On the front page of the Daily Helmsman today there was an article about the new Student Government. In the article, new SGA President Abby Hagan mentioned that she and others at the university are considering erecting a Tiger statue to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the University's founding. The statue would probably cost about $100,000, and would hopefully be paid for entirely through private donations. I'd link the article, but the Daily Helmsman's website is down right now. I think it's a great idea and would give the university 4 years to raise money and hopefully the statue will be done right.
Why don't they put it in Olive Branch?

Please tell the Helmsman editor that, as much as I would LOVE a tiger statue ~ and I have pushed for one for years, and you could probably get one for a lot less than $100,000 ~ we need a weight room first, and then an indoor practice field so we don't have to practice at a local high school. Just sayin......

Just don't ask R.C. to help, because he won't tell anybody about it.
We should start another top secret fundraising campaign.

The statue and it's donations (if it becomes a reality-- this was just an idea the SGA was throwing around) aren't related to athletics. It also probably wouldn't be unvailed til 2012 to celebrate our centennial. We constructed the clock tower to commemorate some sort of anniversary did we not? Also, I bet for $100,000 it would be a big statue and would be done right (read: not like UABs dragon statue). Like I said-- it might not even happen, I think the SGA leadership was just brainstorming. But I do think that our 100th anniversary would be a perfect time to do something like this.
On a side note, my dislike of the Daily Helmsman grows every year. One of the headlines on Monday read "Tiger Football Team: A Mix of Veterans and Newcomers"-- duh- every team is a mixture of veterans and newcomers. Another article spent two paragraphs describing the role of a quarterback. I'm seriously considering starting a blog that holds the Helmsman accountable for what they write, in addition to providing blunt commentary from students and detailed sports reports. I think a blog of this sort would be very popular, and catch on quickly with students and readers of this forum. Unfortunately, I'm lazy, so I doubt I'll follow through on this pipe-dream.
Currently, the newspaper has no oversight, so they print whatever they want and they don't have to answer for what they write. I was just in an argument yesterday with 3 students who were complaining that our athletic department is grossly overfunded. Most of their views come from Helmsman articles. I'd say 75% of what the Helmsman writes is criticism of the University, which leads to student resentment and the current low morale of our disjointed student population. I think it's borderline sensationalism that caters to the theater type students who want Memphis to be nothing more than a commuter school without student fees.
Maybe you should join the paper and try to help improve it!
I hear the new SGA president is one sharp cookie.
Monday, the 2nd page of the Helmsman was a complete page about how to tell good liquor from bad liquor.

The brands they wrote about aren't the brands most often consumed at college parties. Something about Heaven Hill and Evan Williams doesn't seem to please to the Daily Helmsman.
I have been calling for a Tiger statue for several years now. The pedestal should be a depository for our live mascot ashes. Such a statue would have tremendous symbolic value which would result in priceless campus mystique and public relations dividends over the years. This is really an inexpensive way to improve perceptions, which is what UofM badly needs to do. We have to stimulate pride and try to reach the 80,000 or so alumni who aren't doing their part. $100,000 is only 3.3% more than the weightroom project. I say we must do BOTH, and am delighted to hear that the student body supports the idea.
The best location would be in front of a new on-campus stadium. Next best would be in the courtyard fronting the Adminstration Building and between the Univesity Center and the old Brister Library Building.

I can't seem to find the article online...no real surprise. They are already showing the paper for August 31, 2008 online. Not much makes sense there.

I agree with the both part! you know there are probably people- alumni and such who might would rather donate their money to something like a statue- as some of us tend to forget, not everyone is into athletics, maybe there would be more donors for a statue than we think...bc most of us on this board focus mainly on athletics and things of that nature.
All good posts! OCS with a tiger!
The tiger statue at Mizzou is one fine thing and reinforces their great tradition. Students rub its head for luck before exams. We could benefit from our own tiger.

Love that idea.

I think I agree with everything you say, except the "CUSA is great" stuff. This is exactly what should be done.
