2008 CUSA Football Prediction Contest

Well, it’s that time of year again - CUSA Football Season. And it’s time to find out who is the best CUSA prognosticator. Think you can pick winners better than anyone else? Welcome to the fourth season of the CUSA Football Prediction Contest and the eleventh season overall including the MAC Contest.

How to Play

We’ll play the game the same way we did last year. I’ll send you an e-mail each week with the list of CUSA games for that week. You’ll pick a winner for each of the games and then rank them in the order you are most confident in your choice. For example, there are 9 games for Week 1 of the 2008 CUSA Football Season. 9 would be the game you are most confident in your pick, 8 the game you are 2nd most confident in, etc. 1 is the game you are the least confident in. Just pick the 9 winners and then rank them from 9 to 1. It’s that easy. If there are 6 games for a particular week then you will rank the teams from 6 to 1 and so on.

Scoring

For every game you get right, you will receive the number of confidence points you assigned to that particular game. You will receive zero points for any games that you miss.

Also, the CUSA Championship Game will be worth 5 points, and the Bowl games will be worth double. For example, if CUSA has 6 bowl games, you'll rank the predicted winners from 6 to 1 and your total points will be doubled.

Whoever has the most points by the end of the season is the winner. In the event of a tie, the person who is closest to the combined score of the bowl game for the CUSA Champion will be the winner. We will be using the 96 regular season CUSA Games, the CUSA Championship Game, and any Bowl Games that CUSA is in.

Games

Here is the list of games for Week 1 of the 2008 CUSA Football Season:

Week 1

Thursday, August 28th

UTEP at Buffalo

Friday, August 29th

SMU at Rice

Saturday, August 30th

Virginia Tech vs. East Carolina (Charlotte)
Southern at Houston
Illinois State at Marshall
Memphis at Mississippi
Louisiana-Lafayette at Southern Miss
Tulsa at UAB
South Carolina State at UCF

To play, simply pick a winner for these 9 games, rank them from 9 to 1, and e-mail your picks to:

CUSAContest@hotmail.com.

The deadline for your picks is 7:00 P.M. Thursday, August 28th, just before the start of the UTEP at Buffalo game. I’ve created this special e-mail address to use exclusively for this contest. Everyone is invited to play. Feel free to post this on another bulletin board or e-mail it to a friend.

Normally, this is the place where I get things started by posting my picks. But, since I'm a little behind at getting this contest started, I just wanted to get the message out to everyone. I haven't started to work on my picks yet and will try to mail it to everyone by Wednesday, August 27th if not sooner.

For the rest of the season, I will e-mail my picks to everyone before the start of the games each week so everyone knows what my picks are. Sometimes I do this the day before the first game of the week, but I often don't get around to it until the morning of the games.

I will be the “commissioner” for this contest. I will try to e-mail the updated standings to everyone on a timely basis as well as the list of games for the upcoming week. This is an e-mail only contest. You can post your picks on the bulletin boards if you like but I don’t always check the bulletin boards. In order to count, you must e-mail your picks to me before the start of the first game of the week. This is usually about 12:00 or 1:00 on Saturdays, but some weeks have a game during the week, like this first week, for instance.

There is a large amount of data I have to enter into a spreadsheet to keep track of this contest. I have to enter 3 pieces of data (winner, confidence points, right or wrong) for all 96 games for each person that plays. 33 people played in 2004, so there were 10,296 pieces of data. (There’s actually a lot more data than this, but once I enter these 3 pieces of data, the spreadsheet is set up to calculate everything else for me.) So, imagine if we get more than that to play this year. I try to check everything but you can see how I could easily make a mistake. I will save all e-mails for the entire season. So keep track of your own points and if you ever think there is a mistake, just let me know and I will double-check it. Also, I sometimes don't receive an e-mail all together, so make a folder and save your own e-mails so you can forward it to me if an e-mail ever gets lost.

I have made a web site for this contest where I will (ocassionally) have the updated standings for everyone to view. Check it out!

2008 CUSA Football Prediction Contest

It will have the list of games for the entire season. This way you won’t have to wait for me to e-mail the games for the following week, you can simply check the website and mail your picks to me at your leisure. That way, too, you can get an idea of what games are to come. I will try to send an e-mail to everyone with the list of games for the following week about 6-7 days before the first game of the week. I usually don't get around to updating the standings until later on in the week, especially the first week. The website also has the standings from past years and some useful links to find out information for the games like the Vegas line, team records, etc.

Once you e-mail your picks to me, I will send you a response to let you know I received it. If you don't receive a response from me within 24 hours on your Week 1 ballot, please e-mail me again. If you played this game last year, I have already sent you this identical message. However, if your e-mail has changed or you no longer use your old one very often you will have to let me know.

I will post this message on some bulletin boards several times until the first games begin on Thursday, August 28th to give everyone a chance to see it and enter. Feel free to tell your friends about it or post a link or message on another bulletin board for me. The more the merrier. Since I haven't posted on the bulletin boards much for the better part of the past 8 years, I don't know the links of many bulletin boards anyway other than the Herd Grapevine. For 2005, we had 20 Marshall fans and 1 Southern Miss fan. I'd like to have a lot more non-Marshall fans in the contest this year. We lost all of our MAC fans a few years ago moving to CUSA. So, the help of everyone to spread the word would be appreciated.

Thanks and Good Luck!!!
