dingers" program is a special case of a program that seems like it ought to be money for a specific sport, but in fact raises money for the general fund. For that reason, I didn't make a pledge this year.

Sorry for the delay in my direct response but I've been trying to get an official response from Rice to the question. From a very reliable source at Rice (Development office), I received the following response to your query:

"I know since atleast 2004, Dollars for Dingers has benefitted the general scholarship fund (and been advertised as so,) which of course benefits the scholarships of the baseball team and all of our student-athletes. I am sorry for any confusion on the matter. In the past couple of years, soccer started a similar pledge fundraiser and that money does go straight to their SIG fund. I think the difference is just different programs finding strategies that work best for them - for example, the RBI club finding strength in obtaining memberships at $500 and $1000, and soccer finding more success in pledges. The Dollars for Dingers was popular and fun, so development continued to use it for the scholarships."

This is consistent with Da Owl and Owl93's understanding that the Dollar For Dingers benefits the general scholarship fund and is not just for baseball. However, I used the Dollar For Dingers example since the 'game' is most similar to the Fantasy Owl League I'm proposing, i.e., dollars committed for performance of an athletic team. The fact that the Fantasy Owl League proceeds go directly to the Extra Point Club, the Special Interest Group for football, means that all FOL funds will benefit the football program only and not the general scholarship fund.
Scoring in the Fantasy Owl League after the SMU game:

Total offense points 137
Total defense points 20
Total points 157

Cumulative points 157

Average per game 157

Projected 12 games x Average 1,884

Projected $ Cost at various levels:
$0.10 $188.40
$0.25 $471.00
$0.50 $942.00
$1.00 $1,884.00
$5.00 $9,420.00

The 157 fantasy points is higher than the highest game from the 2006 bowl season (Army-148 points). Come join the league and contribute to the Owls football program success this year.

It is still not too late to enter. Remember, the more you commit/fantasy point and the better the football team does, the more money that is raised for the football program. Private Message (PM) me if you want to join.
