Full Version: RC fails to mention weightroom fundraising campaign

on lapides this morning
He has plenty of time to talk about the Cubs and Elvis, but not the fundraising campaign.
I am now convinced more than ever that this is being setup to FAIL.

We ALL need to work harder than we thought to get the word out about this.

It's all on us.
What is RC's email address?

Of course it is. The line will be that the big money donors really came through but the fanbase as a whole won't do it, followed by the economy being bad. This will be a nice way of killing the OCS bird with one stone as well. What kind of a complete LOSER would you have to be as an AD to not mention the weight room fund raising when you're on the ******* radio?

The players don't actually spend much time in the stands or at concessions at the LB. Money will be spent on the weight room and to get the city to make the locker rooms at the LB really nice. If they manage that they will possibly have the indoor practice field project done but it isnt' necessary.

Raines and RC will do this to appease the fanbase into forgetting about an OCS. Actually, they won't care what people want; they just won't do it.

Thanks!....but gotigersgo isn't working on my computer for some reason. Anybody else having this problem. Hopefully it's their problem and not my computer.
RC isn't perfect, but I consider him to be one of the better AD's in the country. No doubt, he is far and away the best we ever had here. I don't remember past AD's ever being on the radio, except for Cavagnaro trying to explain why we were under NCAA investigation.

RC has made a few mistakes and I don't agree with him on all things, but he will be hard to replace. The only perfect man I know of was crucified over 2,000 years ago.

It strikes me that our messageboard is much like the Commercial Appeal. It seems we prefer to talk about what is wrong rather than what is right about UofM.

I was looking forward to your spin on this one. RC simply ****** the dog on this one and it's indefensible and inexcuseable.

Some folks have insinuated on this board that the administration is secretly wanting this campaign to fail. I'm no consipracy theorist, but this morning tells me that either that's true or RC is a bigger dolt than even I thought he was.

Good post.+2

I'll talk about what is good...

The Flaut golf compex
The new softball field
An anonymous donor gave $3 Million towards the Hall of Fame before Penny gave his $1 Million
Ambassadors gave $1.5 Million toward the weightroom before the current "secret" campaign was announced

However, I still can't believe that they screwed up the pledge cards and RC failed to mention it on the radio this morning. Many folks are totally unaware of this fundraising campaign. I read about it in the paper, but have yet to receive anything about it directly from the University. I accessed the website for a pledge card, but that's because I read about it on here. Most folks don't read message boards.

If he was prepared, he would go into the radio show with a handwritten agenda of things to talk about besides Cal, Elvis and whatever else. He is not utilizing his opportunity to sell the U of M
as well as he should.

Football and fundraising for the weight room should be at the top of the list at this point in time.

RC is great at sucking up to the fat cats, but I would say that his lack of preparation and anticipation is below average a lot of the time.

He has to do this once a month. That's not enough time to jot down a few notes, is it?

Either he did it on purpose or he was ill prepared. You CANNOT forget something that important. You simply cannot.

The weightroom should have been the 3rd thing mentioned after the Penny donation for the HOF and the game on Saturday.

It strikes me that folks on this messageboard would rather stand idly by while an opportunity as golden as existed this morning (a captive, sports minded audience) gets IGNORED while Elvis and the Cubs get center stage.

He blew it. Plain and simple. Defending otherwise is just foolhardy.

You know, sometimes I think folks don't want things to get any better.

I'm not content with "settling" for second best. I support a damn first rate, top notch university. It's time for some of its administration and some of its "fans" to start acting like it.

I agree he blew it...Now everybody who can call these shows and mention it....901-360-8255

I'm surprised Lapides didn't ask him about it. Lapides is usually well prepared with good questions..
Could you ever imagine Cal (or Jurich at Louisville --or Kyatt or the new young guys at Miss St.) getting on the radio and not mentioning it at least 3 times???

Does Cal have to do everything positive? The anwser is yes.

I envision RC actually working 1-2 hours per day.

Pardon me, but RC has 2 spots a month on Lapides show. The first one is the second Wednesday of the month and the last Wednesday of the month. He should have been mention this first thing and then the rest. Penny donation is specially but the weight room is more important. He has had 2 different times that he could have mentioned it and didnt neither time. If the AD is not going to promote what you need when on radio, then he needs to keep his mouth shut on anything outside of what are the concerns of the UM. Talking cubs or Elvis should be off limits as far as he is concerned but he shows what is really important to him. What a sad job he does. Maybe Cal can get him some training on how to deal with the press, like he does with the players. God knows RC need major help in this area.

