On Thursday, Rice fans will have a chance to chat live about Rice football with MK, on the eve of the Owl's season opener against SMU. I will pass along the link and the specific time on Thursday as soon as I can. Alan Shelby
Great news, Alan. I hope to participate, if the time doesn't conflict with my kids' carpool and weekly 9 holes on the links. :-)
Maybe we could also use this thread for folks who can't participate live to post their questions ... and encourage those who do chat live can also ask those questions to MK?

I'll bite. I wonder if MK sees anything different in our pre-season approach that makes a first game disaster (a la Nicholls State) unlikely?
I probably won't be able to "attend" Thursday's chat, but I have two questions, if someone cares to ask:
In a conference that isn't known for defense is it likely we will simply aim to outscore everyone or will our defense be stout enough to keep us in ball games in which the offense struggles?
How do our special teams look? Will our kicking game be able to manage field position?
I'm sure I'll have lots of questions ... but here's one I haven't seen discussed that maybe MK has some insight/opinion on:
Q: A lot of the pre-game talk concerns how our defense will contain the June Jones offense, and how effective or predictable (w.r.t Hawaii film) the 'Stangs will be in their first game with the system and also with freshmen QBs. But what about the SMU defense? How different is SMU's defense expected to be under JJ? And what have Chase, JD and the Owls been practicing against? And what are DB's and Mensa's attitudes toward making in-game adjustments based on what SMU actually shows on the field?
I'd like to know if we have any big hitters that may not be known as such. I always like to see a little guy that packs a punch...
Today's the day that "Houston's leading information source" raises its game with MK's Live Rice Football Chat! Kick off is at noon on his blog. Hope you can make it. Alan Shelby
Thanks to everybody who partipicated in MK's Live Rice Football Chat today. In case you missed it, you can presently replay it on his Chronicle blog at

Seems like those chat sessions could replace the game threads we have in here... maybe he could also set them up for baseball? The only problem with those chats for games would be the fact that I wouldn't be able to pad my post count

.
I just see a static screenshot on MK's blog.

It cuts off in the middle of MK's 11:54 response to Chef Owl's question.
Oh, ok, never mind. It doesn't want to replay from that particular entry page, but goes just fine from the main MK page. (Me fail Internet? That's unpossible!)
Yeah, that chat feature does look pretty nice! Don't worry though, UT Ceng Owl -- gotta figure we'll have a game thread too (for carping about the wretchedness of E$PN, general tomfoolery, etc.) Or for directing people to the chat, for that matter. Perfect postpadding opportunity there!

In the chat, I believe that MK or an admin will select the outside questions to include for viewing. A game thread on this board will still be useful, I think ... Indeed, both will probably be worth following.

Man, I don't know if I'm talented enough to watch a game, drink a beer, and follow not one but two different game threads.

As a Rice grad, you should be able to do at least three things while drinking with ease...

Yeah, but I didn't mention the 5 kids that I have to attend to simultaneously. Too many questions, noses to wipe, diapers to change, mouths to feed, etc all while doing whatever else it is that I do for myself, like drinking the beer, watching the game, etc. Plus, add in the fact that I'm married to an Aggie, and I should be allowed some sort of handicap to my score. It's sort of like running uphill with one leg amputated.

You know, I didn't start mixing that drinking part in until I came to grad school. It kind of makes me feel like I failed at doing the whole undergrad thing.... do you think they'll take back my diploma?

I'm the EXACT same way. It put me quite a good ways behind at B-School.
