I live out in a large master planned community in Missouri City and I didn't realize how many football coaches for both Rice and Houston live out here (actually it's not just football coaches, a lot of other coaches and administrators live out here from both schools).
Both Bailiff and Sumlin live out here (in different neighborhoods that are actually several miles apart). And I'd conservatively guess that 60-70 percent of the football coaching staffs for both schools live out here too. I met the UH asst. coach who coaches the offensive line this morning at our school's bus stop while we were both dropping off our daughters for the trip to elementary school. I had never met him before but he only lives a block away. He was telling me well over half the UH staff lives out here in various neighborhoods. One of the UH assistant basketball coaches for Penders lives in our neighborhood too.
I just thought it was funny. UH is a rival but really in the big picture, Rice and Houston are compatriots in a lot of different ways.
I hope your daughter pulled the UH asst coaches daughters pig tails.

It used to be true that the Oiler player and coaches both mostly lived around Missouri City. I assume it is also probably true with the Texans.

Do they carpool?
Many of the Rice football coaches did carpool while I was at Rice.
That's badass!
Now if we could just combine out powers...

I've been up close to him at work, Joe Gilbert (the Houston OL coach) is an intense guy.
In all honesty, this rivalry is just starting to get going.
For over a decade I have wondered why so many college coaches live in that part of town. It has its attractions, but so do many other areas (some closer to town and/or airports, some not) of the 4th largest city in the nation. In any case the concentration simply cannot be by chance. One theory is that there is a particular relocation company that athletic departments tend to refer their new coaching hires to, and this company in turn tends to refer its clients to certain builders or realtors who are active in that particular area of Houston.
Pearland is another popular destination. Pearland, Missouri City and Sugar Land are 20-30 minutes tops of a commute (especially when the coaches and staff can commute off-hours) and the schools are good and housing is inexpensive.
Northwest Houston's commute to either Rice or Houston is a mess. Same with Katy, Spring and the Woodlands. Kingwood isn't horrible during off-hours. And most coaches can't afford Bellaire or West University or the cost of sending their kids to private schools if they live elsewhere in HISD's territory.
I am surprised more UH folks don't live in Clear Lake, League City, Friendswood, etc. That seems to be a reasonable commute for them.
Briles actually lived a stones throw from where I do now in the Montrose area.
That's surprising to me since he seemed like such a country type.