In this one case, perhaps we could best help the university by spending our energy spreading the word about this campaign, and giving constructive feedback to those in charge instead of pointing fingers at each other (in both directions).

....just one fan's opinion.

I was pleasantly suprised yesterday when I got a note from RC (albeit a form letter) thanking me for our contribution to the weight room campaign.
I think most are missing out on the main point - he's the freaking ATHLETIC DIRECTOR - this should be one of his priorities when speaking in public...in fact, there is no other point to be made in this thread...he F'ed up and his careless attitude towards football should sicken those who support the school...
We're going to have to do it ourselves, guys. It's that simple.
Here's RC's interview. Hear for yourself. RC Johnson

Now, Now, watch out for your blood pressure, he's not worth a cardio.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt it wasn't willful but it sure was stupid. Make a checklist of what you want to talk about before you go on and double check it during the commercial break, geez.

RC should learn from Coach Cal. Cal pounds home his message consistently and with great vigor. RC wasted an opportunity today.

Yes, and naturally that will be the big focus, with no thought to all the times he has done a great job over the years. Beside being with Lapides twice a month, he also has regular interviews on AM600, AM730 and others, as well as TV and live speeches. If some of you were held to the same standards as you hold RC, in your own jobs, you would be in deep ****.

We have also been told by some here that this will be a sort of litmus test for future endeavors. So basically what we have is a campaign that almost nobody knows about that started with pledge cards that didn't even include a spot for contact info, and our dumba$$ AD got on the radio and didn't even mention the campaign, but had plenty of time for Elvis and the Cubs.

Hmmmm...I wonder how the AD's office and the school want the test to turn out. If this stuff wasn't so important and wasn't screwing with the future of our football program for eternity, it would be stupid enough and funny enough to laugh about.

You couldn't make up a story about an AD being so stupid and have people believe that is was true. You just couldn't.

I don't think asking an athletic director to mention a fund-raising drive FOR HIS ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT is asking too much.

GA, RC could shoot Melba dead live on the 10:00 news and you'd make excuses for him.

ZING!!!
The truth hurts!

I just cannot believe our AD is that incompetent. That is his JOB.

And actually, I have held myself to the same standards I am expecting of R.C. I have helped promote campaigns for a local charity, and it is not that hard to figure out how to get all sorts of free publicity. RC should mention this every time he gets any air time.

I have been on the radio, and the beauty of radio is that you CAN have a list of talking points in front of you, and usually the radio host is more than willing to give you a lead-in to your talking points, because it makes for a smoother show. I had no training in that, but I CARED about my charity and it really was not that hard. Geesh!

I had to go to the AOB today. There were more "suits" there than I had ever seen, primarily around the TSF side of the building.

today was the quarterly TSF board luncheon. the chicken and pilaf were pretty good.

I was told over the whole Penny fiasco that by "speaking out", I (and others) was damaging the possibility of future large donations by being such a vocal critic.

How is not soliciting donations WHILE YOU HAVE A CAPTIVE AUDIENCE any worse?

God bless you folks that have been carrying the load for so long. At some point, that load is going to get heavy(ier). Unreal that it seems that every single week- not once a year- but every week there is a thread on here about the ineptness of the current administration. Thing is, its not the "usual suspects" anymore. Its people that give a lot of money and time that are getting sick and tired of being the only ones that care.

God help this athletic department when that finally happens.

I'll say it real slow so that you get it.

R.C. Johnson is the Athletic Director of the University of Memphis. A NCAA Division ONE University.

He should be held to a MUCH HIGHER STANDARD than the rest of us. With all of that experience and pay comes more responsibility.

I'll put it this way. If RC were held to the same standards in his job as I am, then he would be in deep ****.

I fully understand and can't really disagree with much of what you've said. I'm not completely blind to the issues at hand.

The challange is fixing the problems without disrupting some of the good things that have been developed over the last few years, such as the core (small) core of brave souls that have taken the heavy burden of financing a large part of the gifts to our athletic programs. Over the years, our AD has developed a really good relationship with some of the really great and deep pocketed supporters of our program. It's a delicate balance.

Jeb, thanks for explaination for the large number of folks at the AOB today.
