OH MY GOD this rain is starting to piss me off! 02-13-domokun

Our boys had to do their final scrimmage in the rain this past Saturday, and it looks like they aren't gonna get any practice time out of the stuff this entire week.

Now the Weather Channel is saying something about possible scattered thunderstorms for this coming Saturday...

I don't know what to think. Is it ruining our practices leading up to this important opener, or is it going to give us an edge if it continues raining all the damn way through Saturday?!
We practiced in the rain in high school and only moved things indoors when there was lightning... an indoor practice facility connected to the practice fields, weight room/training room, and a new football office/locker room would come in handy. 05-stirthepot
We haven't had more than a thimble-full here the midwest since May. I haven't had to cut the grass in 5 weeks!
All I know is that my neighbors were leaving their houses two by two this morning...

Blazers Hold First Game Week Practice At Legion Field

Tuesday's practice moved from campus because of wet field conditions

Aug. 26, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- After nearly a month of preseason practice, the UAB football team has finally reached game week. With wet conditions at the practice fields on campus, the Blazers moved Tuesday's workout to the artificial surface at Legion Field.

For the players, it was a good opportunity to see action on the same field where they will open the season in four days. The Blazers will host preseason Conference USA West Division favorite Tulsa on Saturday at Legion Field with kickoff set for 3 p.m. CT.

Though UAB practiced much of the afternoon in the rain, UAB head coach Neil Callaway viewed the move to Legion Field in a positive light.

"It's a great advantage any time we get a chance to get over here, to be on the turf and be in this environment," Callaway said. "Obviously, the field dimensions are the same everywhere, but it's always good to practice where you play."

As the season opener nears, UAB continues to work on the game plan for Tulsa and against the scout team running the Golden Hurricane's scheme. Callaway was pleased with Tuesday's practice and said his team is continuing to improve as kickoff approaches.

"It was a really good practice," Callaway said. "We did some good things and had some good competition. I thought both sides competed really well, and I thought the scout team did a really good job of putting on Tulsa's offense, helping us to prepare for some of the things they do."

Saturday's contest with Tulsa marks the first time since 2004 UAB has started the season at home and the first time in program history the Blazers have opened against a Conference USA opponent.

"I think we're ready," Callaway said. "We'll continue to work over the next few days and dial down the contact the rest of the week. We've still got some work to do, but you can see the guys are focused and excited about playing Tulsa."

Take it from someone in agri-business: DO NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT THE RAIN!!!! We have been in dire need of it for about 2 years now to the point that people have been praying for George Bush to turn on his hurricane machine.

I think we are going to bloody their nose Saturday........
7+ inches of rain in Prattville for the storm. Not complaining we need it. I hope North Alabama got some to fill up some ponds and reservoirs.
Anything that makes the team tougher.
Lets just hope the rain doesn't start until the tailgates are packed up and everyone is in the stadium.
Fay is gone. She sure helped the drought situation. Latest NWS doesn't look too bad to me. It's back to summer weather - hot and humid.

Thanks for the link, cb. But I saw it back on Sunday--was the first thing I looked for after having seen the boys loading the buses in the rain as I drove by on 8th Ave Saturday (I missed the breakfast, but still had to make my annual pilgrimage down to Snoozy's and our bookstore for some gear* before the season starts).

Still bothers me that they had to endure that crappy weather, when I am sure they would have been more interested in focusing solely on Tulsa.

GO BLAZERS, YOU BEAT THE TROPICAL STORM, NOW BEAT THE HURRICANE! 04-rock

*Got me a new UAB hat. Am convinced my old one was unlucky. Rubbed this one with a black cat bone and a mojo toof. The spirits are with us! 04-towel

It will probably be first of next week before it makes landfall, and it is looking like it will be to the west of us.

What a difference a year makes!

Last year Texas was wet for a long time and I kept reading here how dry it was in 'Bama. Now, this year, you're complaining about the rain while we need it. My water bill has been hovering around the $350/month mark for a few months now.

Maybe Gustav will change that a little bit for us here.

We're supposed to be getting a little of the remnants of Fay over the next couple days. We need it bad. It has not rained here at all in over 3 weeks and we are 3 inches down for the month.

Watering four days a week for seven hours each time (28 hours total, for those who are mathematically challenged.) That's just to keep the 3/4 of an acre from turning from green to brown. I really could stand to knock those times up by about 15% to keep it really green ... and me really poor.

That's one thing about Texas. There may be no state income tax, but property taxes, utilities, and water are higher than many states with income taxes. I guess the govenments find their way of getting the money out of you regardless of how they try to hide it.

Maybe
Milo's tea wouldn't be a bad idea. Selling that stuff would offset the cost of watering my lawn.

I'd be turning a large part of my yard into stone, yucca plants, and a goldfish pond if that were my water bill. Luckily, here in FL, I have a straight pipe well down to the water table (mere feet below the grass) with a pump. This goes directly to my sprinkler system. Only downside is the amount of mineral the water has must be neutralized or it stains everything it touches.
I let my lawn die. That way, I don't have to cut the damn thing.

First off, that law is stupid. Second, since we entered drought conditions last year, which we still have, we have to pay a premium price over a certain amount of water usage. No one here is watering lawns. Every yard on my street is brown.

So, I'm part of the status quo on my street, at least when it comes to lawns.
