I have been impressed by the way Howard Schnellenberger has turned this program around and the way they had near wins against South Florida last year. I was actually thinking that they have a really good shot at beating Texas this saturday on the road. I was wondering who some of you thought might have a better chance of beating the longhorns:
Florida International at Texas or
UTEP in El Paso?
To me I think it's a toss up.
FAU is going to get stomped. They'll probably play close for a quarter, maybe even the first half, but they don't have much depth. They remind me of the UCF teams in the late 90s that would play everyone close but collapse in the 4th from lack of depth.

I think that FAU has a better chance to upset us than UTEP does. I'm probably biased because Rice was able to beat UTEP last year... That being said, I think UT will be able to pull out a victory in each game.

FAU will get stomped at UT, Isn't the UTEP game at UTEP, if so I think UTEP will be closer but still a loss.

FAU=UTEP IMHO, so the place the game is played will factor in who is closer game.

Rice is one of those teams that UTEP always chokes against... I have no doubt UTEP will give UT a challenge it might be the outcome I want, but the fans will be loud and ready to give UT hell! FAU needs to bang up the horns.

I completely agree with sideshow. You guys will have a closer game.

is the FAU game on tv? I need to check...
I predict FAU will upset Texas. Texas was not that strong against stAte or UCF last year; the Big 12 official made a bogus call that prevented stAte from taking the Horns into OT.

12. TEXAS

STARTER/BACKUP: Colt McCoy/John Chiles
THE BUZZ: McCoy struggled some as a sophomore, yet still threw for 3,303 yards and 22 TDs and rushed for 492 yards. But his 18 picks were a big-time cause for concern. McCoy should be expected to lessen the number of mistakes. Chiles is a big-time runner who will see time, but he has a ways to go to become a proficient passer.

21. FLORIDA ATLANTIC

STARTER/BACKUP: Rusty Smith/Jeff VanCamp
THE BUZZ: Smith burst on the scene in a big way as a sophomore last season, throwing for 3,688 yards and 32 TDs. He has NFL size (6-5/225), and FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger – who spent more than a decade of his career in the NFL – says Smith is a future first-rounder. "Some are getting drafted that aren't as good as he is right now. I don't understand why anybody questions me," he told the Sun-Sentinel of Fort Lauderdale.

33. UTEP

STARTER/BACKUP: Trevor Vittatoe/Kyle Wright
THE BUZZ: Vittatoe emerged as a potential star last season as a redshirt freshman, throwing for 3,101 yards, 25 TDs and seven picks. If a legit No. 2 receiver develops, Vittatoe should have no problem improving on his numbers. He already has a good feel for the offense and a 30-TD season is a legit goal.
On sheer emotion, UTEP stands a better chance of beating UT-Austin.

Your being bitter about a game from last year doesn't make FAU better than UT. It's still an almost impossible task for a Sun Belt team to knock off a top 10 team.

Don't buy the FAU hype. Rusty Smith is a great QB and is by far the second best QB in the state behind Tebow and is a better passer than Tebow.

That aside, FAU lost scholorships due to APR scores and will continue to do so. Everywhere Howard has gone, the NCAA has followed with investigations, FAU will be no different.

Actually that that game will be on ppv for 29.99

Had Coach Schnellenbecker kept his mouth shut maybe but now they have Texas' full attention.
I hope they do beat Texas. Big wobbly heads have a high center of gravity and we've got FAU the following week.
LOL. As for living in Texas and getting a real close look at Texas's team..they will destroy FAU.

Now, don't get me wrong. I want FAU to win. But this will be an atomic teabag.

UTEP and Texas is the game that is going to be close. Which I could very well see UTEP winning.

I'm not sure how some of you choose the later (FAU), after seeing who plays at home and who plays away.

Who said anything about Florida International. 05-stirthepot

Ahh ****.
UTEP is not going to beat Texas and neither is FAU. And neither, for that matter, is Rice on 9/20. I happen to think Rice has the best date on the schedule to play them though. The week before us they play Arkansas, and the week after us they open up Big 12 play with Colorado.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see it happen (any of the three of FAU, UTEP, or Rice to beat Texas), it's just not likely. And if UTEP wants to continue 'choking' against Rice that is fine as well.

Nah, I am way too old to be bitter over a football game; not important enough in life to me. It is just a game!!!

I pick FAU, based upon the Owl's bowl success in 2007, and the fact that it will be Texas' very first game.
Rice, fans seem to think UTEP has no shot... the difference between UTEP and Rice when playing UT is about 50k people... 03-razz give or take. It will get loud and the Miners will have a shot at UT. With that being said I hope FAU ruffs them up a little... we will save the scraps for Rice... to create a skit or something on UT's terrible start to the season...
Its a tall order to be sure.

