I must admit, that didn't seem right to me either. Here is the link I based that on.....

http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreview...items/3815

Isn't Tier 1 just about research dollars and endowment? I am asking, I do not know. But that is what I thought I read in the Houston Chronicle about Coog U.
That is a regional ranking for Marshall, not national.

oops...That is the only rating I could find for Marshall online.

USM is BACK to tier 3. They were already tier-3 before a mishap/foul-up by our last president.
Academic considerations such as courses offered, masters and doctorate programs offered, etc. are also included in determining tier placement.
Ya wanna know why this is bunk? Alabama-Tuscaloosa and Auburn are Tier 1. Whatever this is based on, it is not academics.

Ole Piss and Moo U. are both tier 3.

We were disappointed to see Tulane drop out of the top 50. The selectivity of admissions is way up this year, and we hope to jump up several spots accordingly next year. Other ranking factors were solid; the selectivity is where we slipped.

Thanks.

The annual yahoo of a report by US News is so flawed - it's simply hilarious. Don't put a lot of heart or thought into it.03-yawn

Each analysis from every news service (like US News, etc.) is so different & inconsistent from each other. However, Forbes may be one of the more consistent as for analyzing the schools.
If SMU is not #1, the ranking method is seriously flawed!!!

/sarcasm

I just want SMU to rank at the top of the important rankings like:
Best party school
Hottest coeds

You know, the ones that really do matter.
The one I love is that this ranking places 25% of its score based on what some peers think of the school. 25 frieken percent! Wow...

Well, it's easy for Forbes to be consistent considering they've only done their rankings for ONE YEAR. In addition, most people found the Forbes rankings to be one of the more laughable attempts at ranking schools. Their list was a total joke and should be disregarded.

US News has been doing this for years, and while no system does (or even COULD) satisfy everyone, US News is the most respected and trusted name in the game. Prospective students and their parents certainly give it the most weight when deciding, and its the only ranking that colleges worry about.

I personally have HUGE problems with their methodology, but its still the best we've seen, and the fact that colleges actively TRY to move up their rankings speaks volumes.

So how do we think the new medical will affect us in 09? I would think we would still be tier 3. Why is there no tier 2?

That peer perception should be eliminated. There are a lot of bs factors involved in this ranking.
Only five schools that are non-BCS and play Div-1 Football are in the Top 100.

#17 Rice
#51 Tulane
# 66 Miami (OH) and SMU
# 83 Tulsa

There used to be a Tier 2. There was top 50 (Tier 1), and then 51-100, which was basically Tier 2. They've since changed it to one giant Tier 1 that often goes way beyond 100 schools.

In theory, the medical school shouldn't affect UCF's ranking at all since these are only UNDERGRAD rankings (there are separate grad school rankings which were announced months ago). However, if it improves the perception other schools have of UCF, or leads to increased donations, it could have a very positive effect.

Donations lead to a larger endowment, which helps (especially since UCF has a VERY small endowment... no penis jokes please). Also, a portion of the ranking is percentage of alumni that give. That's why you should always donate at least $20 every year. If everyone did that, the ranking would shoot up.

-Chris

The biggest thing that could help would be the medical school shooting our research funding up significantly. The biggest thing holding us back is the student:teacher ratio, which is not getting fixed so long as the Fla Legislature continues to be composed of dumbshits.
Tier 4 baby! AS long as the Tigers basketball team doesn't go to Tier 4, we are cool

Garbage in, garbage out. Nobody has moved up to anything. This is a magazine artice and has nothing to do with the standing of any university.

US News at least uses legitimate sources. Forbes used the fraction of graduates listed in Who's Who (which I believe indicates the fraction of your graduates that are willing to be scammed) and professor rankings on ratemyprofessors.com (which is incredibly sparse for schools like Rice and UT, go check it out for yourself). I'm trying to think of criteria that would be more of a joke, but it's a difficult task.

Kind of bitter aren't you. It is what it is. I am proud USM has moved up to tier 3. This rating by US News is heavily looked at by prospective students and parents. So therefore the standing of a University does move up in their eyes with this rating.

I think many are here are confusing the US snews Tier 1 (or top 50) with the old Carnegie 1 ranking, that classified schools based on research levels. The tier 1 were top research universities. The US snews ranking is not to be confused with that.

I know that the UNDERGRAD curriculum at UAB for the sciences are head-and-shoulders ahead of UAT or AU. I know our Engineering department has more Alabama Engineers of the Year than UAT and AU combined. I know that UAB has the only Honors Program in the state that is allowed to create a custom core curriculum unique in the state, and they own the national honors conferences. I know that our Mock Trial team is top 10 in the country (who has the law school?). I know that our undergraduates do a heck of a lot of research usually reserved for grad students. I know that our GPA and ACT scores are equal to theirs.

What we don't have is the endowment, and a football team in the SEC. I'm sure this is based on a lot of things, and there are things that come with age that Auburn or Alabama-Tuscaloosa has which is better. Tier 1? For party schools...

what he said, plus
UAB is the 4th largest research institution in the southeast, only behind Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill and Vandy.
UAB received over $416million in outside grants and contracts (2007-2008)
UAB Hospital is one of the top hospitals in the U.S.

It has nothing to do with where they put us. I suppose if Cosmo came out with a list you would post that? The US nes stuff simply has no credibility. I can assure you no Dean in an Amewrican school goes around worrying about where he is ranked by a magazine article.

On the contrary, every dean worries because US News is used by potential students to choose colleges. The deans may know how worthless the US News rankings are, and know that they mean little about the quality of the school, but they sure as hell do worry about it. And they hear from alumni when the school drops too!

we'll have to disagree about that Knight. I do not think students pay much attention to it at all. It has appeal to some because many americans love to look at a 'list' of anything. That is the reason Saragin rankings are posted here although their rankings are totally subjective and have no real value in terms of reality.

You couldn't be more wrong concerning the US News rankings. It is very relevant to prospective students and their parents, thus it is very relevant to the Universities the prospective students are looking at.
You are simply throwing a fit with the Cosmo comment. If UH had made the move like USM to tier 3 from tier 4 you would be posting how positive that would be for UH.

Students do pay attention and though I know what a great school UH is, it disturbs me to see us as a Tier 4 university when I know we have the potential for greatness.

+1 for ECU, but it is what it is. Good post.

The UAB hospitals have nothing to do with this set of rankings. These are for undergraduate rankings and a whole lot of factors go into it. Being a young, public, urban university brings with it a set of challenges that is hard to overcome in rankings. The academic quality isn't the only factor taken into consideration.

I'm guessing it's been quite awhile since you had to pick a college. :)

Where UH is significantly impacted in the rankings is with things that come from a large commuter student base, for example "retention & number of years to graduate." When you have working students either never finishing or taking 6-7 years to graduate, that's a rankings "knock." One other factor, from what I understand, are % of students living on campus. Both of these should be fixed with UH's aggressive dorms construction projects (i.e. part of the Master Plan) currently underway...

Depends on the college you choose. Those rankings could make this sh*t look like swiss cheese.

UH's Law School is Tier 1.
