who didn't see CoC scheduling the weakest team for themselves in the first round?
R
You know, I would hope the athletic director of Temple would come down for this tournament.
And I would also hope that somebody from Johnson City in the media would come down and interview him and ask him why it is important for the Owls to have football.
Because it has often been stated that if there was ever a college that should drop football, it would be Temple.
It doesn't give them conference membership. They have to rent out Lincoln Financial Field and I can't imagine the crowds of 5,000 they get even pays for the rent there.
They were so bad the Big East kicked them out (and I actually don't think that was such a good idea because it gave the Big East football TV package the Philadelphia market, but the question was if anyone wanted to watch it). They never win.
They once played for a trophy called "The Old Shoe."
They are probably in the shadow of the Philadelphia Eagles even more than ETSU was/is in the shadow of the Tennessee Volunteers.
My guess is that-
A- Some wealthy donors want Temple to have football. Bill Cosby, for instance. And it doesn't make much sense for Temple to tick off Bill Cosby.
B- Exposure. Say what you will, but in an area with Penn, Villanova, Thomas Jefferson, Drexel, LaSalle, Bryn Mawr, Haverford, PHILADELPHIA TEXTILE for that matter- saying "We have Division I football" is a bragging point.
C- My guess is that Lincoln Financial wouldn't have been built unless it would receive more than just 10 events for the Eagles. When public money is to be used for building a stadium, it has to benefit more than just one entity. Hence, having Temple football play there means it benefits not just a private business (the Eagles), but the community at large.
D- Temple charges an awful lot for tuition. I would merit a guess it would cost more to go to Temple for one year than it would ETSU for four.
So, what Johnson City has to do is-
A- It's time for the powerful people that be to speak out. If Bill Green really wants football back at ETSU he needs to make a public statement saying so.
Can you imagine the Philly media if Bill Cosby were to rip Temple? Temple would never live it down!
Yet here the media can't even figure out if the stadiums are built or not.
B- The exposure issue is essentially the same here as it is there. Right now Tusculum is kicking ETSU's ass.
C- Here's where the public at large, and not just the supposed power brokers, of the community need to step forward. Specifically, while the state says they will not give money to universities for their athletic programs, they will obviously give them to high schools.
Hence, why not have public money build a stadium for Science Hill (which they need) that ETSU can use?
The only reason why they wouldn't is if the basketball people at Science Hill realize to do so, it would enlist future athletes to wish to play football instead of basketball. And let's face it, at Science Hill, nothing is to disrupt the basketball team.
Just like at ETSU, nothing is to disrupt the golf team.
Yet another reason why the "sport" of basketball should be done away with.
D- Student fees, anyone?