We have a shot, but Texas depth will probably prevail.

There secondary and total Pass defense is VERY suspect at this time. They just lost there most experienced safety to season ending surgery, and are starting a Redshirt Freshman and True Freshman. As it turns out that is by far our greatest strength. Look for a high scoring shoot out as our defnse also is iffy at best.

Ill drink the Kool-aid and say well win, but I certainly wont loose any sleep if we loose.
I seriously can't believe any of you are picking FAU to beat Texas in Austin...

They also open a brand spanking new Endzone Facility and have quite a bit of talent returning from last year's team.

I can understand if you pick believing that Colt McCoy sucks. But even if he does suck it will take a Hurricane event to come in and blow the Horns on their ass.

I wouldn't even pick FAU to win by 3 TDs at home and you have THEM BEATING UT IN AUSTIN?!?!?!?

The sun bowl will be as hostile as it has ever been, but I really don't think it will hurt the longhorns since they are used to playing in hostile environments. As much as I say UTEP needs to start beating these big programs, I think it will be very difficult.

I'm not sure that all of us are. The OP did ask who we thought had a better chance at beating Texas. Texas should win, but they still have to show up.

FAU will cover and will make it a game going into the 4th quarter. Mark it down. Texas has a marginal pass defense and Rusty will be winging it all game to keep it tight.
FAU's defense is probably not good enough to beat Texas. As a CUSA homer I am going to say that UTEP can beat the Longhorns, but they are going to have to bring their A game on defense.

I see what you are saying, but I imagine that last year this time you said something like this:

Quote:
I seriously can't believe any of you are picking Appalachian State to beat Michigan in Ann Arbor...

They have the nation's largest football stadium and have quite a bit of talent returning from last year's team.

I can understand if you pick believing that Chad Henne sucks. But even if he does suck it will take a Hurricane event to come in and blow the Wolverines on their ass.

I wouldn't even pick App State to win by 3 TDs at home and you have THEM BEATING MICHIGAN IN THE BIG HOUSE?!?!?!?

That alone proves you never say never.

I don't expect FAU or UTEP to beat Texas. However IMO FAU stands a better chance because you know that Texas is going to go all out to avoid losing to a "little brother" school in state.

The problem is...I never said that.

And I hate Michigan. 03-drunk

I fully expect my team to win both games against FAU and UTEP and both games should be pretty much good ole county asskickings. Matter of factly, I expect a tougher game out of Rice this year then I do UTEP. FAU seems to have a very respectable squad and will be a good test. However,Schnellenberger in his attempt to get his squad ready for us, accidently put bulletin board material out. Everyone should expect my team to be ready this coming Saturday and the next week when we play in El Paso.

Finally. A Horn poster on this board. Welcome.

My brother is a UT grad. I've already forewarned him about UTEP.

I believe you should also be warned about that game as well 05-stirthepot As it will be your toughest test imo.

Hey RC Horn, who is that jumping over the North Carolina player at the Sun Bowl?

That would Priest Holmes, who later starred for the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL. A horrible knee injury in the preseason after the 1994 Sun Bowl cut down his playing time at UT.

I saw on the news a UT player and boy this guy was huge I think he was a DB... ouch!

Here are my thoughts from watching the UT/FAU game:

FAU O vs. UT D:

FAU's WRs and QB did a good job of exploiting the weak UT secondary. However, UT's front 7 dominated the line of scrimmage, got tons of pressure on the QB and killed the running game. FAU was kind of able to hang in there when they were calling smart passing routes, but whenever they made a play that came down to pure physical talent (running up the middle, fade routes, etc.) the horns dominated them. There is a lot of room to exploit this UT defense and I think that Rice (and maybe UTEP if they can get things together) will be able to put some points up on them.

UT O vs. FAU D

Colt McCoy is the real deal this year. He was making pinpoint throws and showed some great scrambling abilities. Since UTEP couldn't stop Clement last year, I fear for what Colt will do to their D. I also don't want to think about what kind of pain he's going to inflict against Rice's weak pass rush. However, I thought UT's running game was kind of mediocre for the physical advantages they should have. Their whole offense will have to rely on Colt this year, but that might not be a bad thing.

After watching this game, I'd be shocked if UTEP or Rice was able to play with UT. They look like they're going to have no problem beating the non-BCS schools this year.

After the game, I was listening to the Longhorns post game on KROD and Coach Mack Brown was talking up the electricity and atmosphere they will experience at the sun bowl. This guy is class. I still don't think it will phase them a bit since they are used to playing in loud and hostile environments. We'll just waita and see.

it should be a great atmosphere and should be fun... win or lose.
